Good heart? I'm barely in and this guy sucks. He could just stick to real reasons his sister is awful but he starts off with her 'body count' and telling us how moral he is by not having a high number and 'courting' women. And obvious commentary like saying how he wants to spend time with them based on compatibility, like it takes some paragon of manliness to come up with such an idea. Maybe if he was such a great guy he wouldn't need to use terms that insinuate that he has gone through dating- oh I mean courting- a lot of unsatisfactory women.

And then he follows the evil stepmother to give her a forgotten water bottle (???) and accidentally finds out that she's cheating. Then she tells him the whole detailed backstory of her affair right on the spot, and whoops! Look who happens to be listening too! Even if the author was openly admitting this was pure fiction and the reader was willing to suspend disbelief based on that understanding, it would still need some work to make it plausible. "I was concerned that the woman who was the bane of my existence might get a little thirsty at her yoga class." When you're trying to pass off fiction as a true story, you need to keep the coincidences to a _bare_ minimum, make sure to acknowledge them, and leave out the absurdities altogether.

I feel bad for Ash. Sounds like Mommy made a mini me out of her and sabotaged any attempt to choose a different path. Some women do that. They view their daughters as do-overs and force them to live the same life, but better. Now the only semi healthy parent Ash ever known has disowned her for her mother's sins while she's pregnant. Her not wanting to lie and marry a guy for money is a glimmer of hope. If someone gets that girl far FAR away from her mother, she might make it and do ok with her kid. It will not happen if Marissa stays involved though. They are a year or two out from Ash being pimped by her mother if things continue.

I think it might be that his mom unintentionally messed him up. While done with good intentions, she kept repeating "your father's a good man" no matter how neglectful the dad was, then showered her son with love. Psychologically, this makes a conflicting core belief in the child, where his dad is an AH and a good man at the same time. And as the mother passed away beloved by the child, it would reinforce that core belief as challenging it would mean challenging all the fond memories OP has of his mom. It would account for all the extra details as every interaction with his dad is causing his mind to juggle two different narratives. And as the dad was tied to the hip to step-moo and step-skank, the same ideology would apply to them too.

You don't owe these people anything, young man. You have a good job, a house of your own, and a stable income. Why should you have to sacrifice YOUR stability to help take care of your sister, who is spoiled and lazy and unemployed and pregnant, just because Mommy Dearest wills it so. If she wants her daughter to have a safe place to live during her pregnancy, let the daughter move back in with her and Daddy. Why should you help when they have done NOTHING to help you? And they are being totally unreasonable by expecting you to just GIVE your sister YOUR house AND take care of her and the baby and the house, and you just move out and make way for her. Absolutely not. You ARE NOT the a-hole in this situation. You were willing to give her a room, rent free until she gets on her feet and that wasn't good enough for them. They are just jealous of your success and want their little princess to have for free what you have worked so hard to earn. I wouldn't do it.

She makes me think of that one dumb sweetheart that always talks a big game in a group full of meangirls. Site the Tweevils, Ashleys, Meangirls, the Tropes from Becky Prim, and the Heathers. Her childhood doesn’t excuse her behavior, but it certainly explains it, and I hope she doesn't suffer too harshly, since it'll only reinforce her victim mentality.
