Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work - such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.

So that is how you pronounce 'Anaximander!' I have been butchering his name for years. Thanks for this series an the early Greek philosophers. It is excellent.

I think most people pronounce his name as if he evolves into Anaximeleon and then Anaxizard

@@untimelyreflections Really? I always pronounced the 'i' as ''e' as if it were a French name. lol Love your takes on Nietzsche, and the rest. You have a magnificent voice too. A radio voice. I guess your background in music helps with the sound quality. Thanks. btw have you checked out Acid Horizon. Their videos are a bit uneven, but I like the Stuart Kendall ones on Bataille. I also think it would be neat to think about Cormac McCarthy and Nietzsche. I am reading Blood Meridian right now. Cheers!

Ever cover Bradley, or read Appearance & Reality? Some ostensible parallels with F. H. Bradley; hie takes on "the Absolute" and especially its unintelligiblity. Together with Schopenhauer: Timothy Sprigge describes us excellently on Schopenhauer as "delusively individualized throbs of craving". The question is just, why this _principium_ _individuationis_ ? [What's it really doing, one of the big questions].

Yes I waa going to note the parallels with schopenhaurian metaphysics - of an unaudited will with only itself to feed upon, resulting in forms continually going into and coming out of existence. Of courrse, commensurate with buddhist metaphysics as well! Good stuff.
