Colonel's Review of Trooping The Colour 2024.
Hadn't planned on seeing this but there were plenty of tickets left and it looked like the weather was going to be a bit better than last week.
Was still a bit breezy though but there was not the outside influences that marred the Major General's Review for me.
Managed to get a seat that mirrored last weeks position which gave a different perspective to the video.
With the Princess of Wales unable to carry out the duty of Inspecting officer she was replaced by Lieutenant General Sir James Bucknall.

The new compositions, Earl Alexander of Tunis and The Ballyragget sound better with each hearing. A march named for Field Marshall Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, seems long in coming, considering the stature he attained in WWII and his distinguished affiliation with the Irish Guards through two world wars. He was believed to be Churchill's favourite general. The Ballyragget cleverly conveys, in my listening, the David and Goliath struggle that saw Lt. John Gorman and his 2B IG tank crew in The Ballyragget, a modest Sherman, ram and knock out a German Tiger II, the largest and heaviest operational tank of its day, before its big gun could be brought to bear on the situation- derring do during the Normandy Campaign that brought Gorman a Military Cross. Mr.Baton's vantage point for this second and final dress rehearsal for the King's Birthday Parade 2024 had an interesting visual immediacy to it that was quite enjoyable. Thanks Mr. Baton. You're a trooper!

From 53:05 you can see the results of a lesser-known tradition. The Escort fixes out of place bayonet scabbards when they troop their Colour through the ranks. If you watch closely (e.g. some of the Welsh Guardsmen in No 4 Guard) everything is in good order again after the Escort has passed ;)
@wu_1116
@wu_1116 Ай бұрын
@@zephyr755 Before the parade starts, all Guards on parade fix bayonets. When they do this, often their bayonet scabbards get tangled up. Before the march past begins, the Escort sorts that out while parading the Colour through the ranks. If you watch closely, some Guardsmen have their bayonet scabbards not perfectly pointing downwards from their belts before the Escort reaches them, but then everything is fine when the Escort has passed them.

There will be The King, The Queen Consort, The Royal Colonels - Prince of Wales, The Princess Royals & The Duke of Edinburgh taking Part in The Trooping the Colour Parade. It's been made quite Clear the Princess of Wales will not be attending any Public Duties until Much Later in the Year at the very Least. Treatment in the form of Chemotherapy not only Saps one's Strength, it also Alters the Physical Appearance to one degree or another. Extreme loss of weight, loss of hair, colour & texture of the Skin are just some of the Common ones. It also lowers the Immune System to such an extent, they are susceptible to Infection & are at High Risk of Contacting Viral Conditions like the Common Cold or the Flu. It would be the Height of Stupidity for her to Appear in Public, regardless of how strong she Felt.

Hello, There are always Shouted Orders at this Parade, it's how the Troops know where to go & what to do. I think in the main it's not as obvious during the Actual Trooping of The Colour Parade. This is the Final & Full Dress Rehearsal & is also in a New Format for the First Time, so there may well be a bit of Tweaking going on. Also this Video was filmed much Closer to the "Action" than most usually are, so may well be picking up the Sound Louder & Clearer. In the Past when each of the 5 Bands have arrived, they've had Companies of the Foot Guards Marching behind each one, which worked quite Smoothly as each Company was Marched into place. You wouldn't have noticed the Shouted Commands because the Band was Still playing as the Marched onto the Parade Ground & took their place & that happened with each Band. At the end of that, all the Companies of Foot Guards were in place & waiting for the Arrival of the Carriage Procession, so no more Shouted orders until I think it was #3 & #4 Company Opened to allow the Carriages through. The Officer on Horseback in Overall Command is the "Field Officer in Brigade Waiting (FOBW)" he usually takes position near the end of #4 Company & issues Orders from Horseback very loudly so all can hear. There are 6 Companies over all & they are spread in a 4 & 2 Configuration as a Long L Shape. This is a Nod to the Famous "Hollow Square" that the Infantry Regiments used to Form to Defend against Enemy Cavalry Attack. The Companies are all called Guards & are addressed as #1 Guard - #6 Guard by the FOBW when giving Orders. The Officers of the Assembled Guards do give the Orders to the men but with the Shuffling & Stamping of Feet, they aren't really noticed & ofcourse when they're Forming up for the March Past it's only 1 or 2 Voices competing with the Music being played by the Massed Bands. This New Format actually removes a lot of Sound. It's not just the way the Guard Company arrive & get into place or the Bands not playing to mask all the Orders, they are now forming up much closer to the Saluting Platform than they used to. That has the effect of making the Orders Given & carried out much closer to the Spectators than it was, so that Noise becomes more Noticeable. One thing the Organisers had not taken into consideration is the Intelligence of Horses. At the previous Rehearsal, the Major General's Review, I was quite amused to see one of the very Large Drum Horses, Major "Perseus" a very Experienced Trooping the Colour Veteran - did you know the 2 Drum Horses of the Mounted Band of the Household Cavalry actually carry the Rank of Major? - knew he was out of position & kept trying to Reverse over the Band to get to where he knew he always Stood! He wasn't the only one & many of the Horses were skittery & Unsettled. There are actually 1 or 2 Channels who reported & showed several Horses Bolting or trying to Bolt. The Cavalry Troopers managed to control their Charges as you would expect with 1 or 2 exceptions, but that's no different to normal, there's always 1 or 2 Rider less Horses returning after their Trot Past, unfortunately the Senior Officers, many of whom get a few weeks training on Riding Horses, aren't quite as well able to Control a Fidgety Horse, who knows the Drill far better than their Rider. Never mind, a few Bumps & Bruised Egos was all the damage Done. This new Format of the 2 Senior Bands, The Band of The Grenadier Guards & The Band of the Coldstream Guards arriving alone & the Mini Massed Bands Arriving together with all 6 Guard Companies, who were all still being Marched into Position when the Bands had Stopped Playing, had nothing to cover the Sound of the SM & NCOs Shouted Orders. All these things served to make a lot more of the Shouting far more obvious than it was used to be. I understand the Main reason for this new Format was in response to Last years Parade, when an unusually Hot Conditions during the Colonel's Review Rehearsals had Guardsmen, Guards Officers, Bandsmen, Cavalrymen & Senior Officers Mounted on Horses, Fainting & Collapsing from Heat Exhaustion & Sun Stroke. No matter what the Weather or Conditions, there have always been the odd Fainting Participant but last Year was the Worst many people could remember & the Public Outcry left the Organisers with no option but to address it. I've seen Comments & Opinions both for & against this particular Change & it seems as many like it as don't, but there are unforeseen things this Format has shown. One of which is the far more Noticeable Shouting & Commands. They were always there, but because of how the Parade was Scripted, they were masked by other things & were spread out more, now they are all many voices at the same time, giving a far greater Volume. If they decide to keep this Format going Forward, I daresay there will be a lot of Tweaking as everyone gets used to it & in a few years this will be the New Norm. Have a Great Week.

