I'm going to be honest, I thoroughly disagree with you on the whole "they needed to make drastic changes to make it palatable to a non-anime audience" thing. Detective thrillers, cat-and-mouse-games, sociopaths, basic explorations of concepts like justice, those are all very common to Western audiences - just look at Sherlock Holmes or Dexter. That's exactly why Death Note would have been the perfect series for Hollywood to adapt as an intro to anime as an art form - it's already a story/genre/character-archetype that's familiar to non-anime fans. Yes, there were definitely aspects that would have to be changed for a movie (cutting down on the repetitive narration, paring down the overdramatic notebook shots, putting some of their own twists in within the rules of the story, fitting the races for a changed setting, altering a few character eccentricities, making Misa less unpalatable, ageing Light up to college-age at least, etc.), and that's true with any adaptation - if you're not making changes, you're cosplaying the original. But they should NOT have changed the basic tone of the film. It is a cat-and-mouse detective game, not a gory teen MacBeth slasher. The fact that the L-Light conflict wasn't the main focus is a fundamental error on the part of the filmmakers. Honestly, I'm more disappointed with Death Note than Ghost In The Shell. At least what they were trying to adapt had hurdles to jump for a Western audience. This could have been a straight obstacle-free run for Death Note, but they bungled it into a version that doesn't reflect the original for fans and just comes across as "eh, alright but forgettable" for non-fans. Make a 70-80% faithful adaptation or take the basic concept and do something completely different with new characters, but don't try to do both. EDIT: Also, they picked Seattle since it's the suicide capital of the US. Could have made for some interesting plot moments (esp. with Ray Penber's fiance), but got wasted for the obvious 'raining bodies' shot.
@Naglfar94
@Naglfar94 6 жыл бұрын
Uh one question about your whole post why..Age Light up to college age exactly?? When he was fine how he was in the manga/anime I mean there is really no point in really aging him at all what he was like 17? I think at the start of Death Note and then shortly after as time does pass by in the anime/manga he enters colledge. I believe Light is if memory serves me right 23 when he died. So a significant amount of time passed by between the start and end of Death Note.
@Kralex121
@Kralex121 6 жыл бұрын
Death Note is considered an entry-level anime by a lot of people for a reason, since a lot of it's base concepts are not exclusive to anime audiences. The most anime thing in the entire series would be Misa's colorful personality. So yeah, pretty much agree with you on that.

I am a hardcore Death Note fan. OVERALL, the movie sucked but wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. PROS: The best part of the movie was DEFINITELY Ryuk. OH MY GOSH he looked so creepy and so cool! Of course, his personality was slightly different, but, MY GOODNESS, his laugh gave me goosebumps! CONS: The cheezy music at the end (which you pointed out) and the REALLY CRINGY AND AWKWARD MAKEOUT/SEX SCENES BETWEEN LIGHT AND MIA WHILE THEY WERE USING THE DEATH NOTE. LIKE WTF. THAT WAS SO FREAKN WEIRD I ALMOST THREW UP. But I honestly want to watch it again just for Ryuk. I hope they cast Dafoe again if they decide to do a sequel!

I dunno, I hear this "it's for a different audience!" argument a lot, but it seemed like they basically dumbed down the source material... So are they aiming for a stupider audience? Was that the plan? People who don't like anime can still appreciate the things that make Death Note good. When you take a good thing and run with it, you end up with something awesome that appeals to people outside of the usual niche- like people who don't generally go for Fantasy like Game of Thrones, for example. Regardless of the setting, if the story is good and the characters are good, people will embrace it. When you try to cater to what you THINK people will like rather than just letting the strength of the source material stand on its own, you end up with this rubbish.

"Reach a much larger and wider audience" HOW? By being shit? Death Note anime and manga reached far larger and wider audience than this. It's probably the most popular "Japanese cartoon". There was even a guy who murdered someone and called himself Kira. Outside of Japan. The only people who watched this movie were those who had liked the anime. I dare you to find even a single person that hadn't seen the anime, but saw the movie. Well, a person that wasn't born after Death Note anime finished airing.

