There are 7 officials on the field plus a person watching every play in a booth who can contact the crew for a review. The amount of calls they get right must be mentioned as well. Consider there are 16 games a week and they average around 80+ plays per game so there are over a thousand opportunities to be right or wrong.

@@ericthompson9199 I never said it was perfect. I just mean that of the possible outcomes, the errors are percentage wise very small. That does not remove the enormous impact of one wrong call.

The rule that concerns the kick holder and the towel, was brought about back in the 70s when New England was playing in a game where they had multiple inches of snow on the field. During a time-out, before New England was going to kick a field goal, one of the grounds keepers drove a small tractor, with a snow blade, across the field, making the area that the ball would be kicked from, snow-free. There wasn't any penalty that could be charged at that time. But, it was put in place soon after. This falls under the same intention.

There are 7 officials down on the field in a NFL game. There is also 1 official in the replay booth to make decisions on replay reviews. Referee - Lines up behind the QB to his right Umpire - Lines up behind the QB to his left Down Judge and Line Judge are both on the line of scrimmage on each side of the field Field Judge and Side Judge are both on the sidelines about 20 yards downfield The back Judge is in the middle of the field, about 25 yards down the field

You guys should really watch "This week in Sportsball" on the channel urinatingtree. The guy puts out a recap of every game of the week with the score and highlights and its quite funny too

I hate the roughing the passer rules *SO MUCH* .Every time a QB gets hurt, they write some half baked rule making it impossible to hit them. No hitting them high. No hitting them low. No landing on them when you tackle them. If anyone else gets hurt? Too fucking bad. Your position doesn’t matter. It’s such horse shit. I really haven’t watched the NFL at all since they wrote the “Rodgers Rule” where you basically aren’t allowed to sack the QB because he broke his collar bone on a routine hit. College football is where it’s at now. The NFL has torpedoed the quality of the game in pursuit of protecting EXCLUSIVELY QB and no one else.

Mike’s Patriots (sorry, Mike) got away with altering the playing field to the kicker’s advantage in December 1982 when a convict on work release plowed snow off the field (the Snowplow Game). He said “what are they gonna do, throw me in jail?” Years later, it became a rule that no one may alter the conditions to their advantage. Hence the Bears penalty. Still bogus, if you ask me.

The rule about the pass rusher landing with their weight is that you can't drive the qb into the ground, which he clearly didn't do on that play. Remember, these are all bad calls and penalties can't be reviewed

Regarding the receiver and defender in the end zone. The defender has as much right to play the ball, as the receiver does. But, in order to be considered as "playing the ball" they have to be looking back for the ball. If there's an even amount of pushing and shoving, between the two guys, but only the offensive player is trying to play the ball, usually the defender is going to get called for the foul.

When the Quarterbacks slide the second their knee or butt hit the ground the play is over, and hitting the QB in that situation is always a late hit.

When a player slides on his knee he’s giving himself up and ball is dead on the spot… hitting him afterwards is a penalty, although that one was soft

Just finished watching the Colts vs Chiefs game. There were some huge calls that game. The Chiefs would’ve won but one of their players drew a flag for talking shit to the Colts QB which lost the Chiefs the game. Go Colts! ⚪️🔵

The refs also have post-game accountability system that allows/disallows bonus of both professional opportunities (high-profile/high-importance/playoff games) and money.

The officials on the field review the plays with the league office.

Offensive lineman can't move until the ball is moved. If so it's a 5 yard (false start) penalty on the Offensive side. Defense can move any which way the want. If they go past the ball and get back to their side before the offense moves...no flag. If they are past the ball and the ball is snapped...they are offsides-5 yard penalty againstthe defense...BUT the offense can keep operating like nothing happened. If the offense makes a big play (the offense will decline the off-sides 5 yard penalty and take their big play). If the play is a dude....the offense will take the 5 yards penalty on the defense. Also if the defense crosses the line of scrimmage (the neutral zone). A line man can move (react to the defense crossing the line), making it a neutral zone infraction on the defense (5 yard penalty).

Regarding the towel wipedown of the field...lookup "snowplow game" Miami at New England in the early 80s. Snowing like crazy. A snowplow was used during stoppages of play to clear up the yardlines. Right before a game winning field goal attempt for the Pats, the snowplow driver swerved to clear up a spot for the kick. Kick was good and the Pats won. The snowplow move was clearly illegal.

The towel one from the Bears 49ers game is such a strange one. I didn’t know it was a rule and people who are a lot smarter than me about NFL rules didn’t know either. Apparently the players doing it didn’t even know it was against the rules.

One thing you will learn about modern NFL. They treat the QBs like they are fragile babies. So if you pretty much look at them wrong now it is a penalty. It's one of the reasons Brady has lasted so long. 20 years ago he would have been retired by now.
