.
. See all the equipment we put on the airplane, and inquire about your own project! newviewtech.com/aoa/ The journey north to Alaska continues in our Cessna 172. I just flew in IMC, IFR with the new avionics from Garmin and others, all the way to Minneapolis. Now, we are flying IMC at times to Bismarck, North Dakota.
Along the way I'll be putting on my flight instructor hat, and teaching my co-pilot Daniel about the new avionics. Namely, there's lots of new things to know about the Garmin GI275 attitude indicator, HSI and engine monitor. And, the system also works closely with the Garmin GNX375 GPS Navigator.
Daniel flew down from Alaska, and he's pretty tired. While we are flying back to Alaska during warmer months, density altitude will become an issue. Our takeoff out of Flying Cloud in MN is pretty sporty. But, we stay patient and keep flying the airplane.
Our little Cessna 172 has gone through so much the last few months, and it's really incredible to see this new instrument panel and transformation. The avionics are so easy to use, and nice to look at. It makes the job as a pilot that much easier.
As we approach our destination, we talk a lot more about instrument flying, approach plates, using ForeFlight, keeping a good instrument scan, and so on.
We end up doing the ILS into Bismarck, and even get into IMC, instrument meteorological conditions. That means we're flying in the clouds.
Come along and fly with us on this great adventure to Alaska.

The panel will be fitted with a handful of awesome tools. Here's a list:
-- Garmin GI275 Attitude Indicator
-- Garmin GI275 Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI)
-- Garmin GI275 Engine Indication System (EIS)
-- More 6 Pack Instruments
-- PS Engineering PAR200B Audio Panel
-- Garmin GNX375 WAAS GPS Transponder
-- Garmin GNC255 NAV/COMM
-- New Engine Controls from McFarlane
-- New ARTEX ELT
-- Garmin USB Ports
-- Various Design Elements and Switches
-- Last but not least, an iPad mount from Pivot Cases so we can have ForeFlight

I work for a little shop in VA, OnWing LLC, and it's crazy some of the avionics we've installed. These pilots get these massive projects installed in their aircraft and they literally have to re learn how to fly lol. Like we installed a G3X and GTN750 into a nation last year and guy is still learning new features on it.

Love the videos. In the future as you do more IFR training, I would love to see close up shots of the Gauges as you fly approaches, so we can get a view of what the pilot see's on the instruments during the approach. Our 182M just got this exact same setup with the two 275's and the 355. I haven't started my Instrument journey yet, so watching your videos will help me familiarize with the gauges and how you interact with them during your flights. Keep them coming!

Love this video. Sitting here getting giddy at the moment as my plane is currently in the avionics shop getting a very similar setup to yours. This video not only got me excited for flying with those avionics but also gave me some info on how I should expect to fly with them!! That synthetic vision view of the runway is such a cool feature for extra situational awareness.

First off I love how you imposed the instrument you were adjusting inserting it off to the side so that all of us could see what you were talking about. Very well done. It helps Real Time pilots and Flight Sim pilots as well. Being I am 80yrs old I have moved into the "FltSim" category. I haven't even finished watching the whole video as I write this. @@angleofattack Honestly I think I have only scratched the surface with the GTN and the GI275 as an MFD... and I have onlly really been using it as a CDI/HSI so far coupled with the GTN. Once I have them as PFD/HSI combo and as EIS then it will be different level, I love seeing how you formed your panel, exactly what I have in mind for my 1969 Arrow, I just want to keep that retro look but have the capabilities of a modern ship... I cannot wait, but unfortunately I have to as lead times are 6 months here in the UK for Garmin gear.

Actually, it steps from a problem with the left flap. At one point the plane had an accident and that flap is kinda jammed in the up position, with a slightly higher angle of attack on that side. So it creates lift we have to compensate for to the left.

I fly 172 as well and shoot many approaches. There is always an argument when it comes to flaps. Some folks do it as exactly how you done it in this video. Slow down and get some flaps in as you intercept the glideslope and fly 80kt until final. Other folks, including myself, fly the approach with no flaps, then put the flaps in on final. For a plane like 172, either way works IMO. What your thoughts on this Chris?

@@angleofattack thanks for your answer. I thought this too, because they are the same Garmins. To me, I think it would be nice to have a back up in front of me on the right seat. I know, they are not cheap, and the investment was already huge. Well I think it’s ok like it is, if you are comfortable with it. Nice cockpit anyway.

On the IFR decent, did you use minimum altitudes specified from the plate, programmed into vertical nav or, just keep an eye on the PFD altitude tape at crossing waypoints? 🐝💨. 🦉
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
First, vectored altitudes. Then, charted.

How does Fore Flight get near-real time weather info? Is there a SiriusXM subscription for weather or are you using cellular data for weather?
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
ADS-B is basically free cellular data from the FAA. It beings in weather and traffic.

Why are the new gauges blinking so much?
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
It's a shutter speed issue on the camera, vs the refresh rate on the gauges. It doesn't flash in real life.
