I've noticed actually a lot of Wattpad stories do that. they set up the main character as normal and plain but force "sexy incidents" to always happen around her and her crush to somehow show us that she's in fact super hot and the crush gets turned on or some shit. it disturbs me to be honest that so many authors (which are obviously young girls) think that a legit way to get ur crush to notice u is to take off ur clothes whenever he's around
@nana-uf5ql
@nana-uf5ql 4 жыл бұрын
crispy exactly like the main character always describes herself as plain girl, and then in the crush's pov he keeps gushing over how hot she is and how much she turns him on it also perpetuates the mentality that girls shouldn't think they're beautiful until a guy tells them, self confidence is not something for women 🙄

Arlene Paul I think he still could have been jealous and have that be a little bit of a plot point, but it would have to be because of a “I’m jealous because everyone pays attention to him and likes him, but he’s a terrible person, what the hell” kind of way. But nnnnnope! I feel like this over all could have been good, but they missed the glaring opportunity to make it a critique on stories with borderline abusive guys (which sucks, ‘cause I was really starting to think that that’s what it was, especially when her friend became worried about her)

@@prowlandsasuke I get what you mean, but I think in place of personal experience teenagers use media as kind of a window into what to expect. For example, I'm a teenager and I know this behaviour is toxic, and I think it's partially because I've always been taught to be fairly skeptical of other people and because (depending on where you look) the internet likes to talk about and call out toxic relationships/behaviour. I do however think you're right that a lot of teens or kids who romanticize unhealthy relationships probably do because they haven't been shown what healthy relationships look like.

With a change of director and music, that scene could have been a really cool Turning Point in a better movie. Almost could be a liar revealed feel to the scene where this is the moment when the main character realizes that the protective-but-sweet one is her best friend not the violent older brother. This could have gone into an interesting exploration of the intricate psychological and sociological forces placed on best friend as the brother of a formerly abusive person who is outwardly on the mend.

Honestly, adding to her point at the end of the video- not only should we get to 'boys try to fix their toxic behavior in films', we could do the baby step of getting filmmakers to *stop portraying that toxic behavior as sexy and romantic*? Like they're all here saying "oh, some people are just broken and messed up, I'm being realistic"- but for why are you trying to make that into #relationship goals for someone's Pinterest board? It just bugs me so much that they act as though they're being 'real' and 'serious' in dealing with the flaws of real humans, and yet they're just like "you don't understand, he screams at her and hits the car bc he loves her :)" like that isn't encouraging people to stay in abusive relationships.

Morley Agreed. The difference is in the tone and audience the movie is intended for. If the same kind of trope was in a drama intended for adult audiences and presented with nuance then it would be ok. not only are these movies bad for teen girls, they’re bad for teen boys! when you think about it, a lot of the bad stuff in these movies are exactly what teen boys are looking for, many times sexually. all the butt stuff, for example. then there’s the immediate forgiving of the guy who sexually harassed the girl just because he says sorry. there’s the girl “standing up for herself” by being sexual entertainment for all the boys in their bathroom. the whole dominating (often times abusive) thing that these movies make look attractive can be really harmful to teen boys who want to be in a relationship.

also regarding the whole idea of "taming the beast" more often than not with these beasts they actually CANNOT be tamed, especially by a ~female love interest~, because these beasts aren't only abusive, but also prideful as hell with their ~masculinity~ and all their "WHAT!!! A WOMAN!!!! DARES!!!!!! TELL ME!!!!! WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!" real life really is nowhere near these horrible teen movies,,,,,,,,,,,,, this kind of behaviour becoming widespread through media normalises something that most definitely SHOULDN'T be normal,,,,, i sincerely wish people would stop funding these horrible plots and catering them to ANYBODY and instead fund and promote more empowering plots... you can be both romantic and realistic without sacrificing one or the other......

And maybe her best friend the entire time was just trying to protect her and when he said that the reason he didn't want her to date his brother was basically because he was a possessive little freak, he was lying having been threatened by his brother. And he has genuine fear of him as he had suffered years of abuse, physical and emotional. When he set his sights on his friend, he knew he couldn't stop him, so he had to stop *her* somehow. When she told him he had to accept her and his' relationship, the best friend knew it was too late and that she'd have to see for herself what he was like. Also, the best friend continues to ignore her in the second movie because actually, the whole time, he wasn't giving her the cold shoulder, his brother was threatening to hurt her. The movie ends with him going to jail and the main character remains single at the end, because she needs to take time after the relationship instead of rebounding and the best friend remains in a healthy relationship with that other girl, finding solace for his years of abuse in the support of those he cares about and in therapy.

That "get in the car" freaked me out, and I've never been in any kind of abusive relationship, so I can only imagine what it was like for others who have. What with the brother as well, it looks like there might be enough to full on have a secret story underneath, about what Elle's rose tinted glasses don't catch, and I find that absolutely fascinating in a movie like this. Like, it just seems so blatant, I can't imagine any sequel not drawing attention to this.

About the "you were asking for it" comment. Real talk: it isn't the clothes. Your body, in and of itself, is the invitation in their eyes. Someone who believes a little dress is consent doesn't actually care what you're wearing; it's an excuse and they would harass or actually assault you no matter what you were wearing. It's not about you. It's about them and what they want.

Answering the question about if anyone had that "I suddenly have boobs" moment. I did (I'm a trans boy btw). My breasts still felt really small to me, so I didn't wear a bra. At one point the girls who bullied me started shaming me for not wearing a bra, so I started wearing one for years despite hating it. According to a friend who I talked to about it years later, I got breasts before all the girls in my year, so they were jealous and took it out by bullying me for it 🤷‍♂️ (shrug emoji)

iCarly feels like a special case because they all ran the ICarly web show and would get offers like $100,000 to advertise shoes from a shoe company on the website. I always thought it was kinda like KZfaq where you got money from the web show. So them betting $50 seemed reasonable to me in terms of the show. But yeah, every other show made NO SENSE why these 16 year olds have hundreds at their disposal for bets and dares and whatnot.

dude like that guy who proposed during an ed sheeran live performance ( it's in the channel "heart") and ed went and stopped and made everyone shut up to see what she said , and everyone in the comments like " ow that so romantic" and i was horrified because i can think of anything that could add more pressure for her than that, my only hope is that it was planned , as in that the couple talked it and agreed on doing that so she was not ambushed by surprise with a proposal. but even so,look , ed is a great artist and he seems like very nice person...but to stop the performance for a moment and put focus on the couple...unless it was all staged to the point he was in it too, don't do that without knowing that couple or if the girl wants to say yes...i can't think of a worse pressure than the singer in a concert putting the spotlight on my answer to a surprise public proposal...

That "get in the car, Elle!" legit startled me and made my anxiety levels go up a bit. If a guy tells other guys not to date you, gets into fights all the time, yells at you to get into the car while hitting the car, and is so violent that his younger brother asks if he hit you when he sees the injury on your face, those are all signs to RUN AWAY. This is like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade of red flag parades.

Sure Wattpad has these books but not all Authors write like this. I read so many good books that should be made as movies such as the "With Me" series and other books such as "Lilah" or "Storm and Silence". They make the movies for the worst books ever and there are so many good books and Authors out there that deserve this type of recognition. Honestly the books that I just listed have wonderful boys that actually don't do that shit. But "With Me" series does have that stuff but its not the main boy characters, its the extra characters, but the author makes us realize that shit aint right.
