Vince, don't know if you actually read these or not, but I thought I would chime in to answer your question on Path to Glory. I've been watching your show since the beginning of the pandemic and I love it. But I've not engaged before other than to take some of your surveys over the years. But this topic is close to my heart. Sorry for the long-winded answer. PtG is the main way my group engages with AoS. I've run a campaign through 3rd edition and plan to start fresh in 4th. We are eagerly awaiting more news on how it will work in the new edition. I think there are more PtG players out there than people think. And it can be quite fun to create a narrative around your army and build it up. That said, we find the base PtG game a bit shallow and lacking. It is designed so you can play it by yourself and don't need others to also be playing. Which makes sense for a lot of players who may not have communities or the time to build one. But we want a full narrative experience, so I have expanded the rules so that there is a long-term goal and story to the campaign. We also incorporated Matched play rules and some battle plans so there are more maps to play on, with symmetrical battles in addition to asymmetrical. It's basically a house ruled system at this point, although we don't change actual gameplay very much (we do hate battle tactics with a burning passion and have been working on alternative secondaries for Matched Play games that are more narrative and fit into our story). One issue that we've run into as PtG players is that there is very little content out there about PtG. GW doesn't focus on it very much, and neither do many social media channels. In fact a lot of times balance updates and patches mess up PtG, and we've had to adjust to deal with these updates. I suspect that asking your audience if they play PtG will result in a lot of people saying no, as it's hard for PtG players to find value in a lot of the online, Matched Play content that doesn't focus on them. If everyone is talking about Blizzard, and we're not using it at all, how can my players get value out of a lot of talk about how Blizzard affects the game? So I think there will be a bias just due to the nature of the general AoS viewing audience. I've toyed with the idea of starting a KZfaq channel just to cover PtG and comment on AoS the way you do, but from a more narrative and casual perspective. I'm sure it won't be successful, but it might make me feel better to have a platform, even if no one watches. But thus far I've not put my energy into it. If you ever want to chat about the trials and tribulations of being a PtG player in a world that basically ignores PtG, I'd be happy to jump on a call. I know you don't know me from adam, but perhaps I'll see you at TMX or some other convention and we can chat.

Additionally on PTG - They're basically cramming together PTG, anvil of apotheosis, and the open war generators. Hopefully they're taking the best elements of all of the and improving on it. All of that was commonly used by people for PTG anyway. But it was all disbersed over several books, Old GHBs, etc. You really needed an event organizer running it to make it easy for players. This is throwing everything into one set of rules, which is great. Also people tend not to actually play things if you don't tell them what they're "supposed to play". Based on this I'm psyched for it!

Path to Glory has been on the horizon with my group for a while since my primary AoS playgroup is also the D&D group I started back in high school. Since I got the rest of the group into AoS at the start of 2nd, we've always kept track of the ongoing narrative between our forces even when not using extra rules. When the Anvil of Apotheosis first showed up back in whatever GHB, that shifted us even further into playing as everyone rushed to kitbash a new character. We were gearing up to start a new campaign last March, this time building terrain based around our keeps (with the mindset of Deepkin boats / the Soulblight castle that can manifest in different places) but then a lot of work and family situations changed and sadly we havent gotten a game in whatsoever in that time. TLDR it is fun to do the extra bookkeeping and homework in the style of D&D having a bunch of different books to pull from to create stuff and emerges organically if you’re already telling a story while playing with the same folks
@RadioFreeHammerhal

Path to Glory I've done a whole lot. Great way to do an escalation league. It's basically your into-level narrative play system. I think it needs some rules tweaks. As for the people intimidated by rules, basically everything extra happens BETWEEN GAMES, so you can just sit with your book and go through the steps. Only thing that carries into gameplay ate whatever upgrades/casualties/injuries/items you have accumulated. Which is usually like 1 thing per game added

My play group pivots between wanting to practice for local tournaments by using GHB rules and battle tactics, and playing narrative campaigns. It's a space where you can build up and army and try new things and worry more about having an epic narrative without the tax of getting in and out of a boat to win the battle. We make up some of our own missions, and play through the narrative missions that come with battle tomes and the new dawnbringer series. Especially when learning an army, or playing with the portions of our play group that don't keep up with the game as much.

In addition... for regular meet ups of odd numbers of people: having 3 armies in a free for all using the new Triumph and treachery rules and leaning into the narrative aspect of the game is a varied and fun experience.

I played Path to Glory at the start(ish) of 3rd edition, but there wasn't nearly a large enough playgroup for AoS at my shop. Going into 4th edition, we have quite the interest in AoS building and those guys that are looking to play are also the guys that played Crusade at the start of 10th ed 40k.

