Looking at the Nikon F100 SLR film camera + Nikon F100 vs Nikon F80, Nikon F100 vs Nikon F4/ F5 + Nikon F100 vs Nikon F501 . Video includes Nikon F100 portraits, a camera specs general overview, Nikon F100 film loading and some reasons you may consider this camera compared to other popular Nikon SLR cameras. The F100 Nikon film camera works great as an auto-focus Nikon SLR body if I need something smaller and lighter than the Nikon F5 but I prefer manual focus bodies I think. Check out the Nikon F80 video as a Nikon F100 film camera alternative and the Nikkor lenses, autofocus or manual focus.

I took one of my F100 cameras to Vietnam in 2014. I used the 50mm 1.8 D on it and shot 10 rolls of TRI-X 400 film. This camera has the best meter I have ever used it just nails every shot. light weight accurate metered a zillion lenses to choose from.

I have the F5 and F100 and now the F6. The F6 viewfinder is the best I have ever seen. The focus confirmation is HUGE, easy to see and in the lower viewfinder bar near the center. Makes mf lenses a breeze. When you hit back button focus, the focus spot lights up bright red easy to find and/or relocate as focusing. The f100 view finder isn't as bright and the information isn't as large... these old eyes appreciate that. I don't use aperture priority, but understand the meter in the F6 is near infallible so will give it a try for street.

Hello again, Matt: Interesting that you mentioned the N80 film door hinges. I would call them the latches with the hinge being on the far right of the film compartment door. Those little latches held up far better on my N80 that I had before my F100. I will admit that after buying my first F100, I then used it far more than the N80. Sadly, I was in the middle of a shoot for a historical re-enactment group when the latches on the F100 failed, the door popped open and exposed my film. I was already shooting digital at the time, so that sad accident accelerated my switch FT digital. Of late, I have decided to go back to shooting B & W film and thus, the use of an N80 and a desire to either a) repair my F100 or just buy another working body. I am very glad that I found your channel; it is very much a "blast from the past" and a nice return to my days shooting film as well as very informative. Of late, I have been using Ilford XP 2 Super as it's less expensive to get developed commercially in C41 chemistry and because I don't have a darkroom in my small apartment. I started using the Ilford XP-2 Super for chromogenic B & W printing until Kodak introduced the equally good BW400CN (which sadly, is now no longer available). I also subscribed and will look forward to your new postings here at YT. Cheers.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Matt, I also wanted to add that I do use AF lenses as I no longer trust my vision to focus manually. I was just told I have the beginning of cataracts, but they are not yet bad enough to require surgery to fix them, but I believe they are impeding my ability to manually focus, as well as read just about anything without ever more powerful reading glasses. Thus, I rely 100% on AF when I take my photos.

Hello Matt, I am buying a parts body F100 to fix my 20-year-old F100. The film door latches broke and doors are no longer available so I am buying a body just to get the door. BTW, the F100 production run ended in 2006 and was available for in stock purchases after that, but Nikon switched to an all digital line-up with the exception of the F6 and the FM10 (manufactured by Cosina for them) when they saw that film cameras would be a dying breed as DSLRs improved dramatically. Cheers from the USA.

Regarding the sticky back on the F100, I have a Nikon D70s where the body became very sticky. I permanently solved the problem by rubbing down the body 5 or 6 times with 92% alcohol which eliminated the stickiness but left the body dull. (The higher the alcohol percentage the better.) I then wiped the body down a few times with Armor-All wipes to return the glossy surface.

Hey Matt have you ever done a comparison of Nikon 35mm focal length lenses? Back in the film days I was a Olympus shooter, so would love to know you thoughts on how good the 35's are on Nikon for film and digital compared to your favs on Leica. I find my Oly 35's are pretty good for their age, but the bokeh is a little nervous wide open compared to my Summarit-M 35mm f/2.4 ASPH at all apertures.

