Join the Origins Project at ASU for the final night in the Origins Stories weekend, focused on the science of storytelling and the storytelling of science. The Storytelling of Science will feature a panel of esteemed scientists, public intellectuals, and award-winning writers including well-known science educator Bill Nye, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, theoretical physicist Brian Greene, Science Friday's Ira Flatow, popular science fiction writer Neal Stephenson, executive director of the World Science Festival Tracy Day, and Origins Project director Lawrence Krauss as they discuss the stories behind cutting edge science from the origin of the universe to a discussion of exciting technologies that will change our future. They will demonstrate how to convey the excitement of science and the importance helping promote a public understanding of science. The panel discussion is sure to be a provocative and entertaining finale to our Origins Stories events. We look forward to seeing you there!

Idk,not judging anyone, but i don't like people(Neil degrasse) screaming or being aggressive to prove or implement their point. And another thing, he doesn't even listen and think about what other people are saying he just have a preconceived answer to everything, which he just don't want to question.

Pratham Bansal he was right though. NASA started and was funded solely because the U.S. wanted to step up to the Soviet Union and prove that capitalism is better than communism. He was angry that they were naive about that FACT. If you watch carefully, you’d see Lawrence agreeing with him too.

That's right and it goes for him as well. That he is called Captain Logic by his sycophants is funny. Here's why: he said his Oxbridge college has more Nobel Peace Prizes than 'muslims'; but he failed to realize 'muslims' have infinitely more Nobel Peace Prizes than Richard Dawkins. Enjoy that one sycophant. Oh and there's just as many psychotic Muslims as psychotic Westerners, Richard Dawkins does have a mental health issue from his 'public' school upbringing, chances of him dealing with that are minuscule.

John McKay So you don't even have basic mathematics, science and logic: well for free zero equals nothing and 1 equals absolute certainty. Absolutely anything is an infinite compared to zero. It's why the Big Bang happened, maybe you can try and rap your mind around from one particle came the entire universe. Zero is awful, having no Nobel prizes and having the nerve to lambast others, oh and to bring his college into disrepute as well. Dawkins reminds me of a gobby kid who'll go and get his brothers if his bullying doesn't work and someone splats him. Of course all around the world there there are those who are as cowardly as he is, and in fact much worse. I graduated from a top 10 UK university, the last thing I'd do is leech off others achievements, though I know people like yourself that's how you operate.

+quest 757 I'd say that's certainly incorrect. In order to learn you do have to think because that is the process for progress. Certainly if you just didn't think when learning and just processed all the information as fact, that is why everyone thought the earth was the center of the universe for so long. In order to learn things have to be processed and so rationally thought about in order for progress to occur.

This was eight years ago, and since then, Neil was right. String Theory is obsolete. Many grants and funding-many many grants and funding-have done nothing but been a waste of money. Greene is still spewing string in argument for this theory when it is proven it can not answer anything. In this timeframe we have a new theory, as of 2014: Emergence Theory-E8-of Quantum Gravity. Garrett Lisi found the answers with mathematical theorem, and with that knowledge has started a group known as Quantum Gravity Research.

Wars are created to be right over other people and assume they are inferior to them. Religion helped to think they were chosen, better people. Look at the Vatican and their Holy Crusades, previously that Religion was into that too, after that too, and in between many religions did that. Anything that divides people in different ranks create wars. Like civil wars.

+xGOOFYJELLYFISH That's complete BS. It's not because they are rational that they get along but because they are part of the same group. Put christians together or muslims together or jewish together and they'll get along just the same. The same in politics or for any field for that matter. And don't forget that they are there to promote science (and not to ruin the show of their friend who happens to be the producer of the show). Have you ever seen a debate between a rationalist and a religious? Most of the time, it's the rationalist that tends to go nuts. You can express your dislike of religious people but you can't just invent some BS theory from thin air to do so. Your comment is uncalled for and is based on nothing but personal bias.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is just another scientist who is very passionate about what he says, and the fact of the matter, is that war does indeed fuel scientific progress and not the need for adventure in the government. Brian Green and Laurence Krauss were both wrong and were about to go on a huge rant about it. If you can't handle the fact that Neil gets passionate over misleading thoughts about what fuels science then you just need to get the fuck over it or get the fuck out.