RE: Path to Glory. I'm keen to have an experience that captures the feel of the warband campaign system in the original Realm of Chaos books. In particular, I think those were characterized by dense, crunchy rules with silly but fun things like D1000 tables and flowcharts for the growth of your chaos champion. Much of this was cruft, but it inspired storytelling and elaborate hobby projects. There was also a fantastic narrative table that would act as a launchpad for the premise of a match, which could also include PvE encounters (something that doesn't exist at all in most modern wargames). I guess what I want is a thick, dense sourcebook that takes the solid bones of AoS and transforms it into something between Necromunda (in customization and rules density) and Spearhead (in the scale of the tabletop battle). These rules could exist entirely outside of the battletomes, leaving those books with no PtG rules at all. In their current form, neither Path to Glory (in AoS) nor Crusade (in 40k) scratch this itch because they just don't have enough substance and the possibility space is too confined.

@escapo6895 Ай бұрын
@@Weed_Ghost There were two books: Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness, and Realm of Chaos - Lost and the Damned. Combined, they were an anthology of rules for all of the Warhammer games at the time: Fantasy Battle, Fantasy Roleplay, and 40k. In retrospect, they were the bedrock of most of the modern lore around chaos. They fleshed out the four gods and their minions, Introduced all kinds of concepts that we take for granted now, like daemon princes and chaos spawn, fleshed out the backstory behind the Emperor in 40k and the Horus Heresy, introduced the Grey Knights, and were just generally a treasure trove of cool and sometimes oddball stuff. The physical books were reissued a few years back by GW as Warhammer World / Event exclusives. They might still be available there. The originals are quite rare, but you can surely find PDFs of them online.

@@escapo6895 I loved those books when I was a kid. I think they came out around the time of 3rd edition WFB. So maybe the late 80s. I used to pour through them, just reading all the lore and looking at all the chaos mutations your hero could get. They were so deep and thick with content. The art was fantastic as well. GW doesn't put out products like them anymore.

excellent show as usual even solo! also wanted to respond about PTG as my partner and I enjoy it and it's a good fit for us with our busy work schedule. I really enjoy matched play games, but don't always have the time to play with others or a full on 2000 point game. 1000 Points are quicker, but lose some fun aspects/strategies since game balances tend to be focused on 2000 points games which makes sense as the tournamnet scene focuses on that. So PTG adds some extra elements that make smaller games at 1000 points or lower a bit more interesting; It's a nice balance of time and enough rules 'flavor'. We also like to have our units feel a bit more important with the added RPG/story aspects and makes painting them a bit more engaging. Anyway, really glad they are still supporting PTG in the new edition. Wouldn't mind it if you guys covered it once in a while or at least a quick shoutout. I get a little sad when you guys skip over it during tome discussions or think it's too lame hehe

I'm in a PtG campaign as a brand new player. I enjoy the idea of armies that get progressively bigger and learning them that way. However, all the extra management on top of the regular game is really cumbersome. There's also mechanics that feel way too punishing to a noob who is going to lose the vast majority of their games. Good veteran players will cruise up to 2k points and enjoy the extra flavor but noobs end up just treading water and fall way behind on roster size.

The LGS's here have each run a couple Path to Glory campaigns over the course of 3rd edition, they were pretty popular and drew in a good amount of new players each time. It's a fun way to play, just seems like the biggest hurdle is having a store willing & able to organize such a campaign and drive interest over the course of a couple months.

An idea for using the cards in a regular game. You draw the cards and could mulligan your hand. But. You can’t use, score or discard them during the first round. This way you can plan your second round and the way you approach the game and the 12 cards would be enough. Gotta give this a try.

Spearhead seems like the PERFECT system for learning AoS (and a great model for Combat Patrol 2.0 next edition) - similar but slightly different, all the pieces are there-ish but again, different (commands as cards, spells as abilities, battle tactics worked in cleverly as smaller version cards, built-in terrain to encourage big-game terrain use, etc)

The last campaign I did awarded points for writing fiction that turned the games into an ongoing story which I loved (my son won the loremaster award). Path to Glory has been a great system for us out here in my local area. We do have a decent amount of players for matched Play and tournaments. However our player base is more interested in narrative and Path to Glory so we run a couple campaigns a year of that. 10-15 on average for our tourneys but our PtG leagues will bring anywhere from 25-40 at our highest count last year. For myself at least, I do a ton of tourneys a year and couple practice games so outside of that, it's refreshing and much more an interest to me with the Shake up and fun that can happen with PtG or even Triumph and Treachery over the standard matched play.

