New Family Tree Maker 2019 Coming this Summer with some NICE new features!

Family tree maker has long been a part of my genealogy toolkit. I have owned and used every verion of FTM produced! I love the prodcut and still use it today!
MacKiev has announced a new version (which was avaiable recently for pre-order) FTM 2019 which is scheduled for release this summer!
Some features are very nice! So nice I may have to actually subscribe to their TreeVault service!

I hope they fix the issue with group sheets having a blank back, if you use a special background and you have an odd number of pages.

On the color coding, the new part is the check boxes below 2 of the selections, which includes ancestors descendants. That could be powerful.

+Kim X my version of 2017 allows that now or am I missing something? What do you mean check boxes ? I can colorize descendants now does it do it differently and if so how? If seem to be misunderstanding or my version already has the feature

@@DNAFamilyTrees On your video at 6:56 there are check boxes right below "All Ancestors (1 color)" and "All Ancestors (4 colors)" that say "include ancestor's descendants". I would imagine that if you chose for example your mother and "All Ancestors (1 color)" and checked the box all ancestors descendants, then all your mother's 1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins etc are also color coded. I could have used this for a forensic genealogy project that I worked on last year.

@@IowaKim It is possible in the current version. After you color your ancestors, go to the furthest back ones and add color for their descendents in the same color. It's a bit of a pain to setup and keep updated, so this feature change is much appreciated.

Not a fan of Family Search, havent found it to be very consistent and also its integration with applications like MacFamilyTree 8.5 is really painful to use, constant duplicates and such. I ended up turning it off/disconnecting family search because it caused too many problems. Looking forward to trying FTM 19' as well for the ease of sharing the licensing to collaborate with other family members on the effort.

yeah family search having a singular tree does complicate things alot. Especially with the one bad entry that gets propagated. You can correct it but then people just put it back without looking at the note as to the correction. I have one in my line who people keep adding a 78yr old mother at time of birth. Once person added it, 100s copied it, now everyone "fixes" the tree every time it gets updated. Seriously gave birth at 78? Died at 78? Childbirth? come on folks read the data LOL but it does have some good tools tool but not via the FTM, but through their website links

Im just a beginner and was recommend Family Tree Maker. Your review was helpful. I'm not very techie but could you not back up all the information on a UBS stick rather then paying for the cloud for backup?

yes you could. f that usb is in your house when a fire, tornado or other thing happen, bothyour comptuer and usb are in the same place. I keep data in cloud and local. i have my data on comptuer, external drive and in cloud. :) also cloud makes easier to share :) i wish they would release the 2019 version they said summer, thats past so time for it to come out soon

I'm trying to keep an old HP computer working because I like FTM Version 11, better than any of the others. Was hoping the latest version would be better for my Mac computer. Sure don't like the version I'm using on Mac now.

I've paid for the new version for my Mac which was suppose to come out this summer. Summer is about over and I still haven't received it.

I am working on my wife's family tree on Ancestry as an editor - and using your numerous and fantastic hints, especially on color coding and thrulines!! I also use Family Tree Maker. I can sync my trees between the two with no problem. But since my wife's tree is a Trees Shared With Me, though I can work with it on Ancestry (both Tree and DNA) I have been unable to upload it from Ancestry into my Family Tree Maker trees as it only browses through my own trees. Is there a way to do that so that I could sync to her tree on Ancestry with a Family Tree Maker tree?

Not sure i completely understand but if you have her tree local you can change active tree in FTM and sync. If it is already on ancestry i know you can download the ged and synce that. I have multipe trees synced at any given point. Now if her's i already on ancstry though i may need to look or get with the FTM folks on how to sync it without having one local first, i have never done that. s is her tree local to her computer were you can back it up with ftm? or only onancestry as a share?

have you tried syncing even though not green? i have done it at yellow and orange, just slower.

look at the color coding again - you can now add the descendants when coloring for ancestor we need more colors - lots more colors - 8 colors is NOT enough

+Lewis Buttery I can do that with my current version of 2017. Just tested to make sure worked I don’t see anything new in coloring that’s not already in 2017?

I preordered the update, but not sure how much of it I'll use. I'm still bummed with Sync. One of my trees lost Sync with Ancestry. I had to re-upload it. Now I have two trees with the same name. The latest will sync, but has no attachments. I wish they had a way of re-syncing without uploading a duplicate tree. In other words, fix the present version before adding new features.

+joseph mayer I have same thing! I thought just me With ftm the sources weren’t syncing on second tree I bet it’s prelude to this new version

should be. Family tree maker is a local computer program. And it does sync with ancestry and family search so i dont see any reason it wouldnt work

technically summer runs til September 22, so guess they are taking the full "summer" lol yeah i am ready for it to come out too!

For you, no. It does integrate with ancestry and family search to give you the hint leaves and box icons The only method I know to do for you is a paid researcher

Tree Vault can only do ONE tree - I have many trees - so I don't see much value using Tree Vault ?

+Lewis Buttery I think the next of kin feature and cloud backup if it keeps images too will be good Saving offsite important The app features will be interesting to see if they add value Almanac info nice if your in the family story stage For $20 a year I’ll see what it’s like and do video in pros and cons 🤓

Question: Will FTM integrate with www.ancestrylibrary.com? If I am not an ACOM paid subscriber and I take my laptop to my local library to use their portal (ancestrylibrary.com) to the ACOM databases and public trees, will FTM allow me to merge profiles and/or branches from public trees into mine? What about adding ACOM sources to my tree profiles?

I dont know, i have never tried it. wouldnt that require FTM to be on a library computer? are you asking for a library?

@@DNAFamilyTrees No, at my local library (either municipal or county), if I connect my laptop to the library's public Wi-Fi, I can then access the Ancestry Library Edition service. It is a subscribed service offered by many public libraries to their patrons.

@@DNAFamilyTrees Also, due to our municipal libraries being closed (due to COVID-19), they have TEMPORARILY made the Ancestry Library Edition service available from home using the library's website (as well as Fold3 and Newspapers.com). However, to access it, you must have an active library card. One uses they card to login first then access the service. Currently, that feature is set to be discontinued at the end of calendar 2020. My personal opinion is they will probably extend it into 2021 until the physical libraries are reopened.
