Honestly, just moving your SD Card from one handheld and placing it into a different system would've been much faster and less painless.

Honestly the fact a process like this is still needed in 2016 is a bit ridiculous....Really need to get with the times Nintendo and start attaching downloads etc to Usernames with an online system instead of to hardware itself. I love my New 3DSXL and 2DS but seriously the transfer process is just stupidly outdated and anti consumer.

Based on what I'd heard, I had concern that the transfer process would give me some difficulty, but it was a relatively painless (and not too lengthy) process to transfer about 8gb of data. That said, it's still way more complicated a setup than it needs to be to simply move my user info and saved files to a new system, and I also think the onscreen instructions could've provided a little more clarity as they walked me through the steps, since I did momentarily fear I might've made a mistake and lost all my data at one point before swapping out the cards.

on step 9 wouldnt wireless transfer be easier?

I wish there was a way to do it via the account only. My 3DS got stolen a while ago, and I lost a bunch of games, plus my Ambassador Program content. :( EDIT: Good news, apparently I can!

I transferred a few hours ago, my heart skipped a beat when the New 3DS XL didn't recognize the Micro SD card the first time around, but thankfully it worked the second time and it all works great now!

Nintendo,you're telling me that you couldn't have a simple 3ds data transfer server,where someone could upload there data,give the old formatted 3ds system to lets say,gamestop to get the discount on the new 3ds,then just download the data on the new 3ds? whats the point of giving us a gamestop discount when we trade in our old system if we need both to tranfer data?

Legit I was thinking about getting a new 3ds xl but now that I know its so hard to file transfer, I am probably not going to get it. I love Nintendo and all but they really have to fix this.

I just did a wireless transfer and played other games and watched shows while I waited. It took a while but it was much less stuff to worry about. I did change the card to a 32 gb one though, so i'll be good for a long time. I upgraded from a normal sized cosmo black 3DS to this one so the change is quite noticeable. I'm loving my New 3DS XL. :D Also if you guys are looking for one and can't find one, I bought mine off of the walmart website. They had both the black and red one in stock so just a thought for you guys who want one but can't find it.

This is useful for digital downloaded games. The wireless transfer will not allow digital game data to be transferred, so doing this option is much better if you have save data on digital games.

Wow. My summer vacation begins with a system transfer because that's when I'm getting the New 3DS XL.

I love you Nintendo, I really do. But what about just a decent account system that prevents all this old-fashioned and unnecessary hassle?

FOR ANYONE HAVING PROBLEMS AFTER STEP #14: While copying the folder from your original 3DS named "Nintendo 3DS" to your New 3DS's Micro SD card, if you decide to merge the two "Nintendo 3DS" folders together (the one from your original 3DS and the one on the New 3DS's Micro SD card), the new system won't be able to recognize your DSi games when you put the Micro SD card back in the New 3DS. If this happens, just put the Micro SD card back in your computer, go into the folder, go into the folder that starts with "bf95," and there should be 2 folders. DO NOT delete the one that starts with "c62800", it has the data you need on it. Instead, delete the other folder, which should be completely empty. Then, when you put the Micro SD card back into the 3DS, the DSi games should transfer over just fine. I had a little scare while doing this but after a little bit of checking, I came to the conclusion that the New 3DS couldn't deal with there being an extra, empty folder in the spot I mentioned above so I deleted it and tried putting the card back in, and it worked. I'm glad that was the problem, or I probably would've lost all of my data and bricked my new system because I wouldn't have been able to get to the menu of my New 3DS.

For those wondering, Pre loaded titles are not transferred, however you can re-download them from the eshop for free!

Does anyone know if the old sd card I'm using, can I switch that with the pre-installed 4gb card? So basically, the old card will be in the new system, and the new card will be in the old system. The card I'm using now is 32gb and I really don't want to buy another 32gb just to transfer then have to return the other 32gb...

I did this before; when my data was almost transferred, one of the systems didn't pick up the Internet connection. I was scarred that 3 years of my gaming data would disappear, and I was aware that it could be undone. So, I listened to the systems, and had to fully transfer my data to the other system the next day. As a result, I transferred my data successfully.

Never mind apparently it was much faster to have a microSD card in advance because the transfer only took 25-30 minutes to finish. Much faster than the first time I did a transfer and a lot more worth it. I was also surprised that I managed to keep the pre-installed Mario and Luigi: Dream Team which was the only thing I was worried about

I lost a large friend list because I sold my old 3DS whilst waiting for a new one to arrive. Was shocked to find out that you actually have to transfer the data and it's not linked to your account.

You know, other systems just let you put your online ID in the console or handheld and that's the end of the transfer. Good to know that Nintendo is still so backwards about something as simple as a system transfer!

I was transferring data between my 3DS to my brand *New 3DS XL. I was doing the transfer via Wireless, and it was going all well and good until it got to the E-Shop part, then it had an error and stopped the transfer. Can anyone help me with this? I transferred the saved data onto my computer before hand, sense some of it was apparently corrupted on my old SD card. Also, before turning on my *New 3DS XL, I formatted a Micro SDHC 32 Gigabyte card and put it into my *New 3DS XL.

If you do the wireless data tranfer from your new 3ds Xl to the new 2ds Xl will videos and photos be able to be tranfer to the new 2ds Xl?

Two questions (before I risk anything): 1. I had a pre-installed Mario Kart 7 (not tied to my account), so if I do this "System Transfer", will it move the pre-installed game as well? Or do I have to do a "Back-up" for that particular game? 2. What about the "friends list", does that get moves as well to the New 3DS?

What if the New 3DS has something pre-installed (Pokémon 20th Anniversary New 3DS) and the card you had previously was a microSD card, but bigger than 4GB? How would I go about transfering the pre-installed software to the bigger microSD card while keeping my previous games and saves in tact?

So wait.. if you decide to transfer by using wireless transfer instead of the PC method, will the same data be sent as if you used the PC method? Is the PC method just faster & cuts time?

I have a question about Step 7: It says to click NO if you're used another Micro SD card on the N3DSXL. But that would mean that you're transferring to the default Micro SD card that comes with the system correct? If i put in a brand new 32gb card should I be clicking yes on step 7 even though it has no games or any data on it?

Why does the page about the transfer mention Joy-Cons? They don't work with Nintendo 3DS/New Nintendo 3DS, they only work with Nintendo Switch! I think you may have made a mistake with the page.

So this will transfer everything over, including downloaded games? Because I have Smash downloaded on my 3DS, and I was afraid I might not be able to move that and other games I downloaded over to the new system. So, just to confirm, if I have a downloaded game from the eShop, after transfer I can still keep the save file, right? Cause' the website says pre-installed games can be re-downloaded for free on the new system. Does this mean that games I bought from the eShop can be transferred with the save, while pre-installed games with the system have to be redownloaded?
