A lot of coils are compatible with both, just a different metering device

Ive seen it 2 times where a guy actually filled a 22 system with 410a because the cost of 22 and its been running like that for 10 years.

Leak search and repair + flush + replace condenser. You can make a great living by just going behind the ‘smart techs’😂. Sadly the home owners have no clue these hacks are doing this to them. Funny enough that’s how our unit is set up… superheat/subcooling is off like a mofo but I ended up adjusting my fan speed to get a good delta air temp and it’s been working for awhile now

I’ve never done this but seen it done plenty of times at my last job. The science behind it is that Newer r22 scroll compressors come with Poe oil in them so you can use a r-22 replacement such as 427a, mo99, etc. this is the same oil that 410a systems use and the bypass head pressure for a r22 scroll compressor is 375. So some places instead of buying a 410a compressor will buy a r22 compressor and put it in a 410a system they’d do this to save a few hundred bucks. The units would run just fine but if the compressor ever went bad I’d replace it with the correct compressor.

This just goes to show some HVAC dudes are 1,000% incompetent.

You would be surprised how well a miss matched system like that will work. I mean it's not great but I have seen units just like that run for years

I know of a 410A system running 407C with an R22 TXV 😂 You can’t test the charge worth a shit but it cools great. Customer said just leave it as is.

Years ago when the auto industry switched from R-12 To R 134a when you went to class the instructor would explain all the reasons the two systems were incompatible. But the mechanic s that worked on fleets and taxi cabs would say they would just suck the old system out and add oil and recharge, I do believe them when they say the owners are not going to spend the money to do it right

May not be the right thing to do, but I have seen this many times. They are compatible. That's why it's being done.

Compressor with r22 use mineral oil and r410 uses a poe oil.

I installed to r22 at the beach years ago. Maximum time on oceanfront about 10 years. Couldn't go back to replace them after rust out a condensers. I go back someone has replaced the outdoor condensers with r410 14 seer units. R22 evaporator coils liquid dryers not replaced pistons not replaced. Both lasted about three years until the evaporator coils began to leak. Both Goodman. Both units a liberally applied a anti-corrosive products. If I would have done it they have blown up on the first day.

Iv done a few 410a coils but I removed the txv and put r22 txv in. Worked fine

Good thing is you only need to change the condenser now. Maybe want to find the leak, probably on a solder joint considering the air handler is new. But that compressor is deffinately damaged now.

I’ve seen it work like that, but….the systems runs a low superheat because the 410-a valve opens farther than the R22 valve because of suction temp and design and yada yada. Low superheat at the compressor is the result

You match the Freon to the expansion device . And make sure the oil is compatible . Things get sticky when it’s a heat pump .

You can replace the txv with an r22 txv. It’ll work, I see it a lot in military housing

I know what you’re saying I get it. But it worked for 20 years. So it had to provide some cooling, but I’ve only seen it on older equipment that uses a cap tube. And it cooled at a much lower capacity. How the compressor lasted. I will never know.

thats normal to me just change the metering device or adjust it to 22a gas and you are good to go

I worked for a home warranty company, they ordered a new straight cool condenser 410A and told me to install it. I get to the residence and find the old system is a heat pump R22 only . I inform them that we need to replace the indoor coil as well. They told me to install the condenser and use my best judgment. There were so many situations at that company that didn’t sit right with me. I ended up leaving the company

That cu calls for a txv. Even says “indoor txv sub cooling 12*” right on the CU tag. I’ve really only seen them on a few old Lennox systems but they’re out there. That’s the wrong txv though so it would work but not efficiently. If they loaded it with 410 the it probably leaked somewhere at the CU. Whoever installed that ah screwed those people. When switching to 410 you should swap both units and replace or flush the lines depending on size and length. Quick fixes to get air almost always lead to even more costly repairs

My house was built in 09. Has an R22 condenser with a 410A Evap, piston. Uses R22. Got a 40f Evap with 15 degrees system superheat and about the same of subcooling. Probably rubbed out somewhere and lost the charge. I fix machines (commercial) that lost charge all the time. Change the drier, pull a long vacuum and recharge. I still use R22 if the customer wants to pay for it

I’ve actually installed a R22 valve on a 4-10a system by accident of course due to me just being the green installer and I couldn’t get any more than a 10* delta

I have an r22 2003 2.5 ton goodman. It has some leaks in the coils I was told that the coils have to be replaced and refill refrigerant or get a new package system😢.