Great review of a lovely camera. Sadly the back door latch is also a major problem with this camera. 3D fixes are on ebay and people put on data backs as a replacement. The F90X does not suffer from this problem and is a bargain if you want a solid camera that runs on AAs, but not for long as prices will rise. If a sticky back is a problem on either of these cameras use rubbing alcohol to take the rubber off to a smooth surface.

I misplaced my beloved F100 a few years ago during an overseas move. I loved it so much that I almost bought another one off eBay, but remained set on finding it among my boxes of stuff. Eventually out of desperation I bought an F90X for the ridiculous price of US$28, and was amazed at its robustness, functionality, and handling. Of course, shortly after I bought the F90X I uncovered the F100 in the last unopened box from my move. So now I have both and will keep using them as long as I have film to feed them.

Great video on all the a/f cameras of the time. As you have used the F4, F80, F100 and F5 I would be interested in your opinion of the a/f point visibility on each. Which is your preference? This to me is the most important aspect of usability. I have actually used the F75 also, which to me is the most complete, like a dslr, with both illuminated focus point and beep confirmation. I find the non illuminated, very faint single point bracket of the F4 the hardest to see, the F80 and F100 are illuminated but no beep, and the F5 much bolder bracket selected but no illumination or beep. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Duncan! This isn’t really my area of expertise but I think I got a good hit rate with the F4/F5/F80/F100 with static subjects in good light. I still missed more that manual focus which is why I’m selling. The F501 beeps but the AF is terrible. I had to turn it off and try to focus by eye on a not ideal focus screen. MF older bodies have a much better screen for MF for me. I’m sure there must be beep options on many of them in the custom menu. (They can almost make you dinner they offer so many functions!) :)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the prompt reply. Surprisingly there are not many beep options on these older film bodies, it's either there and on, or not. Unlike the newer digital bodies, where they do give you options for beep volume and on/off, and also illuminated focus points on/off or variable. For me, if the F4 had both it would be the perfect film camera, as I actually prefer its retro design over the F100 and after. Keep it up!

I was looking for a lighter alternative to my F4 and borrowed an F100 for a bit. It was a great camera, but, no mirror lock up, which I make use of. To rub salt in that wound, the self timer doesn’t raise the mirror at the begging of the cycle so you can’t even use that trick. Most of the consumer cameras from this era also lost that ability. Ended up with an FA, which I love. Kept the F4 though!

Hi Matt, I have the f5 and it is heavy but not much different than my d850 with battery grip. i like my manual focus zeiss glass but the focus confirmation on the f5 is at the top of the view finder and I have difficulty seeing it in bright light. The f100 is the size of my d850 without the grip easily carried around the neck and the focus confirmation is bright and in the lower part of the viewfinder next to the meter scale. Looks like this will be my manual focus camera around my neck with the f5 on a black rapid strap at my R hip with auto focus lenses. I like the 1/8000 sec twice as much as 1/4000 on my fm2n and can use all my lenses and have focus confirmation for shallow dof. Mine has a bit of a sticky grip in the finger area but the more I wipe it down the less sticky. Or the f100 could be my auto focus camera with an 85 snd fm2n manual focus with a 35 zeiss distagon. Can pop on the f100 the 135 2.0 dc to round out my carry kit.

Another great video but one thing wrong( 🙄sorry), Nikon stopped making the F100 in 2006 and not 2012 but put that in context the D100 came out in 2002 and then the D70 in 2004 so Nikon kept semi pro-film cameras going for a few years after they released digital seni-pro cameras. I use the manual focus version of the 501! In the US they were the n2000 (mf) and n2020 (af). I actually really love it because it feels very manual but it has a true aperture priority mode so I can use it in quicker moments and not think so much, but still have control. So if you get the chance, the n2000/f301 is very cheap and works perfectly with mf Nikon lenses.

Hi Matt, I have been thinking of buying a Nikon film camera to use with my Nikon and Voigtlander SL lenses. The problem is that I find it hard to see the value of shooting film over digital after having viewed the works of some dedicated film shooters here on KZfaq. Can you give me a on good reason to buy a Nikon film camera?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Helgi! Yes lots :) Where do I start. 1) get older Nikon with less automation to slow you down so you get time to think. See FM/FE video. 2) imagines look pre edited with film. Portraits look much more flattering for me. 3) Every frame counts so you shoot less but more keepers. 4) Film cameras are way more fun to operate, older ones much more so. The kids now are shooting film as they want different to mass digital. They print them and really treasure the memories from a holiday etc rather than lost on the iPhone or hard drive.