There is one thing that Puzzles me, The First Band to Arrive was The Band of The Grenadier Guards led by DM Stu Laing, which is Right & Proper as they are the Most Senior Foot Guards Regiment in the Household Division. The Second Band is The Band of the Coldstream Guards, led by ASDM Scott Fitzgerald, fair enough, they're obviously Following the Order of Seniority. However, why is The Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums Marching with The Band of the Coldstream Guards? It has been Pointed out to me quite Forcibly by Multiple People in the Last Month, that Corps of Drums & Pipes & Drums of The Household Division, always March behind their own Regiment's Band. I know that's not Strictly True, but am disinclined to enter into Argument with People who should know far better than I. So why aren't the Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums Marching behind the Band of the Grenadier Guards? Furthermore, the Most Commonly seen Corps of Drums are those of The Welsh Guards & they aren't on Parade! There is also the Point that I was told that last Year's Parade did not have Pipes & Drums because The Trooping Regiment, The Welsh Guards did not have Pipes & Drums, so there were No Pipes & Drums. They did have a Corps of Drums, so all Regiments with a Corps of Drums had them on Parade. I was further told that the Only 2 Regiments without a Corps of Drums, The Scots Guards & The Irish Guards, had Pipes & Drums, if either Regiment was Trooping their Colour, there would only be Pipes & Drums, because they don't have Corps of Drums, no Corps of Drums would be Paraded. Confused? Well so am I! I'm not Stupid enough to think that things don't Change from time to time, but all the Information was repeated to me in the Last Month & some of the People Concerned should know, they are Currently Serving in The Household Division or Family Members. Any Body have any Idea?

The Romans used Bugles & other horns long before drums were even a thing. No Roman monuments depict drums with the Roman Armies, but Tubular wind instruments are commonly shown. These have a much more distinctive, & penetrating sound than drums, & can be used to send complicated signals, to be heard over long distances. Drums only seem to appear, in western armies at least, sometime after the Crusades, & only become common in the post medieval era. They were possibly used by Turkish & other eastern forces much earlier than this, with western armies adopting them after conflict with these. The Bugle soon returned to dominate battlefield signalling, as the drum could not compete with cannon, so became relegated to a more ceremonial role, in drill, marches & parades.

It's unfair to Compare this Final Dress Rehearsal with an Actual Parade. Plus this is the First Time of a New Format, it's bound to be a bit Glitchy. The Standards & Requirements of Guards today is very different from 10 years ago. The Fact they've lowered the Height Restrictions means you have 5ft tall Guardsmen in the Ranks with 6ft + Guardsmen & straight away the Whole Company looks Messy, up & down like a City Skyline. Then there's the Dressing, the Length of Arms, Legs & Paces on a 5ft Person is very different to that of someone 6ft & it's amazing how often a Shorty has to put in a Skip/Jump to keep up. If you have the time, take a Look at the Coronation Rehearsals from last Year, you will be Stunned at how often it was Required to keep some semblance of Rank Dressing. No matter how Good or Skilled a Drill Sergeant is, he can't change Physical Stature or make a Silk Purse out of a Sow's Ear.

That's Possibly due to the Fact that The Royals hold Honorary Senior Officer Posts in the Commonwealth Armed Services. Canada, Australia & New Zealand have Charles lll, Princess Royal Anne, Prince Edward Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William The Prince of Wales, Prince Richard Duke of Gloucester & Prince Edward Duke of Kent as both Honorary or Actual Head of the 3 Branches of their Armed Services. The very 1st Medal from left to Right on Charles lll is a New Zealand One. He is the only current Admiral of the Fleet, Field Marshal and Marshal of the RNZAF, the Highest Rank NZ has. He Wears all his Decorations on his NZ Army, Navy & Airforce Uniforms & as New Zealand is a Commonwealth Realm, The Jubilee Medals from HM Queen Elizabeth ll's Reign also make up the "Salad Bar" of Medals worn by NZ Armed Forces on Ceremonial Occasions & ANZAC Day, the Official Memorial Day in NZ & Australia. Like the UK, Charles lll is also The Head of all NZ Armed Forces. Charles lll, Anne The Princess Royal & William The Prince of Wales also hold The Order of New Zealand, the Highest Honour in The New Zealand Royal Honours which also has a Medal. This Order is only Less than The Order of The Garter, The Order of the Thistle & The Order of Merit, each of which is Awarded by the Sovereign by Request.
