Well, LTM or copies The Japanese copies are top notch like Leotax, Canon and Nicca But a good serviced Zorki and FED do shoot the same tooo When you consider Nikon S, You should also consider Contax and Kiev

What makes a good deal for a Leica too is how recent its last CLA was. No point in going for the cheapest and ending with $500 CLA and repair right after.

I have a cheaper M6 and it's vertical adjustment is just a tiny bit off, but other than that it functions perfectly. And I've spoken to a lot of M6 shooters and some got theirs even cheaper than what I got mine for and noone had to send theirs in. I see that there might be some problems with some cameras out there, but honestly the camera is so well built that you really don't need to worry about it too much

With out a doubt the M39 Leica bodies are plentiful and quite affordable, of course not including various rare examples, but the Canon models are very good too. Most examples of M39 from Leica and the Japanese market can be had from anywhere between $90 to a few thousand on the secondhand market. The Soviet examples are really good to check out as well, however I always try and advise my friends that the later built models can have more quality issues than the earlier examples. But for a good price you could also choose Voigtlander Bessa or one of the other M mount bodies from the likes of Minolta, Konica or Zeiss Ikon. But if one is only primarily shooting a single focal length, then nothing hurts looking into a fixed lens rangefinder, that opens up a huge slough of choices. Great video as always Nico!

You guys pretty much nailed it. Another thing to think about is value down the road. I think my M2 is worth almost exactly what I paid for it years ago. In the last 20 years I have seen the value of other rangefinder brands fluctuate wildly. Years ago, Canon LTM cameras traded at very high prices, now it looks like they are practically given away.

@@NicosPhotographyShow Agreed, the Canon LTM cameras are super cheap. I don't understand it. Most Leicas have around 200,000 issued, the M3 in the U.S. is typically $3000 with a lens while a Canon LTM, under 10,000 issued can be had for around $200 with a lens.Most were made between 1950 to 1965. I live in Los Angeles, everyone wants a Leica rangefinder, its like a piece of jewelry to show off. It clearly is a fashion accessory. Wherever the hipsters are, you'll surely see a number of Leicas. In fact, I can't recall ever seeing a hipster with any other type of rangefinder. No Contax, Canon, Bessa. (BTW, the Canon Canonet, GIII is a very capable rangefinder with a couple meter and automatic option often found for under $200).

50mm is my go-to lens, but I went with the M2 over the M3 because I wear glasses. I can't see the framelines in the M3 with my glasses on.

Honestly, if all I were going to shoot are in the 35mm-50mm focal lenghts, I'd really rather get a fixed lens rangefinder camera or a 6x6 TLR. Especially if I can't afford to have some of the better M and m39 mount lenses made by Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander etc. It makes almost no sense to get an M3 and put a Jupiter 8 50/2 on it all the time. Some of the lenses on those fixed lens rangefinders approach the Leica-like optical qualities while being significantly cheaper. On top of that, you usually gain a leaf shutter which only costs you one stop at the faster end of the shutter speeds but is even quieter than any of the M and m39 mount cameras made by anyone. You don't get the crisp and clean viewfinder of the M3 in any of those compacts but it's the lens that takes the photo, not the viewfinder. I was quite happy with my Minolta 7s (not 7sII) which I had bought for 15$ from an antique store. Yes the viewfinder is dimmer but the focus is still easy and accurate and for 15$, I'm not going to complain too much. Then on the other end of the spectrum, I could get a Rolleicord Vb for somewhere around 200-300$ in mint condition. The one we have right now actually cost us 60$ and then we paid another 60$ or so to bring it into top mechanical and optical condition. While appearing a bit bulkier, the looks are quite deceiving and it's only 100 grams or so heavier than a Leica M3 with a 50/2 Summicron and the combination of the excellent optics used on those cameras and the 3.6 times larger film area leaves pretty much any 35mm film camera in the dust. Seriously, it's not even funny how much better even the cheaper medium format TLR cameras are compared to some of the best Leica M lenses. And again, you get a much more quieter shutter and an even more subtle and cute camera that even the random people you encounter on the street will enjoy looking at. I still very much enjoy using my Leica M2 with the Voigtlander 35/2.5 on the street and I know I'll enjoy them even more when I get a 90mm Tele-Elmarit-M. Short teles are really underappreciated in street photography and one of the real strenghts of the M system is the ability to use very compact and high quality short telephotos very discretely and carry them around all day without any hassle.

Jupiter 8 and Jupiter 3 are two of my favorite 50mms, they are cheap, that doesn't mean they are bad. They use old style sonnar structure so they won't be crispy sharp, same as more pricy zm 50mm f1.5 sonnar, but it works for some people

@@NicosPhotographyShow I'd say it's easily as well built as any of the Canons of this era, probably close to the build quality of the Barnack Leicas too, and the added convenience of the advance lever (instead of a knob) makes a huge difference in day-to-day shooting.

The “winning” Leica was probably a Leica M6 because it has a meter and popular users have highly recommended it. Unfortunately, I get the impression that the only “alternative” for a Leica is a brief vacation with one (a rental) rather than another camera. I say that because I’ve seen many poor souls go through dozens of rangefinders before buying a copy. Nikon S cameras are so good looking it hurts. I want to try one.

Certain Exposures if the meter makes a camera a winner, I guess you can say goodbye to 70%, if not more, of the analog cameras. Less for you, more for me 😛

@Dretelejr
@Dretelejr 4 жыл бұрын
Yes they are, provided they've been serviced by a competent technician. I own one (Zorki-6) and it hasn't failed on me, and it's been with me in trips as my go-to 35mm camera. Soviet cameras do have a reputation for being unreliable cameras compared to the Japanese ones due to the fit and finished not up to "Leica" standards, but if you get a serviced copy, it won't fail on you - as do most mechanical cameras, they need a little TLC. They are the most budget friendly alternative to the Leica simply because they are plentiful, and the lenses are top notch, not as much as German-made ones, but top notch nonetheless.
