Great, thorough and thoughtful review. Like you, I love Nicks Boots. Great quality, great people and a great company. I'm happy to be able to support them. I have the Urban Logger variant in 8" and in brown waxed flesh. I think you are onto something with the benefits of having the higher shaft on top of the lugged sole and 2" heel. One thing I have noticed about the Wickett & Craig leather is that is quite stiff. It makes a stiff boot even stiffer. I think this may be true for most vegetable tanned leathers. My Robert boots also on 55 last, but with moderate height heel and V-bar sole. I wouldn't say that it feels more or less stable underfoot than the 2" heel on lugged sole.

I'm curious how you would feel about Nick's re-heeling your boot to modern (lower) heel stack? You mentioned the Urban Drifter a few times; although that's changing the last to a HNW as well as the heel height. There doesn't seem to be any reviews with the same boot at different heel heights. I know I prefer the arch support with the 55 last, but I like to looks of a lower heel stack and block profile for a more casual/everyday boot.

My first pair of Nicks were a pair of “ready to ship” BuilderProx in my Red Wing size. They fit perfectly. But, I understand your comments regarding difficulty walking on uneven ground, particularly walking down steep slopes. A few months later I bought a pair “Officer” boots built on the HNW last. I found these to be a little snug in the toe. They have a #3 toe. They were not tight. I just like a little toe wiggle room. A year later I found my favorite last, the 11067, when I bought a pair of “Prospectors”. These have the #4 “sprung toe”, which is probably similar to a Munson last. When it comes to boot height, I prefer an 8-inch boot. I like the fit of my Red Wing 8-inch 877s over my 6-inch 875s. My 4th pair of Nicks were MTO 8-inch boots on the 11067 last. I use the shorter heel option and a dogger heel. This is what is perfect for me.

Oh, yeah. Why do I need a variety of boots? I’m basically a construction worker. I’m an electrical engineer. I must always carry spare clothing and footwear everywhere I go.

I like the 8 inch for a work boot. I am certainly interested in the digger heel, you’ll be seeing that on the channel. Beautiful rugged boot. I'm very happy with my Nicks. Question; my leather laces that came with a pair are very thin and wearing out quick. Do you recommend a certain source to buy replacement laces?

@@GentlemansJourney Ironlace for synthetic; the black turns slightly silver and they can cut you if you lace too quickly (as me how I know) but they don't "relax" when tied so you don't have to retie/tighten midshift.

You could even consider getting a resole on these boots to a Vibram 430 mini lug, and it would be much more sleek, but still be versatile. To your point about the heel profile, I took my Franks on a deer hunt this year hiking up rocky hillsides. I loved the arch support, and the boots are beautiful, but that heel did give me quite a bit of instability hiking up hillsides that I did not expect. I am considering going a different route for hiking/hunting trips.

It sounds like its the sock liner (to cover the nails from the heel stack) on top of the leather insole that you're having an issue with. NIck's sock liner extends farther into the footbed than any other brand I own. That ledge/transition from liner to the insole seems to be a crap shoot on some boots. I'm only on my second day of wearing my Nicks x Parkhurst Falcons and one of my initial thoughts the first time I put them on was that I liked that their liner extended farther in. Among the five pairs of Parkhurst in my collection I can only feel it on one or two of them. Sometimes they're not glued down solidly either and I have to be careful pulling the boots off because it feels like I might start peeling up the edges. Anyway, I was going to recommend the inserts from Dale's Leatherworks as someone else suggested in the comments below. He offers them in three different thicknesses of leather including a thin version which shouldn't take up too much space. The wool inserts you mentioned look interesting too.
@GentlemansJourney
@GentlemansJourney 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the comment! You understand it exactly. So many companies are able to get one nice liner. I’ll definitely check out those leather liners in the future. Man, sounds like a very respectable collection of boots you’ve got there! Cheers 🥾🥾

I wanted to get a pair of Iron Rangers in a brown as a everyday wear boot but read that Nick's Americanas are the best then I see these; not a cap toe and the logger heel gives these a dressier feel (for a tank of a boot). Next will be another pair of Nick's (I have their Tacticals for work) but hmmm, Urban Logger or Americana. Agree with your assessment on different lasts; the NWN works for me but haven't worn the 55 (heck might like that one better).

The one huge downside of these heritage PNW work boots is the extreme weight. 6 pounds is almost twice the weight of a modern mountain boot and you feel the difference on hikes. It's like lugging around ankle weights after 3 miles. I love Nicks boots and have owned 4 pairs, but the 6 lb weight is a glaring issue that might be a deal breaker for most guys. I find myself cringing when I wear my Nicks to the trail, because I know I'll be dragging and tired by the end of the hike. Why bring the excess weight just for extra durability? The old saying is true, "One pound on your feet equals five pounds on your back." Well, that's 30 extra pounds if you wear your Nicks.
@eingames9931
@eingames9931 8 ай бұрын
After slowly destroying my ankles over decades with inferior footwear, I have found that my Nicks are as light as my other boots when on my feet. And I have worn them all day long, where the others have a limit of about 8 hours(I think because my arches get tired of them). If you don't like the extra weight, stick to those modern boots and buy them every year or two. I'll keep my Nicks and they will outlast me.
@GentlemansJourney
@GentlemansJourney 8 ай бұрын
Got some great points! I’d say the hiking community would certainly agree. I think that’s what a year in these did for me is teach that they are not everyday boots but work boots so the urban side no longer makes sense to me. And if they are work I might just go with a cheaper work leather? Then use this leather on some more casual boots. Any any rate, it’s a journey. Cheers.

@@GentlemansJourney right on man, I appreciate it. I actually have the 1964 Brown smooth for all three pair of boots I have from Nick's. I've actually been debating on getting the double stuffed Buck Brown because of your videos and Instagram photos of those boots that you have. I think they look awesome and I love the look of that leather🤙🏻 I almost forgot, I'm also interested in the Brown waxed flesh. So it's kind of been a back and forth between that and the double stuffed Buck Brown, kind of like how it was for you when you were picking your first pair of Nick's but I think both leathers just looks awesome.
