In this episode, Jay Pierson unboxes and mounts the new CNC Robot: Universal Robots UR10e. Does the new control throw him off?

Four years ago I jumped into into automation when I purchased my first Universal Robots UR10. I have to be honest with you, it was a little more than I could handle. I sold it and bought other equipment that I needed at the time but I KNEW I would come back to it. Today is the day I unbox my new CNC robot: Universal Robots UR10e

This is possibly the first time I've seen a semi-normal everyday shop manager actually SHOW an unboxing and setup. Keep this up. I'll likely never need one of these but it's absolutely fascinating to see how far this has come. Incredible how easy it is to put in a robot arm to handle mundane movement of heavy objects. I had NO IDEA we had reached the point you can "unlock" and just move the axis by hand "intelligently" and possibly teach it. Fascinating.

Those are excellent robots. Got 2 of those at my work, doing all the boring stuff, at the brake press... literally 1000's of workpieces everyday. Suddenly got time for at the fun prototyping work. You're gonna love it :) And the new UI.. Sweet :)

Those robots are so easy to use, I have installed about 14 of them now, some of them running mills, some lathes, one even does flatbed printing. I write URCaps for them, and also do customer training and support. Fun stuff :)

Great video, Jay. Are you going to add vision to your setup? We're in the early planning stages of a new cell with vision to locate loose blanks from a conveyor and to read 2D barcodes. The idea is to create a virtual self-contained "job shop" for high mix parts like soft jaws. It should be easy enough to use where office staff can get parts made to fulfill an order without interrupting regular production machines and staff.

I got my hands on an older verson of this robot at a makers-space, and it took me 30 min of testing to make a program that moved a lego brick from A to B to C and back to A in a loop. I have never used any equipment like this before, so i was suprised of how easy it was. :D Good luck!

Why do you not mounted it over the working area to hang down? So you could use more place in front of the machine.

That's going to be great fun! I'm guessing you can "program" it as well by manually moving the arms to desired positions, and it repeats the action? BTW I like the yellow card system you have for keeping track of tooling! Do you have a video on it anywhere?

Make sure your grab the latest Polyscope version. It's almost always worth using the latest version (5.3.1 as of this writing). new features are being added all the time and should be compatible with your existing program. All the major UR+ suppliers do a good job making sure their URCaps are compatible. As for what's in the joints, there's a servo motor tied to a Harmonic Drives zero backlash gearhead, a front encoder, and rear encoder. The collaborative nature uses the motor current as well as the dual encoders to determine if there is a collision with an object or person. The new e-series has a number of improvements, here are some of them: 1. Higher resolution widescreen pendant with single smaller cable. 2. Better repeatability over older CB series. 3. Built-in force torque transducer from Robotiq in the tool flange. 4. Additional I/O for dual conveyor tracking. 5. The tool port now has RS485 capability allowing grippers and other devices like the Robotiq models to run right off the tool port with no cable running down the arm. 6. Higher encoder reliability (more immune to dust). 7. Faster joint changeout if needed. 8. Four times faster processor. That covers most of it.

@jackflash6377

Break even is much faster than you think. We've been studying the UR-5 for our production and it will pay for itself in about 14 months (very conservative estimate by the way). The UR-10 is only slightly more expensive at around $55,000 They are so versatile. We will be mounting ours on a mobile base so we can swap between machines. We literally had the demo unit picking up a pencil and placing it in a tray within 5 minutes of taking the controls. Amazing.

Automation is the answer, the operator is supposed to be a robot not a human, they tried to get me to do operator work for over ten years so I built a auto loader instead, I put so many damn airplane engine parts in the sky and I have never been on an airplane, worked on CNC for almost 20 years, and fast food before that, impressive fast food is, now the machine has a virus.

Well, used ones on EBay are going from USD $35k-45k. I think brand-new they're $45-50k, but that can vary some depending on which model you buy, and what options. The gripper/tooling, mounting stand, etc, will all be separate or DIY.

how much did the robot cost ? coz here in australia you would have to pay minimum $30k in safety equipment before you could operate the robot and i believe that RIA (robotic industry association) has put even more regulations on robot use and safety. one of the many reasons manufacturing is dead in australia .
@mathieubelanger-barrette1647
@mathieubelanger-barrette1647 5 жыл бұрын
You should look into collaborative robots (Universal Robots for example). There isn't any additionnal safety devices needed. If you want to learn more about safety with cobot you want to look into ISO15066.
@firehawkdelta
@firehawkdelta 5 жыл бұрын
URs are (or can operate as) "collaborative" robots, that need no additional safety hardware or sensors. The tradeoff is strict limits on payload and speed. But for any RIA-spec'd "cobot", it's essentially impossible to be *seriously* harmed by it, even if you try -- about the only serious health risk would be getting your eye poked out, so safety glasses are still a good idea! :)
