Surrounded by arguably some of the best and most famous science communicators alive (Bill Nye, Richard Dawkins, Brian Greene, Ira Flatow, Neal Stephenson,Tracy Day and Lawrence Krauss), astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson delivers an amusing (and funny) speech on science and art.

I don't know jack **** about science. I wasn't interested in school at all, in fact, as soon as I was old enough, I left. That was 15-16 years ago. I'm doing OK for myself regardless but I have to state the obvious here: Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a brilliant man who has almost single-handedly inspired me to pick up text books again and start to learn about things I couldn't have cared less about previously. He has a way of making subjects that would normally baffle/bore me to death intriguing and easy to understand despite my self-inflicted ignorance and while I'll probably never excel ( let alone work ) in these fields, I don't see the harm in educating myself as much as I can now that I'm in my early 30's. Thank you Neil.

Do we all eventually reach the point where we cannot do, therefore we teach? His charisma may be wasted on data... but so few of us really _understand_ the data!
@sacr3
@sacr3 9 жыл бұрын
Yea, downfall is simply because you love the guy doesn't mean he is right. He studies in a very specific field yet he spews his opinions about other fields (biology for example) like they're fact. He writes books, he has never made a scientific discovery - the real scientists are the ones that don't get the cameras pointed at them. He inspires kids and young adults to hit the scientific field - which is great, and he is a good speaker.
@dinofreak222

+tarheeltx1 Why, thank you for your comment my kind, human, co-traveller! I quite like this man, a lot. He transcends all notions of stereotype and racism. When I see him I do not think in terms of "I am white and he is black" - those notions are so far away as to be non-existant. I just see one hell of a smart man. I see one hell of a wise man. I see an incredibly enthusiastic man who seems to be genuinely humbled by his recent "fame." I've yet to see even a glimpse of "I'm so much better than everyone else" from him. While that thought may indeed be true, he doesn't feel the need to flaunt such mental superiority. The people I most admire are the ones with incredible wealth or intelligence but are so confident of such, that they have no need whatsoever to overshadow others with their gift or even put it on display in the first place. The millionaire walking around in flip flops and casual, tattered clothes... Or a person like Neil, who if you asked a question to which he did not have an answer, wouldn't bullshit you with some made-up answer. He would say, "I don't know but I'll find out, tell you, and then we'll BOTH be smarter."

It seemed to me that out of the entire panel onstage only Krauss was quick witted enough to pull Degrasse back on point. He got a laugh because he was clearly enjoying the whole VanGough "night sky" through Degrasse's eyes interpretation (priceless). He also gave Degrasse a two thumbs up intro by stating that Degrasse never ceases to surprise him personally. If Krause is a showman then l would've thought so myself by the style of footware he had on.

neil highlighting a very important point here. We strived centuries to understand science and reach modern technology and our current analysis of the universe. But you know what we knew it all along we knew to eat, to drink to sleep, we knew death we knew life we have mathematics and physics hardwired in our brain, its jus that the working the complexity is hidden(what we have been trying to understand) we jus see the result. So as he said unless you connect with the universe and feel it you wont embrace it coz it was made for you.

I believe that Neil is one of the best science orators ever. He uses his intelligence in a humorous way to educate so that people can understand and remember. Mr Tyson is one of the few people I truely like to listen to besides Robin Williams. Most scientists are boring when they speak.
