9-1-91
Rotterdam, Holland - Day 2 of this fest starts with another call from Keith. We hit the local hash bar for a space cake breakfast. Hard to believe tonight is the last show of this tour, it's been great fun. Hung out with Nick Cave, a really nice gentleman who bought me a beer. Thurston introduced us, and mentioned "Desperate Teenage Lovedolls", and Mr. Cave said it sounded great. The festival is held in a big indoor multi-hall convention center-type place, with many bands playing simultaneously. Nirvana we're getting really tanked-up backstage, and Chris tells me Kurt is flying on mushrooms. I film Kim doing the band's make up. Courtney Love enters the room, with Billy Corgan {Smashing Pumpkins were playing too} and introduces him to everyone. I think everyone was vastly underwhelmed. After they leave, Kurt scrawls on the wall in magic marker; "Courtney + Gish" and smiled incessantly. Nirvana go on and just about drive me to tears. They were fucking up too, but fucking up gloriously. I film most of the set, loading the cartridges non-stop. I was even calling out songs from stage right. "Hey Kurt, play In Bloom!" {They haven't played that song on this tour 'til tonight.} At the end, Kurt goes into distructo mode, and won't stop, until he is accosted by bouncers. Alex soon puts a stop to it.

Comments from a trader on dimeadozen:
Comments from dime users:
"I think the Nirvana set from this festival is a raw and nice performance, just before the mainstream and thus the beggining of the end..."
"At the festival Nirvana weren't allowed to play on the main stage. The Smashing Pumkins were. Nirvana got (childishsly) mad and destroyed the complete backline (which was not theirs but the PA Rental Service's ) When they tried to demolish the huge sound stacks on the front of house, they were taken off the stage. Needless to say they didn't get paid !
A journalist who spoke with Nirvana that day said:
"I mainly spoke with Cobain, the other two went to the Doelen to check it out. On their return they were moaning about the small hall they would have to play, while a band like the Smashing Pumpkins was on the main stage. This arose a wayward atmosphere."
It really did, Nirvana completely trashed the stage.
The show ends in chaos. In the book Come As You Are Michael Azzerad described the situation as following: For the last show of the tour, in Rotterdam, the group got drunk. Near the end of the show Krist climbed on the PA tower with his trouser on his ankles and a bottle in his hand. Security runs on stage and pulls him down, while Kurt was smashing up everything around him. One of the security guys lashes out to Krist, which started a dispute. Krist got removed from the hall, but came back and started fighting the promoter.
Willem Venema, that same promoter, tells another story. I was warned before the show by my stage manager that they would start throwing with their amps and drum kit. They did that every night, part of the show. I told their tour manager that I would intervene when they would take our stuff, PA and microphones, for the simple reason that there was another band after them. At the end of the show Krist gets up the PA and made a start throwing the speakers down the stage.I walked up to him and pulled him off the PA by his belt. On which Kurt started to interfere , telling me not to touch his buddy. They acted like they were very drunk.

This set is so important for so many reasons, but many people might not realize that Nirvana were virtually unknown on this bill. They were added at the very very last minute, literally within the week or so before the event. “Teen Spirit “ and Nevermind were not released yet - in 3 weeks from now. The Smashing Pumpkins were the indie rock curiosities and hot American indie band on this bill. They’d released “Gish” 4 months earlier to rave reviews plus their lives shows. The Pumpkins were just finishing their set in a nearby venue when Nirvana started this set. The Pumpkins set was good, too, but also marred by audio issues. Sonic Youth, NIN, Nick Cave and a bunch of other bands played this festival, too.

@@joncarling This show was on September 1st 1991 dude - - ten days BEFORE Teen Spirit and three weeks BEFORE Nevermind were even released. Here, Nirvana were only known in parts of the underground indie rock scene. I suggest you read the ‘Nirvana in Netherlands’ interviews with the promoters and DJs involved in this show. They said there was “no interest in Nirvana” at this time and they were “only put on this bill under protest, because Sonic Youth insisted”. Check the facts bud. This was before the Nirvana you know from Nevermind.

@@joncarling Lol. Embarrassing how you kids have no clue. Nirvana were opening for Sonic Youth, dude. Bleach sold a few thousand copies. 😂 If you’re gonna talk about Nirvana, get the facts straight. They were still an underground band and Nirvana were not well known - at this time Smashing Pumpkins were the indie-rock darlings. The Pumpkins played the bigger stage at this festival which Nirvana were not happy about. Nirvana were added to the bill literally at the last second IN PROTEST. The people who booked Nirvana for this show will tell you different. Nirvana blew up AFTER this.

