A video on how I build my rabbit cages using wire closet shelving. A 6' long by 32" wide cage uses the following: 2) 6' X 16" Close Mesh shelves 6) 6'X 16" standard Linen shelves, 1 hog ring pliers, and 1 box of hog or shout rings. With these materials you can make a 3 hole cage where each pen is 32" deep X 2' wide or you can make a 2 hole cage where each cage is 3'X32". I prefer the larger cages for our rabbits. The cost of a 6', 2 or 3 hole cage is right at $122 here in Northern CA. The price of a wire 1 hole rabbit cage is $45 for a 2X3. You can make a wire cage much cheaper however if I am going to be making a cage anyway, why not make them how I want.

You installed the bottom upside-down. The heavier metal supports need to be under the lighter metal. They will eventually brake with this configuration.

Great cages and I think being an older person, but I think I can make these. And so true when your talking to people, all the animals have to have their input. That was great,

Wow! I love these. I have seen a couple other peoples videos on these types of cages but you have explained it as you make them perfectly. Thank you. I think I can do this myself without my husband too now! I would love to see more videos from you on your rabbits. I also have some New Zealands, Flemish Giant, Lionheads and Jersey Woolys. I love the rabbitry you built also!! Thanks for your videos.

Great video, thank you! I was looking at other videos on these cages and pricing it out and I don't know why I didn't think to do the linen panels for the sides and top! That helps reduce the cost a bit.

Love this design. I am short as well. I have been looking for ideas for easy access for myself. I think this design will work for me Thanks for sharing!!

I’m back. THANK YOU. We will make these cages tomorrow. We have both the linen (wider gaps) and the close-mesh shelving. Question: Will the “poop” of a larger rabbit fall through the smaller close-mesh openings? (Texas A&M rabbits and NZs). I would appreciate your help because I’m torn about putting the close-mesh on the bottom, but realize the babies (when with Mom) will be safer with close-mesh on the flooring.

You’re a good teacher and easy to follow. THANK YOU. I’ve watched quite a few of these shelving videos over the last few years, but only 2 or 3 times have the shopping items been easy to make note of without re-watching a video a half dozen times to listen closely. I drive a considerable distance tomorrow to purchase the shelving. Would it work just as well if I purchase the 6-foot lengths and get the Closed-mesh panels and the linen panels, but get them in the 20-inch high size instead of 16? Will all of this still work just as well? I’m thinking we want our rabbit hutches / cages taller??? Also, my shopping list includes buying squares of floor tile. A second question: To prevent raccoons from lifting our lids, what latch type would you recommend as the quickest / easiest? I will appreciate your insights and tips. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Thank you for your kind compliment. Yes taller will definitely work just fine. As far as something to keep it closed from the raccoons the easiest I can think of would be a short bungee cord. There is a spring type closure and I cannot think of the name at the moment you would attach to the lid permanently and it would stretch down and attach to the side when you close it. But really a bungee is the easiest I think. Someone else may have a better idea.

I love the cages and I agree that store bought cages are too small, but if I could make a sugestion, can you make your cages taller? It is really good for rabbits to be able to stand on their back legs, it will mess there spine up after long periods on not being able to stand.

Interesting thought. Thank you for the suggestions. I have thought about having them taller so they have room to jump on top of their nest boxes and maybe have a shelf or almost 2and story.

How are these holding up?
@cashfamilyfarm9637
@cashfamilyfarm9637 3 жыл бұрын
They are holding up great except for the rubber type coating that is on them. That got chewed off pretty quick and the wire now is rusty looking, but the cages are sturdy and I am still loving them.

@@cashfamilyfarm9637 I really like this idea but was a bit concerned about the rabbits ingesting the coating.

Actually the cages are bigger than the recommended size for these rabbits and I prefer that they walk on a surface I can keep clean and keep them from getting parasite, ticks, and virus from.

you know they can get stuck right
@UncleDutchFarms
@UncleDutchFarms 5 жыл бұрын
Rabbits aren't going to get stuck in 1/2" spacing. I have literally never heard of that happening. Also, the thing about rabbit's feet is their claws stick out just a little bit. The natural effect is they would sink just a little in the dirt of the ground (outside in nature), leaving the rabbit's foot level to the ground but if you put them on a solid floor, it actually messes with the balance because then the end of the foot is higher than it should be, and it puts unnecessary pressure on their hocks. I know it *looks* uncomfortable, but wire floors are easily cleanable and much better for their feet than solid floors (and let's not talk about how gross and potentially infectious it would be for them to constantly be walking around on their own excrement).
