I made this video to help others learn more about the Trek Emonda SL5 2021 because I didn't see many reviews online, and I was looking for other reviews myself before I bought this bike. I hope you find it helpful, and if so please Like it and Comment and I'll try to answer your questions. Bike size= 56; my height= 5'10" (~178 cm), maybe 5'11 with shoes (180cm); Inseam= 33.5 inches).

Greg, great video. Beautiful bike. I almost did the same thing. I drove 150 miles to pick up my SL6 in the bay area. I live in Folsom. If I order it in my local store, it will take at least 6 months. This is my first road bike, had a mountain bike for the last 5 years. This bike is amazing. Happy ride!

Just wanted to personally say that this was such a wholesome video. You can really see the excitement that this bike brings to you specifically, not everyone wants or needs a $10K bike and this was very well illustrated with the options of a personal seat, stem and set of wheels. Hope you are getting some good seat time and enjoying the bike!

For those reading this, the bike is amazing. It does everything well- aside from actually being lightweight. Previously, I had a rim brake Specialized Allez Sprint with designer carbon everything. It rode on 65mm wheels and 25c TL tires. It was a quick bike and I was able to gather a handful of local sprinting strava segments. This new bike is setup similarly (carbon everything), but with 28c tires and it rips. I'm impressed everytime I go for a ride. It has a very slight damping effect- due to the carbon, yet it has precise feedback that "talks" to you. Out-of-saddle sprinting feels similar, but not quite to the level of the Sprint. Outside of that, every other aspect is improved upon. It slices the downhills, brakes consistently and like mad. If you're on the fence and can score one, do it...now 🙂

I just bought this bike. I live in southern Pennsylvania and wanted a fast climbing bike for all the hills we have here. I've been having a hell of a time getting a bike with all thats been going on. The shop closest to me only deals with Trek and sold me on the company for their great customer service. I went in there for some bar tape on a used pos i just bought on FB market place and left with this. They had received one of these 54cm, my size, that day. I bought it on the spot. Great video!

I wanted to buy either an sl6 pro or a madonne sl6, but trek told me id need to wait for 9-12 months until delivery, but lucky me they had an emonda sl5 on my size. Cool! Sounds like a great setup! Totally agree in the fast part. Those wheels cut through the air. Looking at all my Strava times compared to several years ago and my times are all down (despite getting fat and sedentary in the pandemic!). Also you should check out Continental GP 5000’s (tubeless) for tires. I just switched after getting a big flat on my stock Bontragers (which were great) and the Conti GP 5000’s are even better. Super smooth and grippy like everyone says.

Very helpful video- thanks! My biggest concern as I’ve been thinking about an Emonda is the geometry. Coming from a relaxed gravel bike, I was thinking this might be too aggressive. However this is the first time I’ve seen it on KZfaq setup in a way that looks really comfortable.

This was my very own primary concern. I bought this bike sight unseen, upgrading from a Specialized Roubaix Comp carbon with endurance geometry-- they built the thing for Paris Roubaix. I loved the bike and put many thousands of miles on it. Also I tend to get low back pain from rowing crew in college, so geometry and aggressive stance was my single biggest concern. So I basically bought it sight unseen, driving 15 hours in the snow up to Olympia Washington to pick it up. The whole drive I was concerned that I had just committed several thousand dollars to a racing bike that would hurt my back after the first 100 miles. Long story short, it's significantly more comfortable than even my Roubaix Comp endurance. I've done a number of rides now for several hours each and were it not for sore legs the next day, I could easily hop back on the next day and ride again. Don't believe all the hype about the aero geometry and aggressive racing stance, etc. This bike is super comfortable and you can ride it for hours, no problem.

A handsome rig. I must admit, I find Sram (Rotor, Campagnolo) levers & cranksets a tad more visually fitting the frame. I'm also a fan of compact frames / sloping top tubes (i.e., 10-20º) - find them both more visually appealing and practical. A 5-10º greater slope in the top tube would also make the use of a +7º stem redundant.

Great video. Because of watching this, I decided to buy the exact same SL5 (in the exact same color). I also live in the Bay Area and they had my size at the Dublin, CA store...so I didn't have to drive all the way to Seattle (or even LA)...lucky me. 🙂 Prior to watching this video, I had a much higher end Specialized S-Works Tarmac on order...actually pre-order with no ETA in sight. I have subsequently canceled that order and got this. At my level, I have no need for a super-bike. I would like to get the same angled-up stem that you have. My back is okay but the back of my neck is uncomfortable from looking up when I ride. Where did you get that stem?

Greg - I did the kinda the same thing. Got the sharp looking and affordable SL5 in blue. Gave it the biggest energy boost possible (and serious weight loss) by upgrading the wheels to the top notch light weight Zipp 303 Firecrest. Not a cheep upgrade.. but totally worth it. I also changed the cassette to an 11/32. I’m planning a couple of future upgrades but, I must say, they aren’t really necessary. The bike is awesome and exceeds my expectations.

how are you liking the 11/32 cassette? I am on the heavy side for a rider and think the lower gearing is something I should consider since I do a lot of climbing.

