A rare promotional video for the classic single by Stevie Wright (ex-Easybeats), as shown on GTK, ABC-TV Australia, October 28 1974. The clip was revived for Rage, Feb 20 2022, taken from a mute video transfer with restored audio (not by me!).

I have to say, Stevie Wright was a genius. Even Mick Jagger was in awe of Stevie with his theatrics. My personal experience with Stevie was (warts and all) was when I married my Philippino wife, Evy, 35 years ago and when I first met her at Sydney Airport in a rented Holden Commodore to impress ( worth heaps now), and I arranged the local Radio station previously to pre record on a cassette (in those days) a very big welcome to my now wife Evy to Australia followed by the song. Voice over radio presenter only charged me a bottle of whiskey for the tape and I only had to pick the right time to put the cassette into the car playback. Beautiful romance and timing. Fast forward a few months and guess what? Stevie Wright and his band were playing at a club here in Canberra. I proudly took my wife to his concert and funnily enough, around 1pm the band finished their final set, bar closed and here we were.....myself, wife Evy, Stevie and the band alone around a table drinking together, only people left standing with the bar open only for us! Doesn't get better than that. Mind you, my wife doesn't drink alcoholic drinks. So Stevie asks me if I knew where he could score some drugs. My first thought was that I could assist normally, but it was 2am in the morning, and no mobile phones back then, and I couldn't help at that time of the morning. Nevertheless, what a most memorable and exciting time. Stevie, you are sorely missed for the genius you are and most definitely the memories!! RIP brother and hope you are still writing songs....love to hear them when my time comes.

It was not the heroin that Ruined his life. That was only a part of it. He went to get help for his drug addiction. He checked himself into the Chelmsford private hospital . There he was given 14 electric shock treatment's that fried his brain and caused him to suffer from brain damage. Then he was given a cocktail of drugs to put him in a coma for two weeks while he was in that state he was unable to get any oxygen to his brain which caused him to suffer from brain damage. Some time during the rehab stay he woke up and tried to get away from them by jumping out of a window. He broke his foot and couldn't get away. He was found by a staff member of the rehabilitation center and she took him back. There they had to have three men hold him down so that they could Chain him down so that they could restart their treatment that they were given him. He said that they had broken his will by then. He also went to the Westmont rehabilitation center for help with his drug addiction but that didn't work either. Only 3 week's after they Released him from the treatment center he was arested for trying to break into a house and for having drugs on him. Now in my opinion if he had been free of drugs that they had said that he was he would never have done anything like that.. He could have went on to live a normal life and have been able to find happiness in his life. And Been able to continue his music career. Not do the things that they claim that he had done. He was a victim of the the Rehabilitation centers that he had went to for help believing that they were not a Bunch of unqualified quack's that did experience's on him and others. The Chelmsford private hospital caused 25 suicide's after they got released from under their care.. And cause another 25 deaths during their treatment by the Doctors and nurses.that worked there. Some people say that Stevie wright was lucky to have served . But I Wonder if that is true. He had so much pain and suffering from it... Now when people that don't know anything about him they say that Stevie wright is a Drug addict who Ruined his life. He lost out on almost every thing in his life. Most of all his Son Nick

Very nice 😢😢😢 He was a great performer You really should show some respect for his artistic song writing abilities to entertain the audiences 🎉🎉🎉 Remember that if Stevie wright was there in the Easybeats, there would not have been no ac dc. Because there would be no Vanda and Young 🎉 . Just because he made a mistake when he tried Heroin 😢 doesn't mean that he has to pay for it the rest of his life. He was not the only performer in the early 70s that did drugs. Every body from Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin , Jimmy Hendrix, Brain Jones just to name a few. Was a Drug addict. Even John Lennon was doing some sort of Drugs 😢😢 . But I guess That you have to Die to be forgiven for it. In the 1960 - and the 70s nobody knew about the Dangers of using drugs. It wasn't like today where everyone knows what happens, But still uses them 😢😢😢.

I have to agree with you that he was a Victim of the Doctors who treated him for his drug addiction'. I'm not saying that he didn't make a mistake when he tried Heroin, but in his defence he was not the only one that did it also. There was many people who were on them.. But when he realized that he had a problem and tried to get help by checking himself into the Chelmsford private hospital. Doctor's Frankenstein and Igor who treated him only made him worse.. He was given a cocktail of drugs That nobody knows what was in them. That put him in a deep sleep induced coma for at least 3 weeks. The Moron doctors didn't give him any oxygen to keep his brain from dying. Then the Fools gave him 14 Electric shock treatment's. He was a diabetic and didn't know it. Some of the cocktail of drugs were reworked insulin and barbiturates to Treat a Drug addict. F king So called doctors should have been given the the same treatment that they were given Stevie wright and at least 75 others. Who Died from there action So when we pass judgement on some body else. Be sure to check out their lives, and then Walk A Mile in their Shoes. People who live in Glass House's Should not throw Stones. Judge Not , Least You Be Judged. Who has not Signed Throw the First Stone. People Needs to go through what the people that they are Judging have been through. Let's see what happens to them?. .