Completely disagree. It fails as a movie and as an adaptation; I don't mind movie adaptations changing the original story, but it has to be actually good. In this version, the romance was rushed and cheesy. I don't even know why Mia liked Light. It seemed to me like she was only interested in the Death Note. Light was dumb, L was supposedly smart but we're not privy to any of his deductive process. Mia's murderous personality comes out of nowhere to absolve Light of guilt. The themes are all over the place: considering the last couple lines it's clear they thought they were making a morally ambiguous movie but they ruined it by making Mia a clear villain and L's side of justice is underdeveloped. The movie's tone is all over the place with its dumb final destination deaths and cheesy music yet it wants us to take it seriously. I'm not trying to write an essay so I'll stop here but this movie was shit even as a standalone

Eh, you praise that the movie changed a lot of stuff, but from what I heard none of those changes were made for the better and the direction was so far shifted into a Final Destination gorefest, that one has to ask themself "In what ways does this movie profit from being a Death Note movie". If you can't have a focus on mindgames and murder chess, there is no reason why Light should be a genius, which he isn't in this one. That also begs the question: Why does L exist in this movie? L is supposed to be Light's intellectual equal. Both of them are supposed to outsmart each other, trying to get one step ahead and kind of play off each other to grow in their methods. From what I gather there was only one instance in the movie were L was at an advantage over Kira, so why have him? Or what is the point in making Light a stupid, bullied, underdog character who even has his own stereotypical school bullys, other than make the movie into an american movie cliché. Now I did only see other reviews and clips from the movie, I won't get a Netflix subscribtion just so I can do that to myself right now, so of course my opinion isn't going to be the most valid. But the point still stands that if the changes you make are not going to make the movie better or are important to fit the other changes, should you really praise the movie for making those changes?

Korodan the Lion King It's called an adaptation. It's not dismissing or bluntly taking pages from the original work and is more of a stand-alone adaptation. Besides, The Netflix version of Light Yagami displays his intellect through the film's ending in an intricate plot that would make Yagami proud. Moreover, the future sequels will focus on Light escalating more into his darker, ruthless, manipulative and cerebral personality from the manga series.

@@vanlalkimhangsing4250 I know this comment is 4 years old, but I'm gonna answer anyway. First of all, if it wants to be an standalone adaptation with it's own plot and not being like the original... why is the main character called Light? Why calling himself Kira? Why is his shinigami Ryuk? Why is his father the cop that works with L to capture Kira? Why is there a super genius detective that calls himself L, trying to capture Kira? And why does he have someone named Watari helping him? You either make your own thing or follow the original plot (you can make minor changes or add a few things, don't get me wrong), but you can't do both. Also, what part of the ending is "intricate" or a display of intellect? You don't need to be a genius to think of that plot, and is easy to think of a plot when the Death Note, basically, lets you make people do anything you want without any real limitation.

I just wish, rather then trying to do an adaptation the they the did, that they had changed the names entirely and went the way of a sequel from the start. Like the note finds it's was back into the human realm 100 years later and this occurred. That would make the total derailment or the story and the shitty characters a lot more acceptable.

It would have been far more interesting if the directors kept the original franchise but made their own protagonists and plot. They could have put the death note into the hands of someone completely different than Light and show how they would use its' power. Maybe some references from the original manga and even use the same shinigami.... Even have a grown up Near get involved ... Such a waste.

YES! Honestly, I went into this movie with "this is an adaptation, they will make it different from the anime so lets not think about anime" but it was so hard because they tried to keep the original while trying to change it to make it their own that they just rushed through it and made it a mess. If it were to be someone different, they could have been able to make the changes they made, go sooo much better and smoother without having the audience go "what?' that's just my opinion .

Shortyy Love I disagree which you actually, I think that they didn't try to make it the same, I mean yea it was a terrible movie, and they kept the key aspects of the original story "a teen gets the power to kill criminals in the name of justice and is hunted by a famous private detective" they just threw in some references like the apple and the candy to please the original audience, but it really did appeal to a much larger audience, and I don't think it would have appeased (even slightly) the original fans or other people if it didn't change it the way it did.

It's very strange that he is harder on the drama series because of a minor change in Light's personality, but this movie that can't even establish itself even if it was an original series. Keith Stanfield,, he's an amazing actor that showed so much potential to be a great L. But the script did him dirty. I think if someone was to make another movie or the sequel is better I'd want Keith to play L. Whether it be a more true to the anime & manga film or another one of these adaptation I think he's a great L regardless of skin colour and the lack of authenticity compared to the L character design (I don't think that personally I just see people hating on him like that online). For me Ryuk and L saved the movie. I was ready to turn it off the moment Light first met Ryuk but hearing William Dafoe's voice kept me optimistic and able to push forward. At the end of the day I don't think this is the worst film I've ever seen. Do I think it sucked? Yes. Could it of been better even with sticking to the American adaptation concept? Yes. It really had potential to presently surprise everyone but sadly they weren't able to accomplish that. If they do create a sequel I hope they can do the almost impossible and make a sequel better than the original movie.