Hi Greg, nice Bike! Just got the Emonda SL6 yesterday... all in all it's a great ride. One thing that drives me absolutely insane already is the cable housing rattle inside the frame... I think it's mostly the rear shifting cabe. I your's rattling as well?
@tappertube
@tappertube 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t experienced that, but it’s easily fixable. Definitely should take back to the LBS and ask them to fix it. Sounds like someone didn’t do it right, but fortunately a minor quick fix. Also they told me that the cables might stretch after breaking in and they may tuning. So that could be it.

I bought the sl5 emonda trek just recently. Cost me 3,000 euros, not cheap, it must be a mid range race bike surely despite the entry level trek carbon bike. The wheels are a bit heavy and i cant afford to upgrade as just bought the bike, but the wheels are still getting me my best times on tough strava segments, so the bike is clearly fast

Thanks dude! Awesome video, just what I was looking for. How comfortable is the bike for long rides? Any chance to compare it with Domane?
@tappertube
@tappertube 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't compared it to the Domane. In fact I had a Domane on hold with a deposit at a local bike store (last Domane in stock) until I found this Emonda SL5, and I opted for the Emonda SL5. I've heard the Domane is even more smooth and very comfortable, which is saying a lot, because this Emonda SL5 with 32 tubeless tires and Aeolus pro 37s rides amazingly well. I also have a tendency to get lower back pain (from my days as a rower in college), so I was concerned about comfort. Actually that was my single biggest concern. Then I've been riding this bike and I feel great during and after rides-- actually even better than Specialized Roubaix Comp carbon (endurance geometry) which I replaced with this Emonda SL5. My longest ride so far is only about 3.5 hours, so I can't say how a long ride like a Century might be. But 2-3 or 4 hours, it's very comfortable and you'll want to hop back on the bike the next day (assuming your legs aren't tired!).

@@tappertube im curious if the carbon wheels made any difference for long distance riding? I wonder if the ride will be the same with alloy standard wheels? Can’t decide if i want the checkpoint, domane or this one coming from rim brakes. Does it have lower and longer geometry?

Very nice, I just picked up an AL5 and my last bike was a Roubaix Expert full carbon Ultegra. Have put abut 100 miles on it in the trainer (live in Michigan) and have been fine tuning the fit. Been thinking about the stem as well only because of the reach difference between this H2 fit and the Roubaix. Probably wait until a I get some good road miles first. But I have a question, did you find any steering degradation going with the 80MM stem? I know some bikes the steering tends to get twitchy with shorter stems. However the stock stem on mine is only a 90mm, so not a big change. Just curious if you noticed anything. Thanks BTW Great looking bike!
@tappertube
@tappertube 3 жыл бұрын
Good questions about the stem. It’s definitely very responsive but I don’t know if it’s the more aero geo or the shorter stem. I think it’s the aero setup compared to my endurance Roubaix Comp. But if it’s helpful, I also bought a 70mm stem and tried that. Even that wasn’t too twitchy, but the fit wasn’t right. I think the 80mm is great. Also the wheels make a big difference. I was on 23s on my Roubaix, now I’m riding tubeless 33s in this Emonda and it’s a world of difference. The 23s at 120psi are twitchy. The Emonda is an amazing ride. I don’t know what size wheels you went with but I think you’ll find it to be an amazing bike. They really got this bike right 👍

hey man, can I ask how you upgraded to a larger cassette? I just got this bike and the cassette it comes with has a 30 tooth in the largest gear, but I thought a 30 was the largest that the stick 105 rear derailleur could accommodate. Did you also swap out the derailleur?

Great review ! I was looking at getting a Domane but saw that you changed the stem. Would you say it makes it almost like an endurance bike as far ride position ? ( I have a Giant Defy and want to stay in a similar geometry )
@tappertube
@tappertube 3 жыл бұрын
It’s more aero than an endurance geometry, but in fact I feel it’s more comfortable and I feel less neck, shoulder and back pain than compared to riding my previous road bike which was a Specialized Roubaix Comp, a true endurance bike. You could make the Emonda SL5 very aero by using 100mm stem, negative angle (say 7 degrees downward) etc. But yes, if you also use a shorter stem, say 70-80mm (I use 80mm), and positive rotation (I have a 7 degree stem), it is very comfortable. I even tested a 70mm / 17 degree stem which was good too, so you might try that. Incidentally my number one concern was comfort, coming off a previous endurance bike, and this Emonda SL5 is super comfortable.

I ordered the same (blue emonda size 56) on 8 Dec 2020 from the local store in Greece. I was told about delivery in May or June !!!Unbelievable, but I can't do anything !!! Blue is best along with orange, but sl7 is much more expensive. I also liked the wheels you put, as the wider rims look much more beautiful than the stock !!! Thanks for the review!
