The debate is not why Danny became the mad queen. We know why, the reason was shoved down our throats so fast we barely had time to choke. The debate is why, when HBO supposedly offered these men 2 more seasons to wrap this up, they decided to not only just end it over 1 season, but also shorten that season in half. THAT is where the debate and outrage lays. It's not about where the story went but why it went there so stupidly and fast.

I think it's a tough spot bc if they had built it up too much, everyone would have seen it coming from a mile away and it would have lessened the impact. I think they put enough seeds there to make it feel like there was always a chance of it happening. To tell the truth I think a lot of people forgot about all the times in the past that they have foreshadowed this and just jumped on the trend of acting like it was completely out of nowhere without bothering to research. Of course I would have preferred more episodes but oh well. What they did with the Night King is the real travesty here.

I can’t remember where I read this, but: “foreshadowing is not the same thing as character development.” I don’t criticise the outcome. I criticise how they got there.

I don't think some fans would ever have been happy with how D&D wrote the story. They just didn't want what they got. It's been a long time now but I remember the same reaction when Thomas Harris wrote 'Hannibal'. What we are hearing now is nothing to the screams of outrage when that book was published. Harris just shrugged them off, it was his story to tell...not the fans.

The last time D&D decided to rush a major plotline, they had Ellaria avenge the death of Oberyn by killing Oberyn's brother and destroying his entire family line. I don't think they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I don't have a problem with Dany going rogue. I just wish GOT was 10 or 15 episodes this season instead of 6. I love Emilia Clarke. She's got the acting chops for an extended look into Dany's heel turn. Danerys proves that there is good and evil in all of us.

If they had two seasons (8 and 9) minimum, with ten episodes, perhaps it would few less rushed and story would flow better and have better closures. Season 8... all about the night king. Season nine... Cersei and closure.

A lot of people argue against having one season for the night king, saying it would be impossible to have multiple battles against the undead. But, why would it have to be battles? The season could have had heaps of backstory filled in, with Bran warging back in time, to the last Long Night, and maybe he figured out how THEY beat the night king. Then you could finish the season off in episode 9 with a big battle, like the other seasons did. There was so much they could have done to both make the night king a more credible threat, AND give Branch a good storyline to follow.

I think GOT raised the bar for TV entertainment. Coffee cups and bitter endings don't change that for me. You also have to remember that Dave and Dan didn't have much book content to draw from after season six and didn't know how much Martin could finish in time. So the TV writers didn't have as much time as Martin did on the books.

The thing i don't like the most this season is why can Dragon fire blow down building's, castle walls and ships and shit but can't blow up a small slab of concrete jon snow hides behind in the long night episode.

it actually does make sense, dragon fire is incredibly hot. the reason the walls always crumble is because (and this is something you can see in the real world look at Notre Dame) medieval buildings were stacks of stone glued together by Mortar which is a paste of mud and clay, dragon fire melts all the mortar and without the glue the walls crumble on themselves extremely easily. the same goes for the boats, they are made of wood and wood expands when exposed to fire, thats why the ships explode or fall apart the wood rapidly expands until the ships pop. BUT a solid slab of pure rock like what Jon was behind had no mortar to melt and stone does not expand like wood, all it would do is absorb the heat and eventually the stone would melt. so it makes perfect sense

marlon alston It’s more than the Dany character that people are mad at though. People are mad at the Cersie/Jamie finish, Bronn, Yara, Brienne. They did a really bad job this season. It seem like they wanted to go with the WTF moments vs. actually good storytelling.

Have to admit I agree with all this. I feel that fans are being very overcritical of Season 8, but by the looks of it this was always coming both in the books and earlier seasons.

I don't think i have ever posted a comment anywhere but i have to say u crushed that explanation. 10mins ago i was 100% in the negative column but now i too am optimistic. It hasn't been perfect but ending a series like this is tough. Way way harder than say the Sopranos or Breaking Bad. Great video.

HBO offered to fund GoT for 10 full seasons which is what the story deserved, what the characters deserved, what the cast deserved and what the fans deserved but B&W decided to wrap it all up in 7 seasons which became 8. They made their coffin and now they must lie in it.

Unquestionable it was rushed 6 seasons of evil Queen Cersie, 1.5 episodes for evil Dany. When Dany hears the bells is when Rhaegal should of died. That would fix the issues.

I just wish they built up to Daeny's madness. D and D already said they did not want to cave in to anything the fans wanted. That speaks volumes. I do not mind Arya killing the Night King or Daeny going mad, but we needed more episodes. What were these last 7 years for? They totally annihilated both Daeny's and Jon's arc. It just breaks my heart.

Dany’s apparent 180 didn’t bother me. It was how Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion all seemed way out of character because the writers wanted to reset the board. Especially Jaime saying he didn’t care about the innocents when he said he killed the Mad King for that.

As one of the many that viewed Daenerys as an anti-hero or potential villan years ago, and recieved much abuse for it, Daeranys' choice was sad, but not completly unexpected.

Honestly, I think the storyline makes perfect senses for all the reasons you guys pointed out about Daenerys through the seasons. Problems is that we are used to stories with defined heroes and villains, and for the past few seasons those figures were quite prominent in the figure of the Night King as a villain, for example, vs Jon as a hero. But Game of Thrones's true essence was the story of a group of complex characters who did good and bad things. At times they were honorable and good, and in other moments they did terrible things.

Honestly, I feel like people are overreacting to this when the problem is smack dab in the center of our field of view: it was rushed. If we had AT LEAST one full season devoted to Dany's descent then the toil of the Bells would have much more clarity. And, like Erik said, there's really no one person to blame (though most of it can arguably be pointed towards D&D).
