Necrons are the great and the terrible, they are the grandiose and amazing magic science making sweeping moves but their also scared old people locked in cages of metal waiting for the day they don't wake up or start to slip

In the old days I remember thinking the Necrons were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They're a race of T-800s which is badass but they really didnt have that much going for them in terms of customization, or to put it more bluntly personality. I dont like retcons in general unless it's to delete bad writing (retcon Endtimes I beg you GW), and to be frank there was no graceful way to fix the Necrons' personality problem. We saw in the first Dawn of War how playing the Necrons you didnt get the same great banter you'd get as you would playing as the immensely charismatic Eliphas. Making the Necrons fully realize their Tomb Kings in space role was the only real choice. That doesnt fix the other problem, however. The Necrons were always jobbers and will continue to be jobbers. I remember once upon a time the Silent King waking up was supposed to be a galaxy-ending deal, and now that he's awake he's just kinda hanging out I guess? We were lead to believe tomb worlds across the milky way would awaken, long dormant ships would erupt from the ground and take to the stars as armies of soulless machines scoured worlds of all life. All to restore the ancient empire they once were. I guess that's the biggest problem I have with 40k. We've got, what, two more purported Endtimeses lined up? We already had Failbaddon the Neverchosen breaking the Cadian Gates, and the Silent King awakening and the Galaxy, while in rough shape, is still kicking. Now we just gotta wait for the Emperor to die because nobody knows how to maintenance his Throne anymore, and the heart of the Tyranids or whatever is inferred to be pursuing them to reach the galactic disk. The Necrons are now just a bunch of eccentric retirees with what seems to be no real ambition because so far all they've seemed to have done is sit around and bicker amongst themselves I guess, which is classic GW when they write themselves into a corner. Next we'll have a hive fleet mutate into fire tyranids or termiterids and they'll fight the normal tyranids and save the galaxy from being eaten. The Tomb Kings were supposed to be stagnant, the Necrons were implied to be huge movers and shakers if they ever actually got enough momentum going, but now that they're up all they wanna do is sit down.
