Yup. Pretty Good summery. The biggest ideas got little screen time and the most important plotline (the fate of mankind and earth) was left unfinished. How could they not give a better conclusion on what happened to earth?? I'd say its an open ended season to allow season 2, but (a) i dont think theres gonna be season 2, and (b) this show needed one more episode. Just 1. Not a full season.

For me, the whole thing started to fall apart when the baby disintegrated. It made no sense and was never explained, and everything else just sort of fell apart after that moment. The reveal and resolution of Cynthia (when Lommie locked her away) would have been fine if they'd then pivoted more strongly toward the Volcryn and it's effects on the crew's psychology. In fact it would have been great if they'd brought the Volcryn and Cynthia stories together by having the crew utilise the latter to help resolve the former. But that didn't happen and the Volcryn "effect" was never fully realised, which left those last few episodes feeling pretty flat.

It wasn't even a probe though. It was utterly inexplicable. She took a voice recorder, stuck it in a little cylinder with no beacon or propulsion method, and dumped it via a waste chute. Nobody would ever find that, in a million years. She dumped it when they were way out in the depths of space, and it was a tiny voice recorder. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT!? IT MADE NO SENSE WHATSOEVER! I mean hell, at the time, they were burning on a trajectory to intercept the alien snot blob. The thing she ejected would have continued on that trajectory, moving away from the Solar system.

I read the book just yesterday, and was excited to watch the series, because i really enjoyed reading it. They literally took a 130 page short story and took almost EVERYTHING interesting out of the story. The first 1 and a half pages was more interesting than the whole show. Hearing about the passage of time and how other planets and other races on those planets have old stories about this creepy alien ship and building this sense that theres plently of life around the galaxy, including (thought to be) long dead alien races like the Hrangans, and talked about all these other ineterest planets, as if earth is old news and a almost pointless lump of dirt now that they can travel around to other habitable planets. Not to mention, giving them slightly more interesting names...you know....what with it being the fucking future...a minute into the show just thinking "who the boring earth fuck is Karl??" and then the motivation of the story.. ohh earths dying (check) first time meeting alien (check) everyone at eachothers throat for un needed tension (check) yup, that checks all the marks for things iv literally seen a million times over in every single sci fi show or movie. Whats wrong with having a guy super obsessed with finding these aliens? and a academic crew behind him feeling the same way??? That's what interested me early on in the book. THE MYSTERY OF AN OBSESSED PERSON'S LIFE WORK. Not the standard wham bam thank you mam finished in 3 minutes "earth is dying" bullshit. Fuck this show, fuck modern tv. Taking anything remotely fantastical and grounding it back down to the boring same cliche's and standard plots. The imagine i drew up when reading it was so much more interesting. They described Melantha as a head taller and bulky as fuck, contantly saying she was the upgraded version and whatnot. Making this image of this badass 7ft tall weightlifer looking (not bodybuilder...weightlifter) but instead its just a slender slightly muscled average height lady? Where the beefy warrior aspect of her? or the whole crew general. There's no need to make all the crew instantly at eachothers throat and all hate on the L1, in the book, sure Thale was a bit weird and people where slightly nervous around him, but they would all sit around a table and casually have dinner and whatnot? Why the fuck would you need to lock him away and turn him into a complete pyscho? And ofcourse the worst part. THE WHOLE POINT WAS THAT THE SPIRIT OF THE CAPTAINS MOTHER IS CONTROLLING THE SHIP, ALONG WITH THE CAPTAIN HELPING, TRYING MORE, TO MAKE SURE SHE DOSENT DO ANY HARM TO THE OTHER PASSENGERS, WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE HUNDRED OF PEOPLE WALKING AROUND DOING POINTLESS SHIT? THE WHOLE POINT WAS THAT SHE WAS A LONER, SHE DIDNT WAS PEOPLE, SHE MADE THE SHIP SO SHE COULD OPERATE IT BY HER SELF, AND SUDDENLY ITS NOW A FUCKING SPACE STATION WITH HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ON???? You get this much more creepy vibe in the book. It's only 9 people, and while all friendly and open with eachother (faar more than in the show) there's also this slightly side eye look everyone has of eachother, and they're on a small ship with weird things happening. Not a fucking valley of a space station. Sorry about that, i just really needed to vent after watching the show. Make D&D look like some kinda TV wizards in comparison. Steer clear of anyone involved on this. They turned a 130 page, interesting short story into a bland boring same old 10 part cancelled after 1 season sci fi channel special.

