I do hope he continues though. There is so many great learning videos on KZfaq. Most people come to watch fun mind numbing crap. I also watch just fun clips to escape. But love to learn. I guess because i am older and only dreamt of having to click on something and i could learn it. I would have to go to the library and hope they had a book on a subject and hope no one had borrowed it out. But visual learning is so much more effective. My son watches some kids playing minecraft or someother game and they get like 60 million views every vid they release. Its sad that most people, the more they dumb down their videos the more views.

Cool 👍 I call it ‘fake etymology method’. English words are perfect for this trick - they are generally very short which makes them perfect building blocks for these imaginary etymologies. I am a native Russian speaker learning English and oftentimes I find it easier to memorize new English words through English words I already know.

That's actually what I do to remember foreign vocabulary but combining it with Memory Palace technique... having a location for each letter allows me to remember where did I store the images... although I'm bad at keeping stations within locations xD

But the real challenge is fast recall. Perhaps we can memorize thousands of vocabularies but that doesn't necessarily well functioning when needed.

i’m learning korean and i got the hangul down, i’m good at syllables and letters and i read it, but i barely know any words. i have no idea on where to start learning what the words actually mean.

Hey Nelson! I recently found your channel after starting to memorise playing cards... Since than I watched super many of your videos! Great work, great editing, great guy! Thank you! I have used the linking method in the past but I did not know the name of the method... Like I put an German bug (the "Assel") on a Glass of Honey - Arabic word 'assel' means = honey / sweet / cute :-) But now I will restart doing it and there are so many languages left where knowing a few words can really help you! :-) I actually was wondering how that method might be called yesterday night an now I get your video in my feed... Great to hear and see some of your images - and the German pronunciation sounds pretty good (especially with the Rammstein clip). One thing about using a Memory Palace to note as that they help you scale not just the amount of words you can encode, but also complete a 2nd round to attach phrases (or tones, characters, etc). Plus, the Memory Palace lets you do SRS-style recall in your mind to max the benefits of primacy, recency, serial-positioning and have a home for the images that can help you overcome the forgetting curve fast. Thanks and can't wait for the RMT! :)

I call this method the "chain" or "chain join" method, but I think it's a bad idea to memorize words in several languages at once, it's better to learn one language a month and the words must be entrenche in long term memory, and then move on to another language.. As always, you have a great submission of techniques, great vid, thank you Nelson.

For Schmetterling I would have imagined a "sweater link" like an old fashioned Bavarian fastener for buttoning up a sweater, a sweater link, a Schmetterling.

I actually do this but also place each of these images in a place somewhere i usually walk by. That way whenever i go out, i see the place and remember the word, you know, for continuous recalling

Hi, your video was really awesome. I’m learning Japanese, do you have maybe also some tips for it? So that I remember the pronunciation with the Kanji. The Kanji have also meaning which I remember but still it makes it difficult to link the meaning of the Kanji with a pronunciation wich is quite different from the Western countries. Some random words: Kisha 記者 reporter Dantai 団体 group, team, organization

In Russian correct pronunciation would be like "bAA(h)bochka" (major stress on "a"), jfyi ;)

Have you heard people talk about - Yiyevi Ponevi Approach - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my brother in law got cool success with it.

This definitely won't get you to fluency but being able to have a technique to quickly learn a large amount of vcabe is invaluable to get to the point of being able to immerse and have some comprehensible I put even if you're understanding is only surface level. Would love to see you do a Japanese version of this

Any advice on memorizing verbs that may not have an obvious image that also does not have phonemes similar to that of English? For example "to implement" (hard to picture or create an image) is SIL-sih (실시) which doesnt have an easy English-like phonemes

Korean sounds are very similar to English ones. "Silsi" is "seal sea" or "silly" or "sill seam" or "sear she" etc. Meaning is harder. Google Translate says 실시 is a noun meaning "practice". What is another word for "to implement"?

