We called up TOPS Knives in Idaho and chatted with Craig and Dylan about two prototypes for 2020: the Trail Seeker, a result of their fourth annual employee design contest, and the Storm Vector, a chopper inspired by a Viking seax. These knives are coming soon so keep your eyes peeled!

You guys ROCK over there at TOPS! I personally own two knives from you guys. I own the Cat anti terrorism and the Saw knives! I can honestly say they are my favorite knives. However those knives are created for small to medium hands which is me but for anyone with large or extra large hands won't be able to enjoy the feel and work you can put in with these knives. These knives are built to last Forever! I also own dozens of Benchmades and Spydercos but these two are clearly my go to babies. I wish the Tops company would focus on a line of serrated knives of all types sizes and functions. For example pocket knives, bushcrafts and fixed blades folders along with bowies. You guys be SAFE, God Bless America!

The Vector looks really nice.. It's a nice take on something classic from my neck of the woods. When you compare to other Sax designs, plus the price? I think it' gonna be a success :) Good on you TOPS Knives :)! And as Always.. Thanks for informative videos Knifecenter!

So, they had the stainless steel heat treat guy make a knife out of 1095?! I wonder what he would have chosen from the more modern steels? I know 1095 is inexpensive and the heat treatment is fast and easy, but there are lots of nice stainless choices available and your materials costs are still not very high. Yes, the heat treatment can take significantly longer and be more complex but with a modern furnace control I would think it would be manageable. If Cold Steel can do large blade S35VN at a reasonable price, I would think most other people could do something similar.

They make a lot of 154cm blades as well. Its just the 1095 is easier to machine in quantity and they do it well.🍻

I really hope they don’t bring the Trail Seeker to market with those heavy cutouts in the Micarta around the handle screws. Looks a lot better and more comfortable in their prototype model being smooth. Plenty grippy without the added cuts

Tops knives have good quality knives. But lately and these two designs look like they trying to get weird! Prather Bowie, Outpost, dawn warrior, dart, mission team 21 and operator 7 along with El chete is favourites. ☝️😎

You can't find a better or nicer production knife than Tops. Esee coming in second but they don't have any where near the line up as Tops or fit n finnish. I always think of Tops as a semi custom knife. They make a knife for every personality and right here in the states.

Your "special" heat treat gets your 1095 to a max of 58 rockwell? yikes. no thanks.
@MovieGuy666

the harder the steel the more it loses its toughness , outdoor knives don't need a higher HRC.
@annihilousterminus5728
@annihilousterminus5728 3 жыл бұрын
He said DIFFERENTIAL heat treat. Rc 58 on the edge, way softer on the spine. There's no Yikes here. A differential heat treat is by far and away the best type of heat treat for 1095, yielding the best edge retention and the highest toughness, and Tops is the only production company doing it (afaik). It's typically a custom knife feature.
