The recent capture of a UK-supplied Storm Shadow missile by Russian troops in the Ukrainian war zone has raised global speculation about Russia's potential ability to replicate this once-dreaded weapon. With the missile seemingly intact and the retrieval process documented through photos, experts are speculating what could happen next. In this video, we analyze the possibilities and implications, focusing on the missile's key features, such as its stealth characteristics, electrical equipment, and targeting system. We also explore past instances of reverse engineering and the possible global impact if Russia succeeds in replicating the Storm Shadow missile. Join the discussion by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below!

You should not forget that despite the fact that the inventor of the "stealth" technology, the Soviet scientist Pyotr Ufimtsev, was lured to the USA after the collapse of the USSR, but the institute in which he worked remained in Russia.

I always say this to people, but didn't new about its institute. Good point. Probably they detect stealth aircraft easily, that would explain why they sacrifice low observability for supermaneuverability in the SU-57
@AlexKarasev
@AlexKarasev 2 ай бұрын
One of the limitations of stealth the F-117's shoot-down laid bare was that stealth coatings cease to perform when wet. Not sure how to this day nobody has talked about this (afaik), but the Russians never intended those coatings to go on planes - they were for the assets placed in the realm where it never rains.

The fact that this missile fell with minor damage indicates that it was successfully jammed. I have no doubts that this missile wasn't first which was jammed thus way and photos which were published were demonstration for NATO. Army isn't bunch of kids and such photos wouldn't be shared without permission of commanders. The idea that Russia will manufacture a clone of this missile is ridiculous to the point of absurdity. In addition to the manufacture of completely new technological lines for the creation of missiles of this design, changes in the design of aircraft that will become carriers of these missiles will also be required. Russia has its own cruise missiles that are designed for mounting on the wings of Russian aircraft and inside their fuselage. Russia has its own materials for stealth missiles. Even the idea that analyzing the details of this missile will help to shoot them down better or to jam them is also outdated. The very fact of such photos suggests that Russia is successfully doing this. The only moments when such missiles strike are the congestion of the air defense or the appearance of windows in the air defense due to their movement.

Russia has way better missiles in it's arsenal, they don't need to make a clone, they can only see where they could maybe make some improvements on their missiles which have already evolved big time during the war, as an example X-101. They probably can learn the most from the jet engine, how to increase the efficiency of their own, it's the only area they're lacking somewhat behind the west.

Kinzhal and Storm Shadow are different types of missiles though. Of course in an environment with sophisticated air defense the Storm Shadow will be less effective. But so far the west only attacked inferior adversaries with outdated or no air defense systems at all. Reverse engineering can still provide ideas for the development of new missiles (make them cheaper, more stealthy, more reliable, less susceptible for EW countermeasures etc.).

What I mostly see is that weapons that used to be considered state of the art end up being a rip off as soon as they hit the battlefield. Many tanks will be lost, it's the nature of war. To expect any tanks to be invincible on a modern battlefield only shows your ignorance and total lack of military understanding. There are less than 20 confirmed destroyed leopards while they are being used to breach multiple defensive lines a year in preparation. Now take those numbers and compare them to the more than 2,000 visually confirmed russian tank losses. That doesn't include damaged...just visually confirmed destroyed. All visible on the Oryx website. I know it must be upsetting for you russian simps to be answered with facts and not just russian fantasy and wishful thinking. There is not a single leopard I can find exploding in epic turret tossing displays like russian tanks the Internet is awash with. Leopards will be destroyed, as will Challengers and Abrahams, but the difference is many will be recovered and repaired and many of the crews will survive as unlike russian ideology western vehicles are designed and built with far superior crew survivability than anything the russians can field. That added survivability means the Ukrainian crews gain experience while russian crews are often vaporised in those glorious and epic detonation of the russian tanks. Putin the modern day Hitler is facing worse issues than the original Hitler. As German crews died the new crews had the best tanks in the world available to them they had a chance to gain experience whereas russian tanks obliterate the crews and the new crews have even less skill, and less chance to gain experience before they are also vaporised. Just like Germany in WW2 attrition will cause the russian armies collapse, as it did in WW1 and Afghanistan. Historically russia's military collapse is followed by a leadership change. That can be seen happening now as well as vlad the mads purges and growing paranoia. I'm hoping putins demise is a lot more public than Hitlers.

I am sure the technical scientists in Moscow will be able to determine whatever inherent weaknesses exist , from this captured Storm Shadow Missile. The result will give Russia’s forced more effective countermeasures to deploy when Storm Shadows are again used by the Ukrainian Air Force. This should allow Russian forces a higher likelihood of knocking out a greater percentage of the missiles, before they hit their designated targets. It should also allow the Russian scientists to share the information they green from the missile pieces captured, to their friends in Iran. No doubt the Iranians will then have the ability to reverse engineer a similar weapon, and deploy it with Iranian Air Force units. This could potentially make the Storm Shadow missions less effective against targets when they are used in the future.

Russians likely already correctly assumed how this particular missile functions evident by the fact that this one didn't reach its target and it's not the first time Russians have faced this type of missile but think of the development that Storm Shadow must have had the amount of money that was used till it was "perfected' or battle ready hundreds of millions of pounds of tax payer money wasted and Russians have gotten this tech for free if they choose to develop a clone they could do it with minimal costs in R&D though i doubt they can produce this "game changing" amount as they are under embargo missile itself probably relies on microchips that are currently unviable for Russia to purchase or produce at least at the moment however i don't find Storm Shadow missile particularly impressive.

Russia most probably has equal/better alternatives, but What russia can do, after detailed inspection and postmortem is done it will send them to China/Iran/Nk think of it as form of payment for their support in this war. Im sure chinese will be very happy get its hand on it and make better clone of UK version and sell it on open market. i can definitely say the same for NK and Iran.

I agree that the most useful aspect to Russia of capturing this relatively intact storm shadow is knowledge about its weaknesses. "Why does Russia not apply its top-tier weapons to Ukraine?" Maybe they are keetping them in reserve for a more serious opponent. Some of them, like Poseidon, would have no relevance to the war in Ukraine. In a war situation, there is always the danger of the enemy capturing an undamaged specimen to examine.

For the mere fact that Russia has downed a total of 26 of these projectiles, it already indicates the stormshadow technical weakness. Why would Russia with such advanced tech copy failure? It is a fact that Russia is more advanced in that field, the Kinzhal is still a problem to the west, so is Lancet, kornet, and the sea cruise missile used to liquify the ports which Zelenky regime admitted that they cant intercept; stormshadow is chicken feed😂

Interesting. Word on the street is that the UK Challenger tanks aren't allowed to go into battle because of their super secret armour and the possibility of it falling into Russia's hands. I guess following true pom logic, the Challengers will only be allowed out once Ukraine has achieved total victory and there's no need to use them. I wonder why they didn't stipulate the same for the SS, but I guess while Ukraine has a range of other tanks it can use instead, it doesn't have other cruise missiles.

They need to sell them, this war is all about money - USA has fucked German industry so hard lol first they blew Nordsteam so no cheap gas, now they tricked them to send their weapons to get fucked on all fronts without sending Abrams, i guess no one will buy another leopard soon. UK is not dumb i guess , they wont allow their tanks to be seen getting boned by cheap kornets and lancets. Though Storm shadow getting captured is pretty bad, i guess China Noth Korea and Iran will have good new toy to play with, once Russia is done with it.
