@@Triro I understand completely what's happening, and excited for fun, unintuitive possibilities. Seems like you've drunk the anti-corp koolaid a little hard, I really don't see how letting users have more control over transcodes is bad, especially for small streamers where previously offering transcodes wasn't profitable for twitch. Yes it's a cost saving measure. But that doesn't mean it's inherently evil. I don't understand why you are so mad about "performance" most gaming PCs still have hardware that isn't being fully utilised for encode sessions.

"No, we will continue to provide transcode options to partners." I don't see how they're cutting costs here, it's not like partners will need to transcodes on their own now, they're just giving the options to Non-partners to have transcoding, which is 100% going to use more bandwidth on their server as well 🤦‍♂️ I think Epos knows what he's talking about, you on the other hand don't have a clue. You clearly haven't listened carefully. He said the cap is 4-10mbps FOR NOW. They might end up increasing even more, and without AV1 at that. We aren't getting AV1 yet! So clearly they'll need more than 10mpbs for h264 streams (even h265). Next time keep your silly comments if you don't have anything useful to say... 😂

Something that should be a bigger focus when talking about this is the fact that those streamer-provided NVENC 720p / 480p encodes will absolutely look better than the current Twitch transcodes, to the point that the average viewer should easily be able to tell the difference, but I'm sure we'll see that when people start testing it. Twitch's transcoding infrastructure is lagging behind current consumer HW encoders in quality, and one compression pass is always better than two. On a different note, is there any word on whether the 4070 Super will have 1 or 2 NVENC chips? 4070 has 1 and 4070 TI has 2.

I want control, I am worried that you are only allowed to use AV1 and multi-track video streams if you let Twitch control it. I personally want one normal stream, for me that would be one h264 1008p (my current setup, ill prob even go back to 936p) and the better 1440p or 1008p AV1 track. Thats all I need, and it would be a dream come true. I am not looking to do 3 or more encodes, I feel like any lower res transcodes are unnecessary for an FPS stream

Something I keyed into was when you mentioned auto captioning. Native auto captioning will be nice especially if it can label closed captions by source. Seeing how Teams transcribes meetings by person is awesome. I can only imagine a discord transcription plug in that ties to OBS and can do captions per person (as an option, or limit it to the just the streamer)

Oh, NVENC HEVC as well? That's interesting - as I understood it, the push for AV1 was because it didn't require licensing that H265 / HEVC did, and why people didn't recommend streaming it to KZfaq as well IIRC. In my experience (with Plex stuff), H265 itself is a *wild* jump in efficiency over 264, and suddenly, the notion of having a ladder at 2.5-3.5mbps - when almost everything out there has a H265 decoder - sounds immediately a lot better. No more number-crunching!

Very glad Twitch is finally taking a step forward in some capacity towards AV1. I have some questions though about the performance impact streaming multiple video feeds would have on a single pc stream setup. I am slightly disappointed that this will be a NVIDIA only feature for the time being as I am using AMD, but what's new there honestly? Hopefully that opens up to AMD and Intel at some point in the near future. I really hope that they will be able to figure this out without too much issue, it is Twitch though so I'm not going to say there won't be any issues. Either way it is good to see that they are at least trying to stay competitive with KZfaq in the viewer's quality experience. It feels like a compromise but at least it is a start.

Twitch supporting HEVC will make it worthwhile even to stream with older GPUs like a GTX 960 - 1060 or AMD RX 460 - 580 etc ... (with the GPUs connected to a secondary PC dedicated to the stream) using HEVC at 6000-8000 kbps 1080p60 fps ..., should make the stream quality look very good.

This means that you as streamer do the encoding work on your GPU and send multiple streams to twitch. And they do the rest of the traffic to serve it to the hundreds/thousand viewers. Depending on the quality of your network connection, the automatic stream configuration algorithm configures OBS Studio to encode 3 separate video qualities with aggregate bitrates between 4 Mbps to 10 Mbps

Yeah I don't see the hype around this, seems like Twitch just wants to offload the re-encoding to people with applicable hardware. Twitch already gives quality options for partnered / affiliate and otherwise low-to-mid viewership (10+) streams, I suppose the GPU encoding via AV1 would be better quality but only because Twitch has no current plans to use AV1 when re-encoding to the lower resolutions? If they are then this is even more niche. In my experience people would rather stream such low-viewership streams via Discord which has mediocre quality settings. (4K, 1080p 30/60, and 720p60 all try to use a constant bitrate of 8000Kbps, with no official option to change it) I know that's a different problem but Nvidia have just worked with Discord when they released AV1 streaming on Discord, also feels like this would have been a more appropriate scenario to test this technology.

I hope hardware AV1 and HEVC encoders catch up in quality to software x264 soon. You can see in your test clip, the text on the back wall is far more legible with the “inferior” format, even after YT recompression, because x264 is so well polished. I would wager even “medium” preset or possibly “fast” could still win. Of course it taxes your CPU, but I’ve still not seen AV1 that can compare for fine detail retention in relatively uniform areas.

