3:50 The Nest Thermostat E works with temperature sensors 👍 And I know you didn't really mention it because of it not being available to the public but it kinda still is. They still have loads for sale at walmart and even at cheaper prices on ebay. I got mine for about $118 and I love it I don't know why they're discontinuing the Nest E. It works great and is a good mix between premium and budget.

As a certified HVAC tech; anything but nest. If you get a good one okay great, personally i love the design and interface. However, about 50% of the Nest thermostats we have installed have needed replacing within the first year. 1/10 are defective straight out of the box. Nothing is 100% I know, but my company highly reccomends away from nest due to all of the problems weve had with them. Significantly less out of ecobee or honeywell smart thermostats.

Have you noticed with the Nest the temperature allowances vary by 3-4 degrees C? This means that if you set it to 20 degrees it might not kick in till it hits 17 or 16 degrees. Nest says this is by design and don't consider it a problem. I am swapping it out or an Ecobee as 4 degrees is the difference between comfortable and cold. Be interesting to see if you have noticed that on your units?

Thank you for all the details. I had the same issue with my nest app when I setup my nest locks a while back. Nest support said that since my home was from the original pre-release nest thermostat it could not support some new devices. I had to create a new home and migrate all 15 of my existing nest devices over. that was a pain, but over a year later I finally finished it when I replaced my expired Nest Protects.

Great review Reed! I've had two V2 Ecobees and four additional sensors for a year and a half. I really like them and definitely notice a difference in the comfort of our home. I have a two year option at BB to upgrade to the "latest" version which I think I'm going to do. Just have to pay the difference. On sale that should be minimal. Wouldn't want to do without them now!

If you're interested in the Ecobee 3, keep an eye on Woot. I picked up the Thermostat and 3 remote sensors for under $200 because it was "open box" or refurb. Box arrived with everything and no damage to any of the items. Easy to install and now just waiting to see those sweet sweet metrics come through.

I LOVE my Ecobee - it saved us $1000s by not having to rebuild the A/C upstairs - the builder put the thermostat and air return outside our bedroom so the bedroom and bath are always too cold or too hot! We were able to use the Ecobee remote to send the temps from the bath and bedroom to the thermostat outside the rooms and not use the main thermostat at all! Works great and is just awesome! Thank you Ecobee!!!

My first foray into smart thermostats is with the Nest 2020. $129 + $15 for the saucer plate worked for me. I think for a first time purchaser, going from the old school - normal thermostat, this sub $150 product is a good choice.

Excellent video and you earned a subscriber! I have bad bearings in my heater inducer motor which has brought my attention to how often my gas heater is cycling (wakes me up in the night even). The ability of the Ecobee to set the temperature differential/swing is a game changer and the most important feature to me, second is the ability to schedule run times outside of peak hours. Thank you for sharing.

I haven't used my snow shovel in over 2 years, I don't even know where it is. The few times its snowed it never lasts more than a day. Great info. I love my budget Nest. A few things to add: 1) If you have an older HVAC system, less than efficient conditions (insulation, and ductwork) but actually is compatible with a smart thermo, these new features will not actually be beneficial. 2) The installation on the budget Nest does not require a C Wire where the other 2 do. This is fixable in most cases with a adapter plug, HVAC knowledge, or professional installation, but it's an extra step on the process.

My recommendation is to check with the electric company provider before purchasing any devices. Some companies offer coupons or rebates on thermostats. After performing some research, we received a free Google Nest Thermostat E. Additionally, a $25 gift card due to DYI install. I hope this helps.

I have the budget Nest, and love how the color "Sand" is identical to my walls. I just slapped some paint over the previous holes, and the new thermostat sans face plate looks super sleek. I love it, but do agree w/ the annoying side touch, took a second to get used to. At first, I was trying to twist off my Nest thermostat from the wall. However, I ended just learning to use my phone to control it versus touching it. Plus, there is something nice to be said about being on the john & being able to turn the heat up. Also, syncs perfectly with my Google Home speakers.

@@RJGamer-zb4lb Nest 3rd gen has small wireless temperature sensors that I have in various rooms of my house. It can switch to any of them at any time so I have a schedule set up to use say the kitchen in the morning, living room during the day, and bedroom at night as the target temp. Very handy. Often my bedroom would be a few degrees warmer than the rest of the house but this fixes that.

Removing heat costs a lot more energy than adding heat. Allowing your thermostat to swing multiple degrees so that it “runs less” will cost you more in electricity. Having it maintain 76 degrees will not only keep your house at the temperature you like it to be, but allows the condenser to only have to cycle on to maintain temperature for short periods of time. Instead of turning on, removing an accumulated 2 degrees from your house, shutting down, and allowing the heat to build up again

Something I had never thought about: what is a typical heating/cooling configuration in the US? Because I think that it is totally different than the typical Italian home. Here in Italy, the majority of people have wall radiators (either made of cast iron, aluminum, or steel) that are connected to a furnace. If you live in a house you control the furnace, if you live in an apartment the furnace will be turned on/off on a specific date, for specific hours (you can control your radiators' valves). For cooling, the majority of Italian houses have wall air conditioning units (towards the ceiling). So I control my 4 thermostats with Nest 3, but I guess I won't ever be able to control the cooling as well.

There is a critical difference between the 3rd Gen Nest and the $129 Google Nest. If you have a multi stage heating/cooling system, the $129 Nest will not accommodate the 2nd stage cooling (y2) or 2nd heat (W2) functions of the system. This is especially critical to consider if you have a heat pump system with auxiliary heat or a hybrid system.

@@SmartHomeSolver Our local electric company is selling the new Nest for $30! Couldn’t pass on the opportunity so we purchased one.

I agree Claire. The touch interface would annoy me to no end and I’d end up pulling it off the wall and buying something better so I might as well buy something better in the first place.

I stopped using the Nest App for my 3rd Gen Nest, and just use the Google Home app instead. However if you wanted to change settings you'd still need the Nest App as the settings aren't accessible through Google Home. I use my desktop browser to make advanced changes, however.

In my career I saw lots of Nest Acting funky!!! From not registering user input to shortages on the back plate showing wires on set up that were not even connected!! I haven't tried 3rd Gen but my sentiments are already locked and I'm bias!! Ecobee FTW!!

Hmm. I live in AZ. I have ecobee lite. My biggest gripe is this. We are on a time of use plan for our electric with APS. The hours between 3pm and 8pm are the most expensive. Through the App, my AC was running an average of 50 minutes during that time. I precool till 3 o'clock and I get the house to about 76 degrees. At 3, the app is set to 82 degrees. It will take until about 5:30 before the house gets to 82. Then it cycles until 8pm when I have it set for 78 again. I would rather run it for 10 minutes at the top of each hour. The app for the lite at least has no timer settings just temperature. You can also not set the temp for part of the hour. but rather for that whole hour. My hypothesis is that it would stay around 80 in the house if I could run it for 10 minutes at the top of the hour, and then just repeat that during the peak time periods from APS. Keeping it cool, rather than cooling it after it gets to 82. Having it this summer though has saved me over 100 bucks every month of the summer. My august bill was $137 less than the same month last year. Having a timer option that would do portions of the hour would make the ecobee the best unit ever!

I wonder if you could use something like SmartThings or even a voice assistant routine to run the A/C for ten minutes during peak pricing as a schedule. Then turn it back off or up real high. I save a lot using the peak pricing as well. Pays for the thermostat so fast.
