i always dislike when people hate on media aimed at kids for "heavy topics" when.. kids go through these things? kids witness marital issues, witness money struggles? they NEED that representation. they NEED that to feel seen and to help cope with everything. it's so incredibly important.

I stole a Nintendo power magazine from the local Barnes and Noble, because I was a dumb kid. I took it home and for months was plagued with paranoia that my mom would find it, so I only opened it up at night to avoid detection. Within this Nintendo power was a multi-page feature on chibi robo. Somehow my brain's wires have remained so crossed that as soon as I saw this pop up on my subscription feed I was immediately terrified in that same childlike way just by seeing chibi robo again, so thank you for that.

I think that something really interesting you touched lightly on is that, in some ways, Chibi Robo is a game about spending your energy helping people and finding yourself rewarded for doing it. It's about showing up for people and making a difference while still making sure to take care of yourself. It seems like a lovely game and a lesson certainly worth being in a kid's game.

The early-mid 2000's really had weirdly a lot of games where you're just a really little guy doing things in a big world. - Pikmin 1 and 2 - Katamari - Chibi Robo There's probably more but those few were arguably the most mainstream.

I found about Chibi-Robo through SSF2. He’s one of those characters who I don’t know much about but his design even in a fan game shows how interesting his is. I love how music ties into his actions. His side special is the toothbrush and I was really happy when I found out how to (or realized I could) make the entire song play without him brushing all the way into the blast zone.

Hearing about Chibi Robo always makes me sad. The first game was so full of heart and well written and I’m glad that’s explored here since the actual fate of the series (being doomed to fail and turned into a soulless platformer before being abandoned) is far too well known. Especially with how many indie studios are being killed off by bigger companies and how many of said companies expressed disinterest in experimentation, it shows that it doesn’t matter how good something is, how loved it is, even how well it sells-if it isn’t an entry in a best selling series, it means nothing to the industry. Indie games are absolutely carrying the gaming landscape, but I don’t know how long that’ll last given their treatment and rising costs of both development and general living conditions. We need games like Chibi Robo again :(

I had the pleasure of talking with Hirofumi Taniguchi (the sound designer and composer for Chibi-Robo!) and got to chat about how this game holds a special place in my heart ever since I got it at a Gamestop at like age 8. He also agrees that this entry is his favorite, though he did also work for composing Chibi-Robo Photo Finder as well (the others were composed by different people.) Also the voice lines for Sarge are most likely sampled from a Monty Python movie "The Meaning of Life". I asked him about it, he didn't mention it directly, but said that they'd often "imitate" actors' voices themselves. - Though I did my own research and edited the movie, sure enough both Sarge and the Free Rangers were chopped up, pitched differently and sped up to get the distinct sound. (Most likely other characters' voices were the same, after watching the movie in full I heard at least 2 other instances of people who likely had their voice sampled and used in Chibi-Robo as well.)

If you end up playing it I would recommend a capture card to a 3ds specifically as it plays a lot better on there (or you can use the control stick patch if you don’t wanna bother). The translation is pretty good too, the only issue with it is in Captain Iberico’s (the pig cop’s) story line. I feel like there’s a pun that’s not being translated well as Telly keeps calling him “Captain Scared” and it just sounds like there’s meant to be some play on words that’s not translating well, but the rest of the translation is great tbh I would really recommend it

As someone who is Very Normal about robots as a concept, Chibi Robo has been on my radar for a bit. It just seemed so silly and the robot designs are absolutely amazing, but now knowing just how good the games story is and its use of the concept of humanity outside of flesh when I only really knew about the cleaning and charging mechanics, I’m genuinely tempted to give it a shot. Thank you for giving me insight into just how awesome this game can be, I don’t think I ever would’ve actually thought to try it out myself.

I played that thing the entire time they were shopping and they had to drag me away from it to get me to go home.

I subscribed to your channel initially off of the old Chibi-robo video since I've always been a big fan of the games and it was great to see you revisit it! I think this is by far the best analysis of this game I've seen yet and perfectly encapsulates why I love this game so much

Yakko, what the Funk. I went from "Oh, cool. A New yakko video to check out", to crying about a lego truck and some dancing flowers from a game i heard in passing once over 7 years ago. 🙃

Chibi-Robo is my spirit animal, and I adore that little amiibo. I love the little guy so much; this game and the sequel on the DS had such a huge impact on me as a kid. Beautiful stuff, and I yearn so hard for this game to come back in some form.

Chibi Robo Park Patrol was my absolute favorite growing up and I miss it every time I think about booting my DS up. I got it originally as a hand-me-down from my older brother but I gave it back to him when he moved out and im incredibly tempted to see if i can find another copy for my personal collection. Whats there not to love about being a little guy taking care of some flowers and befriending other toys?

I always love your videos, but Chibi Robo was a big part of my childhood! I really just happened upon it one day in a gamestop when I was a kid, and just by chance my dad bought it for me. I mean the stars really aligned for me to get this game because the cashier actually never put the disc in the box, so we had to make a whole trip back to get the actual game lol. That's the way this game got into my hands and has left a lasting impact on me. I need to dust off my gamecube and replay it soon! Excellent video as always Yakko!

Oh my stars, thank you for talking about this game Yakko! Hearing anyone mention Chibi Robo in this day and age feels so nostalgic to me. It was such an iconic and influential piece of my childhood, I truly wish it had a better chance at success. There's nothing more charming than an itty bitty robot helping ease a family's woes, thru little actions that eventually make a big impact. I can think of no other game with this level of creativity, I would love to see a full remake of it one day!!!

I know there’s been a lot of speculation regarding how the second half of 2024 will look for Nintendo since the Switch successor was seemingly delayed internally. A lot of people think Nintendo will rely on more ports and remasters to pad out the release calendar until the next console. It would be so awesome to get a Chibi Robo port for Switch. Definitely looking forward to the June direct and keeping my fingers crossed!

Honestly, it's kind of sad to see that some of the criticism was "well, it looks adorable, but the story is too mature for a kid's game." It feels like it's condemning both the artistic value of games *and* the intelligence of kids. I was a teen when I played this game, back when it was relatively new. I loved it then, and it stuck in my memory as a fantastic adventure with moments that were brutally real for the game about an adorable house cleaning bot with psychedelic living toy friends. There are a *lot* of Gamecube games that went all sorts of wild and weird places, which don't really get covered today and likely wouldn't be brought into the modern era, but deserve attention nonetheless. Thank you for bringing this one back into memory.

the reason I adore watching old shows from overseas an some movies more recent over there as well do what the west fears so often Mirai is a film where the director based the main little children characters off his own kids an the whole films so real as heck "When watching this film I know how much you love our kids" is the best thing to hear from your wife

I’m glad you went over one of the most charming yet forgotten Nintendo franchises. I first discovered Chibi Robo a few years back and was fortunate to get a GC copy at GameStop. I fell in love with this game immediately. I enjoy niche games similar to this game. Eventually i tried out Chibi-Robo Clean Sweep (english fan translation of Okaeri!) on the DS and it was fantastic, it exceeded my expectations!! It’s unfortunate that Chibi Robo was destined to die in the 3DS era. I doubt a revival could happen in the future. I’ll continue to play through Chibi-Robo GC game and the DS sequel again and again.

Barely talk about the story, just the game play. But seeing your video, going into deeper detail, really got me interested. Maybe I'll try and grab it someday. Thanks Yakko.