So amped for Spearhead and the potential it seems to be bringing to the table= fingers-crossed! As for your potenitla new co-host...Been a ragular consumer of Warhammer Weekly since the start of AoS and have always enjoyed the crews take on the game and hobby. As a whole the community has seemed to be much more comptetively and meta focused with this past edition of AoS3. Have alwyas enjoyed Tyler's take on the hobby (I miss Scrubby & Wells!) but I think you guys got really tunnle-visioned on the competeive aspect fo the game. Would be good to see some balanced perspective with a new regular voice that is not just another known entity in the community. I understand that matched play is a big part of what dirves the currnet game and community, but we need not forget that the hobby and narratve aspect of the game is what makes it uinuqe and brings a little magic to engaging with the game/hobby. more magic is mor better! ;)

I like the cards better for battle tactics, a way to use them that could work in matched play is to be able to do the normal commands from the cards that are already available through the command points system for free and even if it was already used in the phase. For path to glory, I've played narrative event that used modified versions of the path to glory rules and very much enjoyed myself, this new system seems very fun, especially the anvil of apotheosis, will probably try it with my friends.

It should be noted that there are very different types of randomness. Output randomness (you do something and get a random result) like rolling off for a big bonus can easily be frustrating, especially when used too much in a game. Input randomness (you get a random set of options, but then have full control over them) like the Battle Tactic / Command cards can lead players to make interesting or hard decisions and can prevent the game from feeling too samey. I definitely like the general gist of the card-based Battle Tactic system in Spearhead more than the fixed list in the main game. The latter leads to way more analysis paralysis and longer thinking periods at the start of each turn. And to more samey games, as Tom often points out.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Ай бұрын
An excellent point. I’m not sure actually if spike sees a real difference there (does that psychographic profile just hate all randomness? Maybe) but it is a material difference in design and effect.
@starslayer2438
@starslayer2438 Ай бұрын
From my experience with the competitive communities of several wargames and boardgames, most Spikes hate input randomness a lot less. Because they have the final say and are in control of the final decision that results in a game action. Edit: Drawing cards from a randomized deck and then having to play with those cards is a prime example for input randomness. And Magic and similar card games are nonetheless very popular among Spikes.

As far as using the Battle Tactics system from Spearhead in full games of AoS, I'm perfectly willing to throw the regular BT system in the trash but I'm not quite so willing to throw the existing Command system in the trash. I'd have to see it all in action though before I fully made up my mind.

As I said last week, with the benefit so seeing the second article, spearhead is definitely what has me engaged the most. Path to glory, should appeal to me, I loved the slaves to darkness campaigns we even modified it for 5th ed. I enjoyed the original white dwarf path to glory ... the new ones in all the iterations I have read seems to be to mechanic focused. Also not army games. If I have done army campaigns the best have always been the old overlords 3 part narrative style. Game 1 have a setting, name the leader play the game. Name peices as they draw your attention, game 2 use game 1 to set objectives, game 3 the finale informed by games 1 and 2. Very emergent story, not mechanical

Yeah, PtG is quite inspiring format for me, while I go to tournaments a few times a year, I'd say about 60-70% of all my games in 3rd edition were done in PtG. I ran a few solo campaigns by myself right from the launch of Dominion box and later we gathered several times with friends with our own home rules for group campaigning. And when Dawnbringers launched we even gathered about 25 or so people in our campaign, first book added a few interesting rules and we were hyped... but then two books in a row we get new PtG rules only for CoS, and none of us played cities, so unfortunately our campaign quickly fizzled out after second Dawnbringers book. And now I'm cautiously waiting for the changes in PtG in AoS4, and unfortunately this article gives mixed feelings for now...

Also PTG is too much of a hassle. I like developing a character. But to ad all the rules and then convince my friends to also learn more rules than they are already juggling in their head is a big hurdle

I think when the Thondia book came out, it must not have sold well Hence, no new narrative only books and so no tugging on the Dawnbringer thread until we get to the end of the edition book line (it got merged) I was actually looking forward to a Season of War: Gallet and Season of War: Andtor Don't think those will be arriving unless a fan does it (and even then it's unofficial AND with AoS 4 coming --- out of date)

So, here's my thinking on Path to Glory. I want to love it. I want to give every hero and every unit a name, a backstory, and keep track of their battle record. But AoS lethality is set too high, and if most units are being wiped out over a course of the game, it breaks my immersion. Couple that with the typical game size...a modern company is roughly 100 fighters, and modern armies are WAY smaller than they were in days of yore, so an AoS game is basically like, the Warriors and Baseball Furies showing up to the playground and deciding nobody leaves until at least 75% of us are dead, if you catch my drift. Also, I would totally play a Warriors themed war game and now I'm sad that there isn't one. Edit: Yes, I like, really, really like cards, especially these ones. They make games more dynamic, and, while there is a degree of luck, there is also a lot of skill expression involved in knowing when go for them, when to hold them and when to fold them.