I wouldn't like some advice. I am fluent in three languages English and Hebrew are my dominant and Russian is in therd please. I am trying to learn Arabic and I this method is great but sometimes it relates to aword in Hebrew and I buld an imedge around it and sometimes in English. When I try to remember the word sometimes I don't remember what language I used to build the imedge. What do I do? BTW stiking to one language is hard.

Thank you for the video! My only criticism is, wouldn't it cause you to remember a language as a step after english, causing you to process first english, then the mnemorics and only then to try to produce words? So 3x times to process and speak, as opposed to native level speaking?

I like how he acknowledges this random smashing mnemonic technique is not as powerful as memory palaces. Just do the palaces! We keep trying to reinvent the wheel to 'save time'. Palaces is the best method; I've searched and tried exhaustively, and I'm on my 3rd language now.

This works the problem is that to be fluent in a language you need to learn at least 10,000 words so this is quite a long winded way to remember them all. I’ve applied it a few times and when I do I have to sort of pause and recreate the scene in my head in order to recall the word which is definitely not a real time solution to recalling vocabulary. Often also, the sounds of foreign languages don’t map easily to English and you’re forced to be excessively creative with how you map the word to your visual (as he illustrated with German and russian) and often I find that I can recall the scenario but not word in the other language. Just my 2c.

The memory thing is only needed until you see the word used a few times. After that, you know the word. I agree -- this is much too slow to use forever. And "fluent" takes years.

You do not need to insert any of the information in your mind palace. Here's why. You've memorized, essentially, two things: 1. The word 'butterfly' in a different language. (For example, mariposa) 2. Which language that is. (In this case, Spanish.) You've turned both of those into pictures (mariposa = marry pose; Spanish = decoration, outfits, flag, bull) The word "Spanish" acts as your mind palace in the sense that it stores the information. It links to the other thing you want to remember, which is "mariposa". You think to yourself, What's the word for butterfly in Spanish? And the word "Spanish" reminds you of the decorations, the outfits and the bull, which then remind you of marry pose, which then reminds you of "mariposa".

Then the more effective strategy than this tips is space repetition. Carry out vocabulary note wherever you go. Open that whenever needed.

03:20 what? Haven't you seen the movie Papillon? Prisoner in French Polynesia has a tattoo of a butterfly. 05:00 why don't use the pasta? It is Italian, it looks like a butterfly, there you have it and BTW in danish and other scandinavian languages, I'm norwegian, sommerfugl is directly translated summer bird, fugl=bird

I couldn't even recall 3 out of these 10 you made, I even forgot what stupid pictures you made for each so it'd be a struggle to recall the picture first and then struggle to recall the word if it wasn't close enough. You apparently took some time to prepare for this video, but, doing this for every word we learn will take eternity. So,I don't see this strategy efficient.

Could you make a video where you learn an artificial language like Esperanto? I think that, you can learn it in a bit of time. Maybe the logic of the language will be funny for you. It isn't like the national languages, you won't need invest much time or money. Also, you know that bilingual person have advantages, so, your followers could learn it with your motivation. It's definitely worth it! First of all, it's free, just like its predecessor. Second, it's not going to take much of your time. You can be doing whatever you are doing right now and still take this course. Third, this course is very helpful in career perspective. It explains how you can be creative and bring paradigm shifts in different career paths you choose. Moreover, while a few things can seem to be repetitive from the last course, they will only help you to reinforce what you already learned. So, I should say you should definitely take it, because learning is always going to be helpful, and never a waste of time :)

IMHO: This "LINKING" method of memory seems to be much more troublesome, than practical!!! It requires taking a lot of time, struggling to connect ABSTRACT sounding "foreign words" by converting some weird, cartoon-ish, "mental image", to another equally abstract image related to the "mother-tongue" (source language), and then somehow trying to remember these "connections, for a lifetime!..... It's way too inefficient, slow, and fallible.