I’ve seen R22 condensers work with R410a Air handlers w/TXV. Also seen R410a condenser w/ R22 txv Air handler which doesn’t work.

Ni r22 is usually fixed orphace right ? 410 is what a txv is usually used for for the boiling temp pops it opened on demand

In the auto world, as long as you remove all traces of the previous refrigerant, you can run any refrigerant after that so long as the oils are still rated to protect the compressor. Which thankfully oils and metals haven't changed much, so oil really isn't the problem.

Where did the refrigerant leak out? The leak location will suggest which refrigerant the system was recharged with and how extensive the additional damage is likely to be. I won't deal with home warranty companies, if for no reason than their attempts to bandaid systems until their coverage runs out, they can find a loophole to treat an issue as the subcontractor's responsibility or to say the repairs are outside the scope of their policy.

Not without an R22 charge and expansion device. It also won't work with no charge.

I’ve seen it about 4 times, and somehow it works for years. I think R22 on a 410 valve will work, although not correct, but 410 on an R22 valve definitely won’t work.

The min feed through a txv especially a ton and half txv is enough to cool the house usually. The puron TXv will push head pressure up a little but it will be below relief valve cutout

Yes I’ve seen it and yes it will cool. But the only time I will do it. If it’s a piston r22 air handler and the condenser goes. I’ll put a 410a condenser on it and it runs perfect pressures everytime. And that’s only for someone whos really desperate and got low funds. Gives them 5 year parts on the condenser only.

Cnn refill with r407 but must must do for vacuum complete

Seen it many times as most guys that do a inside replacement never change the txv. Honestly for your average system it works ok is it right no does it work mostly yes. On that one I'd be more concerned about the lack of refrigerant. If it really bothers ya pop it out put a piston in and leave the valve for future use

My r22 unit runs a 410a coil with the right piston size it had a .67 before I used it

well after they steal the valuable r22 or assuming so by reading the label 🏷️ not the actual conversion ... they're usually disappointed at thier lesser quality refrigerant

I did it at my house put 005 carrier ahu 410 on a trane 15 xl flat top r 22 condenser . It's been heating and cooling fine for 7 years ++

Ive actually seen it work alot. Never efficiently, but it does cool. Used to do some work for a cheap apartment complex and they always wanted to supply the equipment when it failed so we just put it in the way they asked and told em no warranty. They also frequently had us install 410a heatpump condensers on 20 year old r22 air handlers. But they paid us good, and we had tons of service calls there to say the least! We tried telling them dozens of times that this is not right and its going to fail, but the stubborn maintenance supervisor thought he knew hvac better than someone who’s been doing it for 20 years lol. Oh well, more money in our pockets.

Now the coil will have r22 oil in it , if you put r410 condeser will you clean the coil ? I saw a unit that outdoor was r410 with r22 coil with r22 txv worked ok for 10 years!

All do is change the piston out side to match the txv. Retro fit

R22 condenser will work with a 410a airhandler with txv but 410a condenser with r22 airhandler txv won't work

R22 and 410 same coil for most companies the only thing that changes is the txv ,if they had 410 in the r22 condenser it will blow the condenser coil thats why it was empty

Don't know why it wouldn't work? I have an extremely Frankensteined system that's been operating flawlessly for 5 or 6 year's now. Didn't realize prices were about to shoot to the moon.

If they had a piston, you could switch it out to a 410 from an R 22 I was always told not to mix them especially with the newer units

They for got to remove the metering device to the right refrigerant. The coil can handle it.

NFIP only covered the condenser units of my brother in laws house after a flood. He had the sense to pay for new air handlers to match the new refrigerant though.

My supervisor told me you can put 22 in a 410 system but you cant for some reason put 410 in a 22 system

I've seen that same deal but not sure if it worked because I got the call to go troubleshoot. It was not functioning properly when I showed up.

Then you have not worked on many home warranty services jobs. Because that is how home warranty companies fix a leaking evaporator coil. They only change out half of the system. Not the whole thing.

That’s crazy. Low on charge, no it’s not going to work. But, the mix matched equipment. No, I can’t see that it would have worked. Obviously who would ever try it! At least change the TXV.

I have installed a evap on old r22 you just need to adjust the txv it works almost perfectly