I just binged on netflix and enjoyed it until the last two episodes. Somehow there are no comms on the ship and you must speak face to face, Mel becomes so wishy washy that after traveling millions of miles to get 3 feet from the destination and try to convince people to turn back because it could be dangerous which they knew all along. Three minutes later she says we have come to far so let's do it. The psychic who can read everyone's mind all the time never tells anyone about people sabotaging themselves, the two men who try to destroy everything somehow become two of the men to help save it. I could go on, but I need to find the writers and end their careers before they cause anymore egregious stupidity.

GRRM's novella is actually really great, it's a shame they neutered it. The volcryn doesn't directly cause people to go insane, it just takes psionic abilities to over 9000 and things devolve from there. A Cronenberg Nightflyers adaptation would have been straight up incredible.

I think the most interesting thing about the series was not the series itself but more the psychological breakdown of the characters. They all became very self serving and narcissistic at some point after being on this ship for so long and seemed to literally forget the whole point of being there. After a while all the characters seemed to only be interested getting what they wanted and finding pleasure instead of looking at the bigger picture. The situations that took places only really served to show everyone’s mental break down on the ship as they got closer to the goal. Even when they found the other ship floating in space all if them had gone crazy as well. Then while the ships crew was losing their mind, they had the nerve to say the women happily living as cannibals floating in space were crazy. The scariest part of this series was the people themselves and how self obsessed and lacking in ability to have compassion and understanding of each others emotions and personal needs. Seemed like the only character that had some sort of emotional functionality was Lonnie and she was trying to escape being in the middle of everyone’s drama. I didn’t hate the show but there were some stupid plot holes. Like if the baby died cause it was infected with black mold why didn’t the mom die first? How did the baby get infected if the mom wasn’t infected. Smh… that whole episode made no damn since. And where did it come from in the first place. The mold would have had to been contracted from somewhere outside that room for the baby to get infected to begin with. Smh… it is what it is. I wouldn’t mind reading the original story.

So many gaping holes and utter nonsense. This is what happens when executives demand a scare every 7 minutes to fit the commercial break cycle. Tried to fit a 2018 episodic story in an 90’s tv formula. Could be that this story was written in the 80’s before RR found his footing as a writer so let’s just capitalize on his name kind of thing. on the baby part. its mentioned in the episode that space voyage protocols "all birth must be terminated if were consent in space" and right afterward we see why. the mold inside the baby mutated using his cells becoming some form of a disease. so yeah that make some form of sense. and rowan blaming the aliens for that is perfectly natural. for rowan snapping, also make sense. you just imagine that you build a life and out of nowhere you lost everything in less then an hour, and then imagine that he could have saved some of that if your friend gave more of a damn. and now imagine that he concluded its all your fault in the first place and your psyche cannot simply accept that. and btw Goerge RR Martin has written the book the show is based on. he did not work in this show

Okay, thought I was the only one that found the show confusing. I only watched it because George R.R Martin. One of my biggest issues are the characters and plot. There isn't enough character development, it's like the rushed through the whole thing. Maybe I expected too much? The plot just doesn't make sense, at the end I was like so what happened? Don't get me wrong I like complex plots that make you think, but idk felt like a mess, and I didn't know what to make of it myself. Glad I stumbled onto this video. I literally was lost for the whole season? Or was this the whole tv show? So many questions, and it's like the further the show progresses the more questions that arise. Maybe someone can make out what the tv show is trying to show? I'm kind of tempt to rewatch it maybe I missed somethings? Idk lol

Glad I'm not the only one left wondering wtf was up with the spore-infested baby. The entire show was -- hey, here's this crazy thing with no explanation and people acting crazy because reasons. I get that the alien force makes people crazy, but that still doesn't explain the deadly spores, the time-warped probe with organic components, and the dimension-hopping leader. BTW, what exactly is he going to do in an alternate reality where his daughter is alive when he finds out his alternate self is on the Nightflyer in that universe also? Another thing... if Roy was created to be a living heir because AI has no rights, what's the point of having him if he lives in a test tube and remote-controls a robot or shows up by hologram? Can't the AI also remote control the robot or holograms just as easily?

