New Spiderbeam 10m Mini Mast exceeded my expectations!

Spiderbeam New 10m Mini Fiberglass Pole is equipped with the new feature - a metal eyelet permanently glued in to the top section of the pole. This mast is perfectly suited for portable Ham Radio operation and the eyelet makes field wire antenna deployment even faster. 10m pole is made of a strong fiberglass with exceptionally thick and sturdy section walls. The top section is still 6mm thick which makes it an ideal vertical wire or a lightweight dipole antenna support. At the level of 6-7m this Spiderbeam 10m mast is able to support even a light Yagi antenna (I have yet to try this out!).
I designed and 3D printed my own Guying Rope Collar for this mast which snugly fits on the 3-d mast section and provides not only a good support but also a possibility to rotate the mast when installed in working position.
I’ve also designed and made my own Safeguard Mast Clamps to secure the mast from self -collapsing under its own weight and guying ropes tension.

Well, do I feel stupid! I do something very similar with my 7 meter Spiderbeam mast, but I have always had to lay it down, attach my guy ropes, and then stand it up. It NEVER occurred to me to just extend the top two sections first so that I can reach them after extending the bottom three sections and attaching my ropes. I tried this out tonight and it "works a treat"! I also gave it a try with my 12 meter mast (placing the guy ropes just above the bottom section) and was able to make it work, although I needed a small step stool to reach high enough to pull out the other sections. Thanks so much for this brilliant idea!

Might be easier just to use guy/tent rope tensioners instead of the fiddly slide knots. Can buy or 3d print them. Another possible addition - put a peg partially in the ground and place the base on it to prevent the base moving, or dig a small hole or 3d print a spike with a receptical on top to slot in the base.

Absolutely, you can use whatever is at hand and most convenient, but just up to he point when you… lose your fancy tensioners or your 3D-printed ones brake. Then, the knowledge of the knots may be a difference between you have the antenna up, or you cancel your outdoorsy activation :) Wish you well! 73! Linas LY2H

I own the Spiderbeam 12 m mast. Works great. I tie it to a fence post or other object. Rather heavy to tote around. Thinking about adding the Spiderbeam 10 m and even the m to my collection. An amateur radio operator can never have too many rigs or portable antenna masts. 73/72 de AE5ZX

Btw, one thing I’ve seen folks do for the guy lines is to measure out a rope that can be attached to the base and be used to measure the correct radius for the guy lines. It’s not used to fix anything, just a measurement guide. Maybe overkill for this scenario, but could be used if somebody would like a guide for where to place the stakes.

I have been searching for a portable mast for sometime now. I have been comparing the expensive and stiff carbon fiber masts versus the lightweight and much less expensive fiberglass. Your video (as well as your other very informative topics) has convinced me that this mast is the right compromise. Once again, thank you for your efforts.

Very good Linas, I bought the same Spiderbeam pole a few months ago and mine did not have the eyelet. I used a plastic rawlplug of the right size for the top section and glued it in and then have a screw hook that I keep inside the rubber cap and I simply screw it into the rawlplug and then hang my ended from there. I have the 12HD pole as well for use at home. They are very good.

Great setup! I ordered exactly the same mast and can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the tips how to set this up without a tripod or any other support. Now I need to learn how to tie those knots :)

I own a 12 mtr pole, but for outdoor us its looks like a 10 mtr is very nice. There is not everywhere a tree 🌲🌳 a very good excuse for buying😄

Thanks Linas great video about your new pole. my biggest pole is only 8m but these days I have the carbon mini by SB. I use 600mm of 40m white pvc pipe for a bottom section to put in rocky summit or against fence post or bushes to hold my link dipole. Carbon pole slides inside 40mm tube to carry on my bag and I have a pin through the pipe to set carbon mini about 30mm down inside the pipe to erect. Seems to work ok and makes my ant height 6m in middle . vk5cz ..

Go ahead, use it! The eyelet is usefull but not essential :), the mast is just a perfect travel companion with realy meaningful erection hight of 10m. 73! Linas LY2H.

Great video Lynas, I own 30 ft and 40 ft Spider Beam masts and can attest to their high quality and rugged design. As noted they will not be available in the U.S. until the first week of November 2022. Worth the wait. I plan to order several more for my QRP antenna farm here in S. Florida. Best feature is no metal parts, so no rust. Jim - N7RCS

yes i have a couple of poles 5m one 7m 10m and i have just bought the daddy of poles a 40ft one which is telescopic and great for wires even beam and rotators its a rascal alloy and its not going to bend over like them type one. i bought this this week to put my 7 band cobweb antenna on and i can lower it when its windy as i live on the local cbers high ground which is 510ft asl so get alot of strong winds but waiting to get better weather to put it up so if you want to see it subscribe to the youtube and you will 73 great video and as allways great dx 73 from m7byf

Its a great mast Lynas, I love mine. Use full height for wires and remove a few sections and you can support light VHF beams etc.