He suffered from brain Damage after his treatment at the Chelmsford private hospital. He was given the treatment with out his permission. To get away from them he had to jump out of a window where he broke his foot and and got staff infection. They were able to find him and take him back and Chained him to his bed so they could restart his treatment. He would have been better off trying to get off the drugs himself. We have to Remember that he was somebody Son And Father. Who needed someone to help him. Not Make him a Joke to Laughed at. He needed Prayer, not Judgement

I have only literally learned of the Easy Beats legacy, it's connection to Australian music and Stevie Wright's sad life, before writing this. As an ex addict, this 3 part song, might be about an addict's misery? I never had a clue about this song EVER. But, I can see SO MANY echoes of the Abbey Road medley and Queen classics. From a relationship perspective, it's about the start with the first date, the falling in love and then of the romance dream? But, those two views are my own opinion. And the great thing about music it is different for each listener? Drugs are never the answer. They simply hide your pain for a short while. Sobriety? IS HEAVEN on Earth. Well, either way, Stevie, clearly didn't realise, how much HE WAS important. Because, it's clear, he had image or self esteem issues? But, Australia will NEVER forget him. And I can understand that even if I am a Pom LOL David RIP Stevie Wright.

I think that he could have been able to beat his drug addiction' if it wasn't for Stevie wright checking himself into the Chelmsford private hospital 😢😢 . Where instead of helping him with his problems, they made him even worse. They were given him a cocktail of drugs that nobody knows what was in them. Insulin was one and barbiturates was another. After that no one has any ideas of what else was in there.. That put him in a deep sleep induced coma for at least 3 weeks. His brain was not able to get the oxygen it needed to servie. It caused him to suffer from brain Damage for the rest of his life. Also he was given 14 Electric shock treatment's at the same time. I think that it caused him to not be able to make good decisions and his life suffered because of it. Nobody was there for him to help him with it. And I think that he could have been saved if He was given a clean place to stay And healthy foods and beverages that would have been able to clean the toxins from his body. They could have used exercise to help him sweat out the toxins also..

Thank you so much@@OldiesMomma. I DID wonder why, in the very short bits where he WAS interviewed, he was talking differently and seemed a shell of his former selves? Sadly, the 70s and 80s attitudes to treatment for addiction were different. And based on what you told me? VERY unprofessional. You MUST tailor the treatment to each person. Because of course, each person is different. I AM AN EX ADDICT. And, I am SO GLAD, I'm sober and clean. One part of getting and STAYING clean is healthy eating and THINKING. Drug addiction is more than being addicted to a drug. And drugs aren't the root cause. Mental and emotional issues ARE. Once you tackle them, you are empowering the addict to take back control and taking away the power from addiction. Sitting at my desk smoking crack 24/7 and looking through the rubbish bin when I didn't have any left? Panicking when I didn't have smack. Life is never easy or perfect, but it IS 1000% better than being an addict. I WILL NEVER GO BACK to that living hell. And the sad truth? It's a hell we, the addict, create and give power to. As with most things, it's all connected to your mental and emotional outlook. Stevie Wright should've had proper therapy and treatment to slowly take him off all his addictions. And then, maybe working out? AN entire process of cleansing and empowering him. Very sad but tragically, one of SO MANY addicts who weren't helped properly. David

Thank you I agree with you that he had some mental health problems. He was only 16 when he became famous and 21 when it was over. He didn't have anyone to look after him. He was to young when he went through every thing he did. He just couldn't handle it. I believe that if Stevie had a person with the knowledge about about nature foods that cleanse your body. He might have been able to beat his drug addiction'. After the drugs, he went to southern comfort whiskey to help him self. It's a shame that he didn't have anyone to take proper care of him. Until it was to late. He had health problems by this time. So sad 😢😢😢
@davidaston5773

I agree@@OldiesMomma. It depends on the person but it is always about mental maturity. It was a lot to handle for anyone of any age. Would we or others do any better? But, one thing is for certain: you need to have something which grounds you and enables you to fall back on it. And Stevie found that in drugs. David

He had a lot of great music 🎵🎶 with the Easybeats and his solo music career. The music industry just ignored him. They should have been Fired for that. It was Stevie Wright's lyrics that George Young wrote the music to. Stevie wright was the first song writing partner of George Young. With out Stevie there wouldn't be any AC DC, or flash in the pan. It was not Vanda and Young that the girls were mailing them selves to. It was Stevie wright. If it wasn't for Stevie being their front man and doing his back flips and his arobic jump's and leaps. They would not be famous. They would have been just 3 guitar player's and a drummer just like everyone else.