Thanks for adequately expressing my thoughts and feelings about the show. Right after finishing I went to look for other people's reviews and found a similarly critical review on a german news outlet. Under it one user comment that was praising the show. That comment made me so angry that I made an account to write my own comment, thrashing the show. My biggest complaint was that it felt like a cheap soap opera, with all the sci-fi just there for background decoration.

This series was a heap of everywhere, but I must say that the concepts in this movie were fun. I.E. the A.I., the porting concept, the Eagle, and Roy. Of course, I do agree that these concepts were entirely too underdeveloped and underexplained.

Star Brand This is not based on a movie, nor was that movie original. It was another "adaptation" of a 1980 novella by George RR Martin - though it looks like both the movie and the show took huge liberties with the text. Also, Melantha's character is black in the novella and was whitewashed in the movie.

This was the biggest pile of shite I've seen in a long time. A completely convoluted and atrocious mess with no payoff in the finale. I like a good sci-fi show story for the willing suspension of my disbelief but a lot of it makes no sense and not on purpose, just terrible direction and plot with the likes of a character murdering people in a homicidal breakdown on a contained spaceship, then in the next episode he's alright and no one ever mentions it again. I mean what?! It's currently rated 6.4 on IMDB which I think is about 3.4 more than it deserves. I wasted 10 hours of my life watching this garbage and I'm pretty angry about it...this is my deep space warning to you...Stay Away.

I kinda liked it, but you are right about every single deficiency you mentioned. Also another one: What was up with that "warning" that Athana sends out before suiciding?! Why did she have to send that out, even so much that she chose it over defending herself?! Later it is said that she killed herself so that the mission could _continue_, to break the feedback loop. If her suicide was the solution, why send out a warning? And who is going to pick it up anyway, as they are so close to the Volcryn and steering right into them? It seems like that was just placed in there to spoil a bad ending in the opening scene that would actually never happen, which of course is nothing but aggravating once you get to it in episode 9.

Just finished it, it was difficult to get through it, so many frustrating plotholes or stupid things. One that you didn't mention is Why did Roy offer the trip in the first place?!?! If Cynthia didn't want to go, she who's screaming at him all the time, basically controls the ship, why and how did he do that?!?!?!?! Another thing that bothered me was the "protocol" that said the all space pregnancies were supposed to be terminated... in a colony ship? And no one is really surprised that she's preganant, there's equipment for it and a doctor, how is that a protocol??

Most space horror movies (all?) are like this. People that are going to be sent in a space mission are supposed to be the best individuals humanity can produce. The smartest, healthier, the toughest, most focused. Ofcourse even astronauts have faults, but it's really hard to keep watching it when the characters are so stupid and make the worst decisions possible, constantly.

This series of break downs reminds me of a movie with similarities. Except the ship's AI was a real woman, her son is flesh and had never been outside the ship his whole life. He was quarantined to the Captain's chamber because his immune system was never exposed to bacteria or viruses. AI mommy went crazy and killed all but one of the passengers. Surviving female passenger and "son" leave the ship at the end.

Does the 1987 version have So-many-holes!? You forgot to mention that the L3 was so powerful that her boyfriend couldn't touch her without his eyes bleeding, but, crazy axe guy was able to throw her around the room without one jolt?! WHATEVER. The technology was absurd, why wouldn't an emergency manual override switch be somewhere easily accessible?! Why are there floatation tanks that cannot be opened from the inside manually? WHAT is up with the medical scenes? How can they be so far behind where we are now (didn't try to resuscitate the baby or do an emergency C-section) But can cure serious burns overnight? Why did they say that the L1s heart would fail with a barely elevated heart rate of 110 and an oddly ideal blood pressure of 120/80? WTH was up with those man rape machines? How were they supposed to work?

I believe Rowan going crazy is linked to Agatha not being able to control her developing L3 powers. They mention an L3 made a bunch of people go crazy and that's why everyone hates L3's. Once Agatha kills herself Rowan goes back to normal. Although why it only seemed to affect Rowan is another mystery.

I saw some really silly plot holes... Like Cynthia calling Auggie a "glorified" truck driver. Like why would she do that? And Auggie being second in command, doesn't know that the lifeboat only holds one person? LOL. But I could have lived with all the plot holes... until the ending of the last episode? So many movie or show endings have pissed me off before, but this one takes the cake! Without a doubt, the STUPIDEST ending of all time.
