Depends on how well ventilated the roof space is. Ducts can cause a whole other issue as no one ever cleans them. In units and apartments they usually have a central exhaust system which runs continuous at low flow to reduce noise and also reduces the amount of lint and dust drawn into the duct.
@michaelmay5453

As a Swede where that would be required I don't get it either. That'll just blow all moisture from the bathroom right into the insulation in the attic and wreak havoc over time as it rots away the wood up there. Makes absolutely no sense to me.
@michaelmay5453
@michaelmay5453 Жыл бұрын
@@noelcollins1960 In Sweden, in high rises and apartments those are cleaned out by the chimney sweeper once a year or the fire hazard insurance trips if something should happen. Doesn't even matter if that was what caused the fire, you're fucked either way. They are not low flow, they are just fairly quiet because of the distance between the extractor fans and the vent. So we do that and we use fairly straight bound metal piping or plastic but nothing anything will stick to on the way out. I've owned this home for over 30 years now, one look up there and there is nothing there, there are filters on the way and nothing will stick to that exhaust, it'll just fall down instead. Routing it to the attic over here would be insane, the temperature varies between +35 C in the summer and -40 C in the winter. You don't want well ventilated attics at -40, you want 45cm of insulation x2 and an air gap in between.

I’ve done 3 exhaust fan placements around the house. Sometimes they can be a pain to unplug depending on where the socket is. One of the fans didn’t spin anymore and the other 2 were so slow that they weren’t very effective.

Pro tip, never install a fan directly above the shower. The condensation will drip into you and you'll get cold drips in your warm shower. Put it off to the side but still just inside the shower area (or over the sink or floor drain) so the dips land inside something that is ok with the water.

@@noodlelynoodle. you need more fan lol. Do check through that there's actually enough room for air to get into the room so the fan works. Been to plenty of places where the door seals really tight. Which is great but means the fan doesn't have anywhere to draw air from. Cut a cm off the bottom of the door, the fan stays quiet when you close the door and the steam actually gets vented. Quick Fix is open a window a little.

I changed my own lightswitch today. It's illegal in Australia but I DGAF, I put a better switch in and this time the cables weren't loose, the professional installers hadn't torqued the screws down and I was wondering where that smell was coming from. DIY electrical is sadly illegal, but for like-for-like replacements is typically a child's play. Just do a decent job.

Yes sometimes electrical work can be a bit shoddy, especially in new construction where the electricians subby to the builder who is only interested in lowest cost. Most electricians who do work direct to homeowner will usually be fair and honest because they rely on each customer to be happy enough to call them again and recommend them to others.

Does ESV require you to provide yourself a certificate of electrical safety in this case? Our because no money changed hands it wasn't required or because it was a trivial plug swap? Different states in Australia have different rules, but as this was a plug in fan and didn"t require any wiring work it would not even require an electrical licence. Usually the only time the inspecting authorities are supposed to be notified is if it is new or additional work.

Sorry, but "tip number 1" really should be "never stand directly under a grate, ceiling lamp assembly, etc, which you are taking off". You will always get disgusting crap falling all over you if you do, no matter how careful you are. I always forget this one until it's too late, too. IMHO, tip 2 should also be: "Whenever possible, turn off the power in at least two different ways." For example, in this case, make sure that both the switch and the breaker are in the "off" position before starting work. (If you're working on something that doesn't have a switch, then turn off _both_ the main panel breaker and the sub-breaker leading to that circuit, etc) That way even if somehow one of them gets switched back on (or you flipped the wrong one somehow, or something's wired up in an unexpected way, etc), you're still likely protected. I would also point out that just because there's an outlet involved _does not mean that safety stops at the outlet._ Yes, it has a plug on it, but that is still an exposed fan assembly you are fiddling with in your hands, and depending on how well it's put together you could very well come in contact with bare wires in the fan itself, regardless of whether it has a plug or not on it. You're basically working on a plug-in appliance while it's plugged in with its case open (in this case, the "case" is the ceiling itself), so yes, you do still need to make sure power is appropriately disconnected. It's not just the romex in the wall that can kill you.

@@noelcollins1960 right, but isn't there an exclusion zone around the shower head or some such too? I dunno, it's all a bit confusing. I think the rules may have changed recently; either that or we were sold an inline unit we didn't need 😔. Or maybe it's just a matter of our installer being overly cautious.
@noelcollins1960
@noelcollins1960 Жыл бұрын
@@gunderd The zoning starts at the fixed plumbing point for the shower. They used to specify all positions for the shower head which made sense if you had a 1.8m hand held shower head, but they have since dropped that. Moist air blown straight to the wooden rafters? A very, very bad idea. It is worth making some simplest duct transporting this air directly outside. The fan is needed to replace the humid air with fresh air from the fresh air source, I don't see the point of hanging it directly above the shower to remove the humid air immediately. Dripping drops, which you can read about in the comments, result from the condensation of water vapor that occurs because the air in the exhaust duct is cold. Advice? Use an insulated ventilation pipe.

So good advice for the diyer as to just killing the mains, but still. Even though your unplugging from a 413, being youtube you probably should have shown some form of test for dead even though you already knew. Diy people dont often know anything. Im sure had it not been a video knowing it was in a socket you would have just done it with the switch off, if it was hard wired, hit the circuit.