I don't have an internet connection that really allows me to handle multitrack video, but I would feel better if I could stream AV1 and have Twitch transcode that instead. Even AV1 at 1080p60 3500kbps would result in a massively improved stream for my viewers, and currently I can only do that to KZfaq and not Twitch. I am also disappointed that Twitch is still going to be using RTMP and not SRT. My connection has huge issues with latency variance (StarLink), so SRT was resulting in a much better connection for myself in the testing I did with Castr (another restreamer service similar to restream io). I would still drop packets via SRT, but my streams latency would remain intact instead of lengthening, which is much better imo then having the stream "catch up" under RTMP.

HECK YEAH! - and this is WAY more complicated than I expected (which was just that they'd switch on av1, keep the same bandwidth limits (which should be fine for 4k30 at 6mb/s). pretty cool though!) alas, it's going to take a lot of upstream bandwidth and a lot of encoder power to make this happen for creators, and i'm not sure how many people are going to have the bandwidth for consistent 6m+4m+3.5m streaming (~13.5mb/s? if it stacks up that way) given lots of people are still using cable internet with crap tier upload speeds. you also need at least 3 streams of encoder power it sounds like so you'd really need a top tier gpu like a 4080/4090. to make this happen. I happen to be in an awesome place where i have both of those things and have already signed up for the beta because i'm super curious about all this, but that's a whole lot of barriers to entry. I'm hoping we'll be able to do this all ala carte (i.e. they'll switch on av1 so we can just do av1 streams if we want, and optionally have 2-4 alternate streams to provide other bandwidths and encoding formats as few or as many as we choose so that we can tune things to our needs. i'm sure we'll have more info soon. but this news is epic!

Will AV1 really be limited only to 40XX series? Because of that all owners of 30XX series will be force to change their cards...

Well RTX 3000 doesn’t have an AV1 encoder at all, that’s been known since day 1. It’s physically different hardware.

You can see the CPU AV1 encoders (SVT/AOM) that anyone can use, but are very tough to encode, but not the GPU encoders!

Is HEVC also coming to twitch for AMD GPUs? I saw an article that vaguely suggested it but it wasn't clear. Hoping it does since I'm on a 6950xt which doesn't have support for AV1 encode

This is pretty cool. I might start taking my Twitch streams seriously instead of an afterthought of my KZfaq streams.

I don't believe that the automatic configuration will be "the best" or that it will take into consideration single pc setup, or multi pc. It will also probably have poor support for people with limited upload speeds (thanks, Australian government). My first thought of them releasing this was that they are trying to sell having you do the transcoding for them and massively reducing their costs as a feature.
@EposVox
@EposVox 7 ай бұрын
They are absolutely going to utilize multi pc setups when possible.
@farasalt1745

@@EposVox my expectations are that it will take two things into consideration when starting the stream - the available upstream bandwidth and the model number of the graphics card. Sure, they may start to add other considerations later, but there is no guarantee they go beyond having presets for whatever gpu and upload capacity your system has. Edit: also refresh rate and source resolution, sorry.

The idea of "letting" streamers have multiple encodes going at once seems more like they want to offload the costs of doing that to streamers to save money. I imagine I'll need that much more computer power for each stream and that much better Internet to make it happen, all of which costs me money that Twitch doesn't have to spend. Don't like that at all.

Looking forward to Twitch allowing Creators the ability to use AV1 as their means for streaming. We’ve got nvenc, x264, and now AV1. Is there a point to having a second dedicated streaming now since AV1 is much better? Or should I use 2 pc’s as normal.

14:34 According the Nvidias "Video Encode and Decode GPU Support Matrix" the 4070 Ti also has dual encoders, or am I missing something? Also are both encoders used automatically when you run 2 jobs simultaneously? Or do you need to specifiy which of the two encoders is being used, in ffmpeg for example?

AV1 tends to be a lot more blurry compared to 264/265 specially when used with a graphics card encoding.

After the recent NSFW content that twitch allowed, I most likely won't be returning to streaming on twitch ever again. I am not sure how I feel about this new update but is it possible it will come to KZfaq? Or is it an Amazon proprietary thing? I'm assuming KZfaq will attempt to compete with it and might already have something in the works to combat it.

You already can stream to KZfaq using AV1 and HEVC.
@toggleton6365
@toggleton6365 7 ай бұрын
you can but it is different that twitch will use it. Twitch lets you encode it and the stream will served as you encode it. KZfaq does everything reencode so the user get still vp9 even when you send AV1 streams.

i believe is really viable but the software has to support the multistream, so i imgine that why they are partering with obs, so they can have at least one piece of software capable. the hardware can do it for sure, nvidia cards have been updated trough drivers to been able to encode more than one stream of video

I just used the multiple streaming plugin for OBS and I streamed monster hunter rise to three separate services, YT, kick and twitch with different bandit each service 6mb to kick and twitch and 12mb to YT and my 3070 ti handled it without any hiccups. I guess newer cards will be just fine with 3-5 transcodes.