I was there... exactly thirty years ago today. I remember this show very well! It made a big impression on me at that time! I was standing right in the front, first row, a little bit on the left. Thurston Moore was on the left of the stage, watching from the balcony. I never knew that there was actually video footage of this show! I found this video only last week and was really surprised to see that it was filmed, even with multiple cameras! I still have two of the volume knobs, grabbed from the stage in the mess at the end. Only later I learned that they smashed up their instruments at the end of every show at that time. It was something special that night!

THIS is the absolute zenith of Nirvana as a live band, in my humble opinion. Post-Dave joining, Post-Nevermind recording, pre-fame, pre-Courtney, pre-drugs. Just look at how engaged and happy Kurt looks. They're super tight, aggressive and playing to an eager audience who is hearing some of rock music's best songs for the first time ever. Three months later, things would never be the same again.

Those are technicalities, Kurt and Courtney weren’t fully together until October ‘91 in Chicago, Kurt had only dabbled in heroin (couldn’t afford to be a full-on addict at that point), none of the pressure of fame had hit the bad at this point, and it shows in the music. I can not fathom why any nirvana fan would give a thumbs down on a live concert or any nirvana video for that matter. for a lot of us (me included) this is as good as it will ever be..... hell; when new nirvana material surfaces that’s like a free ticket to a nirvana show for a brief moment.....and that’s as good as it gets for me, until someone invents a time-machine.

Despite the mess of the show it was one of their last really great shows. Some of the best live versions of songs were at this show. It seemed like the last tour where they were really having a good time especially Kurt. They just partied through the whole thing. 1992 onwards the quality of most shows went down and they just looked jaded. Sometimes it picked up but mostly they were going through the motions it wasn't raw and amazing like this show.

True, and it makes me sad to think about.. Success and fame is a curse, because you're criticized every step of the way and then all of a sudden things get "serious". To be honest, I've struggled with the same things. I might not have been an international rock star, but it became apparent early on that the more successful you become, the less freedom you have. Ultimately, that's why Kurt played music in the first place.. freedom and expression. RIP.

at least we still have his music while he was on this earth and videos to at least try to feel the experience. he had an amazing impact on so very many people including myself. i do understand why he is missed because it seemed he wanted to go solo and sing and continue to empower many lives. im sorry for rambling however im not because to me its worth keeping his memory alive talking about him. okay im finished now haha i just hope wherever he went (if anywhere) i hope hes at peace and happy. Thank you for listening and take care :) now im really finished.

Connie Voltaire. Wholly original, even a pretty different style, his current project, Neo Neos, being Punk Rock. Incredible songwriting and musicianship, even if the guitar sounds like a dying motor most of the time! It's noisey, dirty sounding, and all through out it, a small man with long, brown hair screams like he's exorcising a demon. Great stuff, check out the Neo Neos album "Type V"

Andre Soeteman No disrespect to NIN but you made the right decision. I'm envious of you for getting to see Nirvana play live. I am an equal fan to each member of the band. I was at least lucky enough to get to see the Foo Fighters live in 97, it was a small club so I got to see Dave Grohl and Pat Smear up close. I was in shock, seeing them live right in front of my face, an arms length away, words can't describe the emotions I was feeling. No other music has connected with my heart and soul like Nirvanas music. I wish everybody could have that experience,

I read, among the many things written about them, that Drain You was indeed counted as the/a favorite. ...that scream. :>) School must have been also because it was the most played song they did, often opened with it.

yo! in a '93 interview, kurt went as far as to say that drain you was just as good as, if not better than, smells like teen spirit. "I love the lyrics, and I never get tired of playing it"

@@juniorsaenz9845 In a different interview Kurt also said he never understood why Drain You was never as popular if not more popular than Teen Spirit as he felt it was the song he put the most effort into. Then jokingly said that if it were the big hit off Nevermind he probably wouldn't like it as much. I can see why he liked it so much. It's definitely one of my all time favorites EDIT: fixed grammar and spelling mistakes and I believe the interview is from 92. Same day as the Reading show but I could be very wrong as I've never seen the full interview
