New Adobe Captivate: First Impressions

FINALLY, the new version of Adobe Captivate is here! Was it worth the wait? Here are my first impressions so far.

Hey adobe if you're reading this, the captivate videos on your site will not run properly so i came to KZfaq. This is the first video i saw. Thank you for saving me money, Jeff. As someone who has had their heart broken REPEATEDLY by premiere, i will wait til they fix this basic shit

Hi, Jeff what is the sepecific diffrence between Captivate and Storyline and which would you recommend for beginner in I.D?

Hello! Here is a video where I compared them side by side: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndV0nL2ZyZPXhIk.html It is a little older but I think it will still give you a good idea, especially given the fact that right now both versions of Captivate still need to be used. Generally speaking, I find Storyline is easier to learn and get started in. However, if price is part of the equation, Captivate is a LOT more affordable.

Is the issue with Powerpoint import due to the heavy use of templates and the inability to port PP slides onto such restricted templates. Seems like a deal breaker for many. As someone deciding between Articulate and Captivate at the moment this will really affect my decision.

Great question! Supposedly, that functionality will be added at some point but who knows when. My take is that with the new version, they really want to encourage creating from within Captivate vs. doing an import. I can appreciate that but there are many who have legacy courses built in PowerPoint or who use PPT to storyboard so it does seem like a miss on their part to not have that figured out before releasing.

Thx. I was looking forward to the new version but now I'm looking at alternative products. It looks like the product manager needs to be replaced.

It TOTALLY feels 1/2 baked and kinda squishy in the center. 😂 There are some pretty cool things you can do with it if you're willing to settle for exactly what they tell you to do. It's like they said 🖕 to developers and designers who actually know what they're doing and said, "we're gonna make this for ID wannabes who don't know WTF they're doing! So if you're OK with having very little control over your designs and layouts, then by all means, give it a test drive. Otherwise, just stick with the clunky'ole Captivate 2019 for now - where you can still at least make a smart shape or place an image exactly where you want it. 🙄

LOL "kinda squishy in the center" I don't like to give them too much grief as I know there are a lot of talented people who really do care and are trying to make something good. I was, however, more than a bit surprised that it took so long and then we were told, like you mention "oh, yeah, just keep on using the old version if you want to do x y or z!"

Because I am an existing Adobe user the new version looks like existing Adobe software. I look forward to starting with the new version of Adobe Captivate and creating new e-learning projects.

Yep. Captivate 2023 is a teaching tool for the kind of people who don't know how to fix problems themselves. It's just a collection of preset templates that do not allow for complexity - particularly in regards to the simulations.

I'm not necessarily against preset templates that can help my workflow go faster. I like some of what they are trying to do but just wish it had come out complete instead of making us have to keep using the old one.

I tried the new Captivate today and I am so disappointed! This feels like a completely different tool. I couldn’t do half of the things I wanted. I’m going back to the 2019 version.

Six months in and... Nothing has changed. Paul is trying to be their saving grace but he has to work in their confines, as we all do now. Its not a good product. I shouldn't have to use both, and unlearn so much to try and understand the new.

That's disappointing to hear. I haven't really been keeping up. I let my Captivate subscription expire and not sure if/when I'll go back to it. I didn't think the new version was all bad necessarily. I liked some of the updates and cleaner look. But, the whole thing with having to use both and the incompatibility with older projects....ugh.
