You’ve just got to love how he keeps the game moving under any and all situations…I think the refs aren’t credited enough for how good they make the game sometimes.

My favourite ever, and apologies I can't remember which match it was ... a line out throw went badly wrong and Nigel's comment was "I'm straighter than that throw". Golden

That was a Harlequins match. Dave Ward was the Hooker. More than that I can't recall I'm afraid.

@@WhiteWolf-lm7gj Very difficult position hooker, not for the faint of heart. Funny story. A news item on Tom Youngs, ex England and Leicester hooker, appeared on an American website. I think it had been translated into another language then back to English again by a computer program. Something like "ex England prostitute, Tom Youngs retires". How we laughed.

Such an amazing guy and referee. Always the right words to keep everything under control and some of the shrewdest lines ever. The respect for the ref on rugby’s pitches is something that should be shown to the kids in school!

Nigel Owen.. the referee who is firm and fair and doesn’t start the clock when he has told a captain to go speak to his men…unlike certain French officials we can mention.

He's a great lad off field too, met him at Chelsea Farmer's Show once, he was eating a burger and holding a beer, he happily posed with me for a picture, a great man and role model!

I'm am American, pretty new to rugby but I an about to start my third year of football (soccer) refereeing. We need more of this type of authority in football! This was so fun to watch

He wouldn’t able to do that in an Old Firm Derby or Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce match 🤣. Footballs a harder sport to referee as the rules are very vague in points and left up to interpretation. There’s also a lot more money riding on games.

It's a question of culture. The culture of rugby is one where the referee is much more respected than that of football.

The Stuart Hog dive to this day is still super embarrassing. Rarely happens at all but if it does it should be an immediately yellow if the ref deems it to be a deliberate dive

What I love about rugby is play acting is not tolerated. Stuart is a brilliant player and he’ll know not to do that again

Respect...... Professional Rugby is walking a tightrope with this word and the "professional foul". Need Ref`s like Nigel (now he has retired) to help the players navigate their way thru cheap temptations

I wish we had proper referees like Nigel in football. Rugby is lightyears ahead in officiating.

and players respect a lot rugby ref, with a hint of fear to keep them in line, as things can be heated while playing. But clearly football needs some harsher rules and refereeing to clean it from cheats, divers and low blows

Yes. I played rugby 10 years. We never had a fight and even a referee of 70 Kg arounded by 10 players with 115 Kg was respected. "This is no soccer".

Ahh, that’s why I love rugby: there's still respect in the game, from both players and refs! In what other sport can a ref say something like "play nice" and the players not only listen but they apologize too! Hehe.

This guy is a phenomenal ref. I don't watch or play rugby at all and just ended up on this video because of the algorithm, but these few minutes have me wishing all refs in all sports were like this.

Even if I'm french and a bit of a chauvinist (aren't we all), you cannot NOT love Mr. Owens. Spot on and fair with his decisions on the field, a frank way of speaking, seems like a really likable human overall (on the field at least, I don't know outside of it). Really missed for sure...

Nobody reffing in the history of this magnificent Game to touch Mr N.O. ~ his temperament and grip of the moment, his immediate savvy unto the essence of ‘right now’, is much more than super brilliant. Entertainer per excellénce and a very stern presence on the park, without killing or restraining the ‘wild freedom’ great players long for ultimately… Must be the best sense of humour around in the Game. A world tribute to leading refereeing ~ COMPLIMÉNT. (Ps note: He will be sorely missed, especially in World Cup Matches…Touché NO⁉️)

Got to admit, I'm not really a rugby fan, although I will watch the Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup. I will also admit though,that I like Nigel as a ref.I would have loved to have seen him at work in a football match, severely rebuking those players who love to cheat and intimidate.

Now, for the first time, I've seen the "Dive like that again" incident. That was nothing, as soon as he kicked the ball the player tried to not hit him. It was a little love tap.