Mariah Thomas Ikr? I'm not angry at the fact that they made a lot of changes to the movie, in fact I wanted exactly that. What really matters in the similarities is that the movie should have the basic concept: a teen found a death note and uses it to 'purify' the world. The rest should be up to the directors' imagination. And yet, the movie was complete and utter garbage. I don't mind the actors, after all what really matters is the talent not looks, but the script butchered all the characters (I mean L showing himself to the public? Really??) Not only that but the movie became another cliche Hollywood action movie. I could write an essay why I didn't like the movie, but one thing for sure is that with better scripts and better execution the movie would have been good. Not great, but not bad.

Yes, I was in an anime club where one of the members tried to argue with me that Ryuk stunk, his CGI was bad, The actor did terrible etc... They never once stated a why (because there wasn't one other than their opinion), and whenever I presented my argument with objective standards they said it was my opinion.

When Light first said Ryuk's name, I was really worried. But then Ryuk came along and told him that he pronounced it wrong, which was pretty cool. It would have been unnatural for an American to know how it's pronounced, so they made him actually learn how to pronounce it, rather than pronouncing it wrong the whole time, or giving Light the random knowledge of Japanese pronounciations.

Aran Monroy I though the drama was pretty good. They made Light easier to empathize with and had good twists to the characters without moving away too much from the source material

Confidential Bubble Tea I feel Netflix's Light Turner was based on the Light Yagami of the Jdrama. I preferred the Jdrama version as he had more screen time to be sympathetic yet still the manipulative sociopath we know & love.

The reason the actor who played L was pretty good was the fact that he did extensive research on the character and then was told to act not like L in certain scenes

Honestly I think L's actor is extremely talented. I enjoyed almost every scene he appeared in, one way or another, just because his sheer skill is entertaining to watch. It's a shame the script for L was pretty inconsistent and lackluster.

I had never seen death note when I saw the movie, and maybe that is why I enjoyed it as much as I did. I knew the core concepts of death note--have to be living under a rock to not--but I'd never SEEN it. This movie made me want to see what this was based on. In that way, I think it succeeds as an introduction into Death Note.

i think that the reason why L wasn't acting as much like L towards the end of the movie was because of the fact they didn't add near and mello (his successors) into the movie, therefore instead of adding them, they added their characteristics into L's personality. for example mello's rage and near's deductions+assumptions. idk though edit: this can also be shown by the large amount of puzzles n shit around L with scenes that he's in like there's one but where there's a rubix cube next to him and from the anime everyone knows that near liked solving puzzles

Fun fact, Light is played by the one of the leads of the Naked Brothers Band, Nat Wolff. If that's not enough, the lady who played Mia was formerly Nat's IRL girlfriend.

Okay, but really: I watched the movie with dread because I kinda have a "Dragon Ball: Evolution"-sized trauma about anime adaptations. I liked some aspects of it - Misa was not as gouge-your-eyes-out annoying as she was in the manga. I liked L for the most part. But like so many others have pointed out already: the core of the story was completely lost and replaced by something I have seen in every US movie ever. Which made it horribly boring to me.

Pers Godiva I did like the film as a live action movie as it was good as I did like Light and William Dafoe as the demon but the hate on this film is something else.
@navels553

Thomas Fernandez you calling him "the demon" makes me realize you didn't watch the show. This movie deserves the hate it gets, and even on its own separated from death note has some nonsensical incorrect character moment. Light Turner still likes Mia after what she did? Mia gets angry at Light Turner despite what she did? But it did have some good stuff, the shot composition and acting was WAY above average. L contradicts his own character, said he'd never kill but reaches for a gun. I don't like that. BUT! The movie has its merits, it deserves SOME praise. I enjoyed it like how I enjoy Fast & Furious, the cheap emotional thrills work on me, the action scenes were good. I give the movie 6/10 *IF* you ignore it came from Death Note (that's actually a good score, it means it's average which is way better than a lot of movies), but only a 4/10 if you acknowledge the source.