Richard Dawkins is sort of... abrasive. He's honest and he speaks his mind. When he sees superstition he doesn't spare feelings while on his way to pointing it out. It has attracted to him the ire of lots of folks (religious folks mostly) in the past. And for some reason the radical "feminists" seem to hate him, never figured out why but it's most likely on some bullshit reason like most of the things they get their panties up in a bunch about nowadays.

Dawkins doesn't mince words, and tends to speak in a more calm and relatively neutral tone, as compared to NDT's or Nye's extreme enthusiasm. My guess is that those people on Tumblr didn't understand Dawkins or skipped past his chances to speak because they thought he was "boring;" in reality, while he's not the most enthusiastic or prominent member on that board, he has some of the best things to say.

9:00 I think Greene is right here. Tyson opts for the pop sci 'language of the universe' stuff to wow the audiences but in reality, as Greene says, maths is just used in our current logical *description* of the Universe. And an amazing one at that

As much as I love Neil, that's my only critique of him.

I agree with Neil! He’s right though, it is working now! If and when it limits us we’ll try other things but the current math has helped us explain many things that actually work and can be predicted!

Neil is such a top-caliber scientist not because of his science, but because he doesn't shy away from the truth of things. He tells it like it is and he doesn't deny reality. Not that the rest of them do, but he's willing to admit even when science isn't about science (NASA and the Cold War, for example).

+It's Me I was about to comment the same thing. He gets so excited and I love it...when you walk into the room with Neil Degrasse Tyson, you have entered the no bullshit zone!

Neil Degrasse Tyson is without a doubt a unique individual. But one thing that I think he might share with his other astrophysicist colleagues, one of the advantages of being (a scientist) in that field, is being exposed to the perspective of big things. Big things like planets, solar systems, galaxies, and black holes, and all those other wonderfully enormous activities that are happening everyday, but out of the consciousness of the average individual. I think when you observe these objects for a living, you adopt a paradigm of understanding long stretches of time in a new way, you develop a new way to use scientific theory that dictates using BIG generalizations to arrive at conclusions(assisted with mathematics of course). Its all so BIG that its necessary to think BIG to even be able to comprehend what small bit you can, dare i say you need to, to even be able to do anything in the profession. Combine this perspective with ( another very contrasting perspective) of the small. For instance a relatively inconsequential individual political event(a squabble between two people), or a relatively small period of time(say 1,000 years) that seems to be a defining importance in history, or even individual person. Bring these two perspectives together, and you've hit philosophers sweet spot. The elusive pot of gold that every philosopher looks for to make the most intellectually stimulated reasoning ,the contradiction. The contradiction is nothing more than two logical extremes that in effect mark the two polar 'flagpoles' of capable thought. Once the playing field is defined, its a cake walk just to start applying human reason to arrive at a hypothesis. That is to say, JUST THINK with as much honesty as you can muster. Now with your newly developed hypothesis and power of reason in your back pocket, just start SCIENCING till you cant science anymore. When your happy enough or just tired of sciencing, and decided you've reached the happy medium you can be satisfied with !VOILA! You're somewhere earth-shattering. Just look around tell us what you see. Obviously, because of his career,we know he sees the big. Just by listening to his stories and intricate knowledge of human historical events, and even current events we know that he sees the small as well. I think this potent combination of contrasting perspectives is what gives Degrasse his confidence. Its part of why, it always seems like he's saying "No, please, I've got something important to say." He's just telling us what he sees.

He is top-caliber "get-the-camera's-on-me" material and he stole time from others to respond. I get that he's all excited and tries to spread the excitement to others, but I find it a little disrespectful when he starts answering questions that weren't directed at him. And if you ask me, he smokes too much weed. How many times did he wander off and lost the point he was getting to? He should calm down a little, take a pill ... let some others do some talking as well.

Yet he says government should be leading the frontier to Mars, instead of you know, people that are ACTUALLY DOING IT, like Space X. If we follow his prerogative then we would never go to Mars with government backing because there is absolutely 0 reasons from the geopolitical. Its literally another world.