@@Linas_LY2H Hi Linas, my 10m Moxon is about finished. I am configuring it so it can also go on this mast at say 5 or 6 m. The total weight of the antenna is 1200-1300g. Watch this space.

What kind of black magic is this? You connected the random wire directly with the banana adapter to the TRX? Is there a special kind of tuner built in the elecraft, that you don't need a 9:1 unun??? Never seen this setup...

Sure, it's a black magic coming from the in-built ATU in the Elecraft KX2! It comes as an option with this rig and is known as one of the best tuners on the market. An important part of the black magic is also a ~10m long counterpoise wire, it might take some length adjustment depending on the band, if the ATU goes into trouble tuning. Good luck, 73! Linas LY2H

After watching your excellent video I've become interested in the Spiderbeam mast. I want it to anchor one end of my 40-10m EFHW antenna. I had it supported it by a tree in my backyard but i couldn't get it high enough and it was dropping too low. The grass cutters cut the rope on the tree side, dropped the antenna and rolled it up. Thankfully they didn't cut the wire.😮 It was interfering in their ability to cut the grass and although I was frustrated, I really wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. What I'd like to try now is to purchase the Spiderbeam. I'd like it to be a permanent but possibly movable mast securing the lower sections to my chain link fence in the backyard. I'd like your thoughts and advice. Secondly, do the upper sections lock by tightening into each other without the use of house clamps? If so is the overall height adjustment only by using the lower sections and using the hose clamps? I'm dealing with some health issues but this seems doable for me especially because it was designed to be portable and easy to set up. 73, KA2AHE Ed

Hello Ed, thanks for watching! I like Spidermasts due to their renowned quality and a very good value for money, I think it would serve good for you too. As to your installation situation, I can give you no advice without knowing and seeing your particular location. If I were installing a 40-10m EFHW in my own backyard , I would probably used a 10m or 12m mast firmly fixed to the fence post (if it’s only thick enough and solidly installed into the ground) by its lower section. For permanent, or semi-permanent installation I would use the rubberized clamps on each section as these masts (as any other) might autocollapse after some time of standing in the open air due to the temperature fluctuations, winds etc. For the 12m mast I would use clamps even for the temporary installation, like field day etc. I had once even a more lightweight 10m mast collapsed suddenly in the early summer morning after staying overnight during the field day. The clamps are easy to install and make a huge difference in mast stability. If I lived in a very windy place, I would install at least one row of guying ropes in addition to the fence post fixture. As it comes to the hight adjustment, I’m afraid these masts are not suited for that. You have to fully extract each section and make it auto-fix by turning the section by hand and then securing it with the clamp. You can’t really extend only a half of the section. The only way to regulate the hight is by removing unnecessary top sections, by the means of pulling them out from the bottom side of the mast while still in the collapsed state, before the erection. As it comes to the antenna configuration, I would try the inverted L version of the EFHW. It’s like 9m of wire (on the 10m mast), or 10-11m , non critical, of wire (on the 12m mast) runs up the mast vertically starting at the transformer fixed to the mast lsome 3ft (1m) above the ground, and the rest of the wire goes horizontally to a tree or slopes down at some angle to the support post (no less than 2m in hight , preferably). In such a configuration the EFHW might demonstrate good DX properties , and it would be more effective use of the mast, other than just serving as support for one point. Had a 10m pole since June. Still standing. Doesn't have the eyelet though. Anybody have suggestions on fitting something similar. Looks like a simple split pin glued in the end.

Nice to hear it's still standing! :) As to the eyelet, yes , it looks like a simple split pin, and the whole difference is in quality of glue- must be some epoxy or so, as it is really strong bond. 73! Linas LY2H

I use two small plastic ties:one forms a small ring, the second one is used to tie the ring to the pole. It works.

Hello, thanks for watching! I think, any printer would do , as this is a simple, small thing to print. I use my Prusa Mini printer. For the material, I would recommend the PETG filament , as it's UV- resistant which is important to be for the outdoorsy used parts. HTH, good luck, 73! Linas LY2H

Thanks Michael! Yes, the day was calm and in the forest :). I have yet to try it out in some strong wind in the open, but I'm more than sure it would stand any wind just fine due to really rugged fonerglass technology applied by Spiderbeam. I can speak for my 18m Spidermast though, which I have for many years. Last time it was standing for 3 months in a row last autumn in my countryside position in a very windy place on the hill under heavy elements influence. Guyed properly with 2 rows of guying ropes it showed no signs of concern :). So , the little 10m Mini should stand all the challenges just fine too. Especially fully guyed , if necessary. HTH, 73!
