How to cast a silver ring using cuttlefish bone.
Cuttlebone casting technique is simple and cheap to use.
Cuttlefish bone casting a silver ring can produce interesting textures and varied results.
Warning Casting with cuttlefish bone is a rather smelly process, not recommended for anyone with a workspace in their home. It may end up smelling like a fish market on a hot summers day.

I have cuttlebone,and I have been wanting to remake my wedding ring.Searching for ideas,I really like this! I like simpler ways to make jewelry,and really like natural textures.This will be a plan for sure!

Hi Debbie, me too I love natural textures. The results can vary a bit with this technique depending on what part of the bone you take the impression from. The one drawback with this method is the appalling lingering stink that it can create … best done outdoors if you can … N

Can't believe how well you've matched and blended that seam on the narrower band, the ring looks basically cast as it is! On the thicker one the seam itself is just as invisible and even if the pattern doesn't match it's blended beautifully and adds to the character. Thanks for these videos!

thanks for your encouragement Rudy, I never know what people think of my have a go hobby adventures. The narrow band worked well using the dead centre of the bone, came out very symmetrical and made it easy to blend the ends together … all the best … Nick

In the pet stores around my area the size of all cuttlefish bone they had was too small for silver casting. Spent lots of time looking for big ones and ended up buying them from Sepia King. Imho the best I found so far.

You’re right about being fun to play. good idea to cast patterns for future sand casting use. I have tried VoiceOvers but being rather camera shy it’s not an easy process, so much simpler just to stick to voiceless with a few text words … cheers … N

Since the lower side is flat (and you don't want ripples inside a ring anyway), the second half of the mould could also be a charcoal soldering block. The charcoal would be reusable for several castings (so you save one cuttlefish bone) and the inside of the ring would require a bit less cleanup.
@Nickscreativestuff
@Nickscreativestuff 2 ай бұрын
Hi Torsten, thanks for the suggestion. I have used a charcoal block in the manner you suggest and it does work very well. For this video I was trying to demonstrate the different textures achievable from cuttlefish and I do like the light texture gained on the inside of the ring from the flat piece of bone … N

Could this be be cast in one piece?
@Nickscreativestuff
@Nickscreativestuff 4 күн бұрын
Hi Buckley, there are a few different methods that can be used with cuttlefish bone. Casting a ring in one piece is definitely a technique commonly used. Some shaped models work well whereas others are not so good and troublesome flashing can occur in places that are hard to clean up. One other thing to take into account is the texture you’re trying to achieve, this varies dramatically depending on what part of the bone is being used … N