I played path to glory for a while in a narrative focused campaign. Was fun up until some of the most regular available opponent's ideas of playing their armies narratively was to avoid trying to win because they wouldn't fight to the death so it was just sky dwarves playing solitaire at me while I farmed points and got shot at.

My 2 cents about the Path to Glory / Spearhead question. I personally have no interest at all in Path to Glory. I tried it once, the people I played with weren't even that well versed in the main game (matched play) and it was adding a bunch of extra rules to keep track of to make it even more complicated (it seemed to me like it was meant to appeal to less competitive players but seemed even more complicated than Matched Play). I would maybe consider it as an alternative game mode if I was playing every week with the same group of friends but I'm lucky if I get to play more than once every 1-2 months right now. As for Spearhead, I was curious about it in order to try to get family members/friends in (simplified rules, shorter game, cheaper to get into) but after they showed that it now has a lot of extra rules that the main game doesn't even have (to make it more balanced and fun in itself), I'm not really excited for it anymore. It seems like it'll be a mini game with rules of its own that is similar to Matched Play, simplified and then "recomplexified" with a bunch of cards and extra rules. As a teacher, I'm not sure how I feel about it because I thought it'd be a stepping stone to teach AOS but now it feels like a significant part of it will be wasted teaching rules that will need to be unlearned afterwards for full sized battles. Overall, I think this is better for the Spearhead game itself if people enjoy that mode but worse as a tool to teach AOS matched play. Good show as always!

As I don’t know many players and my friendly local created their first league as a ptg league. I’m currently playing it once a fortnight. I prefer 2k games and find some of the rules and book keeping annoying but it’s been a great way to meet some AoS people - so I can’t complain too much that they make it / continue it. A few people have suggested that spearhead (when released) would be better for this but we shall see.

I think you mentioned it before when they announced AoS 4.0 was going modular - how do you balance points in a modular system? Not just for casters and the magic modules, but even for battle tactics, or commands, their existence or non-existence can affect game balance between units, and that is going to make points difficult in this modular system. If GW has problems balancing points in a static system, how much confidence should we have when the system isn’t static? Edit: How’s this for a fix to the roll off on that twist you were concerned about (the vines) - why not take out the roll and just say both sides each get to choose a unit? That seems more interesting than the roll.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Ай бұрын
That’s a brilliant fix, that’s what I’m talking about! - as to balancing, you have to balance assuming everything is in play, and just hope it doesn’t skew too much if not present.

I feel like the Path to Glory rules are more aimed at people who prefer games like Blood Bowl leagues. The equivalent of matches play for Blood Bowl is a horrible experience. Some teams were designed to be front loaded for immediate gains while others take a long term approach towards upgrading your models over a league season. Removing that balancing factor of growth is a deal breaker. People who want to grow their team in a league system are the types of players that Path to Glory attracts. Particularly when GW posted that bit about creating custom heroes for Path once you’ve got access to your battle tome’s unique Path rules.

Really hopeful for Spearhead. I’m a little skeptical based on how weak Combat Patrol was/is, but as you say, different team and they already seem to have put more thought into the system. What do you think about the rumors that Spearhead is going to replace Warcry? The more we see about Spearhead, the more likely it seems.

Tyler will be missed! Hope to see him back soon and wish him the best :) Re: Path to Glory, we've tried to do campaigns 2x at my LGS for newer AoS players and each time it fizzled out after ~3 weekly sessions. These attempts all began with 6-8 players. PtG has proven too unbalanced, to the point where new players can accidentally (or not) make terribly NPE lists, particularly for other new players this is counterintuitive to the goal of on-boarding. I've always assumed it was a Marketing driven rules set, where campaign progression heavily encourages you to buy a new box of models. The awkward placement of the rules in a 50 dollar book smack in the middle seems to corroborate this theory. IMO, the campaign mechanics are often not sufficiently rewarding in a way that allows players to immediately feel more powerful after a battle. I could go on but this is a youtube comment, and these seem to be the largest contributors to the dissolution of the early dissolution of these attempted PtG campaigns. Keep up the great work Vince, you're a machine.

I am new to AoS, but Path to Glory and narrative play is literally the only thing I´m interested in Warhammer😁. I come from tabletop rpgs and historical wargames and what drawn me to Warhammer is a grand campaign like the ones I play for Hail Caesar, but in a fantasy setting. I have little to no interest in matched play.
