My fiancee and I adopted a Cherryhead 6 months ago. We named her Toti. She was kept in a very small enclosure for 2.5 years and did not get the exercise and nutrition she needed, which is why she has some pyramiding. We kept her in her old enclosure for a few months while we planned/saved for/finally built her new home, which is in this video.
About the enclosure:
The substrate is nine inches deep, with six inches of it cypress mulch. On top of the mulch is 3 inches coconut husk in her hide-out, bark along the walkways, and walnut casings in the hot area. We were hesitant about the walnut casings because we heard it could cause compacting. The first month we kept her in the new enclosure we kept a close eye on her to make sure she did not try to eat it and continued to have regular bowel movements. She has not tried to eat it and continues to have regular bowel movements. We decided to keep it in because she enjoys digging her limbs in it and it hasn't caused any problems. (At the first signs of compacting we are prepared to remove the walnut casings). Under the walnut casings is a layer of rocks which warm up during the day and continue to keep the area warm for a few hours after her lights turn off (Her lights are on an automatic timer which turn off at 8:30pm and turn on at 7:30am.) This hot area stays consistently at 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and lowers to 80F for about fifteen minutes after we spray the enclosure (We mist the entire enclosure three times a day, 800mL). On top of the misting, we have a ReptiFogger running 13 hours/day which helps keep the enclosure humid.
The pond is filtered and heated with a submersible heater which keeps the water comfortably at room temperature. The submersible filter keeps the water moving so the temperature is generally consistent, but it is a slight amount warmer under the heat lamps. We give Toti's pond a full clean and water change once a week. We can change the depth of the water easily by adding or removing aquarium stones. The depth in the video is what we have found to be most comfortable for her. I know that having deep water is a drowning risk but because the enclosure is so large we have never seen her climbing up the sides, so she has never fallen on her back (this used to happen often in her old enclosure).
The three plant boxes are all removable, and we have put in plants that are all tortoise-friendly (Hibiscus, Bromeliad, Aloe, and Cane). Her cooler end of the enclosure is consistently around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but a little warmer in her hide-away (we added a 50 watt black light bulb to increase humidity in the hide-away).
We feed Toti every morning, various greens and a constant supply of pellets. Her favorite treat is un-spiced Pumpkin Pie filling. We coat her food in a reptile calcium and vitamin spray supplement. She also has a cuttlebone
The walls above the substrate are taller than Toti is long so there is no chance of her escaping, but it is large enough that she doesn't try to climb the sides of the enclosure. Under the substrate is a thick plastic lining to keep the wood from absorbing water. The black paint is actually an outdoor fence stain so it resists water absorption. We are in the process of finding another Cherryhead to accompany Toti.
We are always looking for ways to improve her enclosure. It is still unfinished (especially around the pond area, which we intend to build up with some more plastic plants to include more hiding places for Toti).
Please leave comments or suggestions! We are new to caring for tortoises and appreciate any advice you may have regarding our enclosure. (I will have to re-measure, but I think the size of the "L" shape is nine feet by six feet, and the thickness of the "L" is three feet in the longer and shorter sections).

I am looking to get one in the next few weeks, how big is your enclosure? im looking to do an indoor enclosure because im in a cold climate. does the enclosure really need to be 3ft x 6 ft or can you get away with smaller? I intend on letting them roam the house daily.

The way you picked him up screams “I deal with this tortoise a lot”. It’s so funny how seasoned tortoise owners just kinda man-handle like that, it’s great.

Redfoot tortoises are very active! Mine our two years old and need lots of room to move around, they have their indoor 5 by 3 foot and an outdoor patio area like 10 by 8 feet. I feel like even this isnt enough at times! Really great pets, but you gotta have space!

That is fantastic your Tort is a lucky shell baby. I'm looking to build something similar for my 4 year old Redfoot who is quickly outgrowing her existing home. Is this a rigid pond liner? I've been looking at using one as a Base. :-)

This is incredible. I aspire to create something like this for my Redfoot. Based on the size of this enclosure, would you say it's safe to house two tortoises? Also, are there any other breeds you can house with Redfoots? I realize given their dietary restrictions and habitual differences that answer may vary, but was curious what you thought.

Hi! I am getting a Hermann tortoise soon and I have a question; if I keep my baby tortoise in a 100 by 45 cm tortoise table, will it be able to live there most of its life (with daily outside walks, and supervised daily roaming around the apartment) ? If no, how long can I keep him in there?

Brendon's forehead is bigger than my future that depends on the sex males stay much smaller than females I have a male dalmatian Herman he is five inches and will get no bigger . he is in a tortoise table that is 4 feet by 2 feet and has a second level that measures 22 inches by 13 inches. so figure out what you want . look into investing in tortoise tables or make your own. invest in something much bigger so he can stay in it a while 100cmby45 is way to small for an adult Herman male or female.

it is expensive, unfortunately, but it was a lot of fun to build and worth it in my opinion. Its a hobby and all hobbies cost money. There's nothing wrong with the storage tub, as long as all their needs are being met. and tortoises live a long time! if youre unhappy with the storage tub you have a lot of time to save up and build something different.

thanks so much. the pond is custom built. At the local Rona store I bought a sheet of rubber pond lining. They sell it by the foot, so I bought 1 foot of it, and it comes off a big roll about 8ft long. Then I built a simple wooden frame and cut up the pond liner into about eight separate pieces, which I drilled into the wood frame and overlapped each other. I "glued" them together using aquarium silicone and then sealed the seams with silicone

When we adopted her we also were given her original enclosure. It was 2 ft x 3 ft and was held together by duck tape.

I live in Canada so I'm not sure if it is different, and I bought it at Rona but I'm sure pond liner is available at most if not all home improvement stores. I paid $32 dollars for "1 foot" of the liner, which in reality is about 1 ft. x 8ft. which was more than enough to build the little pond. I am updating the water feature in the enclosure over the next month or so, when it is finished I will post a new video and in it I will include what this pond looks like deconstructed.

Its really easy. Mostly they go when they are soaking in the water, so whenever I notice it I just quickly scoop it out with a cup and do a partial water change. They really don't go often enough that this is a major problem. Otherwise I spot it in another area of the enclosure, usually by the food bowls or the fogger, and I just scoop it out with some kleenex.
