Just a quick video of the new front axle and anti roll bar setup on the Fox Body Mustang Hot Rod Build.
Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

I learned from a ford nine inch builder, in simplest way to explain the lifting of the front of the car, the driveshaft input causes the pinion to try to climb up the ring gear if the tire traction is close to 100% grip. It's kinda like if you get a toy pullback car, pull it back, and hold the rear axle tight between your thumb and finger, it tries to do a 'triple/quadruple & more' of a wheelie flipping in your hand. Sorry for the dragged out explanation, but as you have taught me a lot of info with actual visualization, I wanted to add in a little bit. Thanks for everything you show us on your channel.

I have been wondering why more people don't do hot rod type builds on more modern vehicles as well. Then I found your channel and started watching this build. great stuff. I have a build in mind and hope to start in the coming months here. Don't have the experience or all the tools you do but I'm hoping I can make it work.

I love this build more and more. Rat rods and hot rods rarely have the right suspension geometry or optimum travel. When we drive them, we feel the “wrong” and laugh at it, because rat rods and hot rods are about getting away with something that you’re not supposed to. I think people are confused Kyle because your work looks so beautiful they expect that it should handle like a race chassis, forgetting that this is about experiencing and driving something that says “I was built”. This will be fun and cool to drive, bump steer or not, rough ride or not. Can’t wait to see it run!!! (And I’m sure it will do a donut, burnout, or even a drag run or two regardless). Keep truckin ‘

Not many know what the term "ackerman" is,,, you might be the first fabricator I've heard use it!!! >> [the arc described by the steered wheel on the outside of the car, is of a larger radius than that on the inside]

ackerman is the steering angle relationship to the centerline of the chassis. there is also instant center. toe in on turns. caster. camber. toe in. thrust line. steering axis inclination. toe out on turns. etc etc etc.. its actually kinda fun building this shit.

Interesting naming. What you call a “heim” joint we call a rose joint. In this part of the world a heim is the S shaper bit that goes on the side of the hood ( the proper hood, not the bit at the front) to help if fold better.

On the machinist channel Abom79 you can see a dynamic example of an arm working in conjunction with a cam. It is in the video titled G&E Shaper New Oil and Run at minute 17:45. Such a design could work on adjustable suspensions.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
thats pretty cool...not sure how your suggesting I tie that to adjustable suspension though
@kevinhornbuckle
@kevinhornbuckle 6 жыл бұрын
+The Fab Forums I'm not suggesting it for you. What you've set up in the rear looks pretty effective. I just thought that the dynamic modeling might stimulate an eventual suspension design. A guy in New Zealand a few years ago invented a drop deck trailer suspension using a cam'd arm and air bag. It could work on a drive axle too if the geometry were dialed in properly.

Hey Kyle, thanks for the explanation about the Heims. But, the heim is going to do more of a twisting because the rod is in line with the pivot point. This might mean that it will have less articulation than you’re hoping for. It’s not going to go up and down like you showed because it’s pointing toward the front of the car. Just thought I’d point that out. Have a nice day!
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
Its not going to be pointing towards the front of the car...its going to the bottom of the spindle to complete the A arm
@tommyjay4770
@tommyjay4770 6 жыл бұрын
The Fab Forums Ah okay, I think I understand what you’re saying. I thought you were shooting the rear tube of the arm forward and then bending it to run parallel with the front tube of the arm before getting to the spindle, but you’re going to make to make it straight literally like the shape of a letter A.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
well it wont be straight probably have like a 30 degree bend in it.

Arb comment use 3/4 .120 wall as a gusset from ur link to the main tube and wrap ur links with flat straps and tug weld( leave room for hiem travel of course) then you don’t have to worry about disconnecting and reconnecting that link) would like to see that in the build for safety and durability.

I’m liking the build, but I’m not sure about the longevity of the front heims being mounted horizontally instead of vertically. Over some time the Teflon will wear and there’s potential for the inner ball to come out of its socket. Where as vertically the ball can not be accidentally removed under wear. Just trying to avoid a pucker moment during a long cruise lol I’ve had a similar issue is all.

front wheel drive cars usually have the rack behind the hubs , there usually mounted high up the firewall with the steering stuck straight intoo it about the bolts holding the front of the a arms , did you think about a wheel hitting a pothole , ... i would add a few extra point closer to the heim joints , maibe you can put a longer bolt through the heimjoint and bolt those intoo the frame , whont be too conspicuous think the t5 is good enough , it will sooner spin the tires then twist anything in the trans

I was wondering if you have to do something out of the ordinary with the drive shaft slip yoke to account for the extended travel of the rear end due ti the hydraulic setup you are installing. Do you have to use a 2 piece drive shaft like the off roaders do for rock crawlers and buggies?

Still thinking the rack is placed a bit high compared to the lower control arm to not create bump steer. But we'll see when the knuckles comes I guess

Why not just use stock spindles on opposite sides? I'd assume everything but the tie rod hole is pretty much the same.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
+lilsammywasapunkrock several reasons. the spindles lay the struts back some for proper caster. switching would lean them forward. plus tge ackerman wouldnt be correct.

Hey kyle love the content first off!! Keep it up...and i wanted to ask u.. i noticed that u have a lot of stick out on ur tig torch.. is that cause of the big cup u have on there or is that just ur preference to have a lot of stick out? Cant wait to see the stangrod done.

The Fab Forums I think instead of using the struts in a vertical orientation you should keep the cantilever theme of the rod and install them in the front going from left to right. And as far as steering have you thought about using a hydraulic ram for your steering.

i think youre gonna have issues with that "anti-rollbar" any articulation in your rear end is either going to brake the bar or twist it then it wont twist back. A torsion type sway bar would fix your issue.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
lol...its made to handle those exact things.
@kotart98
@kotart98 6 жыл бұрын
the rollbar is not what I would worry about the mount to the frame is the weak link. I have put rollbars like this on prostreet cars and trucks and they last for a wile until one of two things happen the bolts brake in the mount, or the tab that is welded too the bushing tube is ripped off. I have even welded thicker tabs to the tubes and that didn't last much better so I quit using that kind of kit for a street car.
@TheMetalLab
@TheMetalLab 6 жыл бұрын
tom schisler I agree. On a car that only drives straight it would work perfect but articulation is going to tear it apart. But who the hell am I to give suggestions.

why not do an upper a-arm for the front like the lowers and then go the 4x4 route and use a sprung bar for your spring rather then having springs and shocks up in everyone's face you could hide the spring and even the shock by taking it from the lower a-arm tire point to the upper a-arm frame side and using stiffer shocks?
@nyxkeres8597

Heck you could even use a half a leaf spring behind your arm bolted to the tube chassis..
