As to why Fabi didn't play e4, in the post-game interview Caruana said that he saw/assumed there were many winning possibilities, but he just decided to calculate Rd1, and once he saw that this was completely winning he didn't bother to think about any of the other options.

#suggestion do a series on caruana's historic run of 7 wins in a row to start the 2014 Sinquefield Cup, on his way to an all-time record tournament rating of 3103. he defeated, in order, topalov, MVL, carlsen, aronian, nakamura, topalov again, and MVL again. having clinched the tournament victory already, he drew his final 3 games to finish with 8.5/10. Aronian called the performance "historic" and it is even more so now given that he went on to become the world championship challenger. 538 covered it at the time: fivethirtyeight.com/features/fabiano-caruana-is-doing-the-impossible-at-chesss-most-competitive-tournament/

[at 9.45, resign situation: Rook to C8 protects the knight, and neither Queen nor Knight can capture it. Also Queen cannot now go to the 8 row for checkmate; If white knight to D6, you can capture it (with knight from D4), and have Rook + Knight vs Queen, in uncomfortable position, but still; not immediate loss or: Rook to F8. Unless you organize a double attack vs the knight, it can protect the king, and if captured, king responds. Then probably pawn to H5 to create some movement escape options for the king. (to prevent getting mated by White's knight.) Unpleasant for sure, but I don't see the guaranteed loss yet. Several lines are open, allowing for connected Rooks. one H-line (H5) is open for king, you could even entertain ideas like using Rook from D4 to capture on A3, and create a past pawn. Queen will have something to say probably though. I think a real problem here is actually the black knight.. it is on border edge so doesn't have many movement options.. and moving it loses. ] NVM, Just realized: after Rook C8, White still continues Queen to E6, for picking up Rook and a checkmate. With King on G8 you don't have the move to connect the Rooks. Lesson: always leave some 'breathing space' for king; don't put knight on board edge; Knights that CAN be connected next move, *aren't* right now.

I cant wait for the video about today's game Carlsen vs Caruana... I watched it all and I've been through high and low's same as the players at the table... (no spoilers about the result) but i do want to point out the confessional gesture Magnus did.. just like Yasser in the studio, I also think this match is a great preparation and is only building up the tension for the following title match.

Agadmator, how come e4 is a valid continuation for white? if the black king goes to f8 after king checks and exchanges everything with tempo as you said he is still left with a rook against a rook (white checks and wins the knight back, but king escapes without the need to sac the rook) can anyone explain please? Thanks
@Lens98052
@Lens98052 6 жыл бұрын
I figured out a while ago that playing f6 and castling gives black an exposed king which can only run to h8 which results in a back rank weakness that can only be removed by playing g6 or h6, both of which further weaken the king's position further. Black has to defend against white's queen going on the a2-g8 diagonal, the queen invading on f7 and white taking ownership of the seventh rank. All of this is too much. White can simply play on the rest of the board and black is tied down by his king weaknesses too much to play effectively across the rest of the board. It is just that Karjakin walked into not defending at all. As to why Caruana did not play e4, he probably saw the other line won easily with no possibility of any counter-play by black and at this level you simply save your mental energy for something else at that point. No need to win a won game twice. I immediately saw that e4 was a good candidate move, and then saw that Rd1won easily and so then thought "why should I bother to analyze e4?".

Bear in mind as you show the Carlsen v Caruana record that the stats are time sensitive. Caruana hasn't beaten Carlsen in classical time controls since 2015. Second, I think the number 1 Elo matters to Carlsen -- a lot. Third, I think this Sinquefield game is very important to Caruana psychologically. I think he believes he needs a win or at least a very well controlled draw. And that pressure may influence the outcome of this game.