Great review! I have the F100 and F80, and even though it’s inferior on paper I prefer the F80. It’s like half the weight and size, and the grip fits my hands better. But yes, I had two eBay F80’s arrive with broken door latches. It’s incredible that Nikon put the camera out with that design flaw. The F100 has plastic door latches too, but they’re much thicker. The F100 design flaw is the truly crappy plastic battery holder and door. The AF-S 50/1.4G, 28/1.8G, 24/1.8G, 85/1.8G and 105/2 DC are all incredible lenses, that’s why I grudgingly use these modern plastic cameras.

The F100 since 1999 never disappoints. Issues here - 1) cheap plastic lugs on the flimsy, plasticky backdoor are prone to break easily, and 2) the MS-12 4x AA battery holder is also prone to break always at a specific point, they cost like 40-50 bucks into late 2022, which is insane for a few grams of plastic, nowadays. MS-13 lithium 2x CR123A battery holder is practically not avialable, and *if* so, costs even more, than the MS-12, from Japan. It's crazy.

Hi Matt. There is a caveat to the F100 ability to meter with Ai and Ais lenses in that it can do only center-weighted and spot metering (i.e. no matrix metering with those lenses). It's also worth noting that the F100 is less durable than the F90X (or N90S in North America). The F90X is a lot cheaper than the F100 and in my view much better value but you need to be aware that VR does not work and also you are limited to Program and Shutter priority modes (no manual or Aperture or Manual modes) with G type lenses (i.e. those without aperture rings). I personally enjoy shooting more with the F90X although the F100 handles nicely also.

Hi Matt, I think I've seen all your Nikon camera reviews from the F5 to the FG-20 and virtually everything in between. However there's one you haven't tried (if I'm correct?) and given what you're saying in this video about going back to MF it's the one I really think you should consider..... It's beautifully designed, built like a tank yet relatively compact, shoots in aperture priority and manual, has interchangeable viewfinders and prisms, and can use any Nikkor lens that has an aperture ring (including pre-Ai Nikkor lenses). It's.......the Nikon F3. And if you want to lose a few grams in weight you could go for the Nikon F3/T version. It has titanium top and bottom covers, prism housing and rear door. I own A LOT of Nikon bodies (don't ask!) but for a combination of reasons the F3/F3t is my personal favorite. I reckon if you tried an F3 it would become your 'go to' camera for MF SLR shooting. Edit: Opps, I've just remembered that the flash sync speed of the F3 is only 1/80th second (I don't use flash), which might be a game changer for you knowing your shooting style. Ah well, back to the drawing board. Sorry Matt.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hey Matt, thanks for replying. I have an FM2n and they're a lovely camera but it has a few downsides for me, none of which probably apply to you. 1. You can't see the full viewfinder image if wearing specs (which I do) 2. It won't accept pre-Ai lenses (some of my favorite lenses are pre-Ai) and 3. There's no option for aperture priority (which I like to use sometimes. However the earlier FM does accept pre-Ai lenses). The F3 ticks all of those boxes which is partially why I rate it so highly I suppose. If it wasn't for Brexit with the possibility of import fees etc. (I live in Ireland) I'd loan you my F3/T to try out. I think it'd make a cracking video of you doing a real world test for all the F3 users out there. Okay, think you have me convinced Matt. Think I'll have to head over to Patreon...

Even the converted pre-AI lenses don't work right. But all the new lenses work except the AF-P. You even get vr. Sure, if you drop it on concrete or step on it, it will die with a horrible crunching sound. So get another one on eBay for $25. The N75 is 13.4 oz of the finest plastic Chem labs can make for a nickel. A steep hike on Mount Rainier to see Comet falls?
