I'm 53 black female soul girl at heart. I remember 1st hearing this. Me and my boyfriend at the time, sat on the edge of his bed. Mouths open, wide eyed in shock! Its not that we hated it, Great Music is Great Music! It was just so unlike anything else... hope that makes sense.😬

This song is a mind blower, a face melter, and one of my favorites. It came out right at the beginning of my senior year of high school. The song single-handledly ushered in a new genre of music, and ended the careers of a lot of pop music artists that were big at the time. The teenagers started dressing like Kurt Cobain, with thrift store clothes and they dyed their hair crazy colors. What a time. It's hard to believe that was almost 30 years ago. RIP Kurt, one of the greatest.

I was obsessed with Kurt Cobain. After he died I visited his house which had hedges almost as high as a street lamp. I was determined to get close so I walked up the driveway to get a glimpse of it through the gate. The nanny saw me and yelled at me to get me off the property. I snapped a picture of him as he gave me the finger. I think there may have been a dog running toward the gate as well. I was a bit scared but after travelling by car and bus from Canada I had to pay tribute.

BEST REACTION I'VE SEEN, other than Kids React To Nirvana lol... you got it sooo right, & us generation X youngans of the 90's can attest to how our worlds exploded, no matter where we were in the world, when we first heard this!! it was intense. it bull-dozed those crusty hair rockers with nothing intelligent to say to us, right off the radar. it was the most beautiful moment in millions of our lives, i can't even tell you!! Kurt Cobain was fragile & deep, & couldn't take the burdens of life, but he'll never be forgotten for speaking up for us, where it was desperately needed, with inclusive empathy, in a severely corrupt world. This song, born out of the grunge movement, changed the direction of music. The week before Michael Jackson was #1 on the top 40. Then suddenly this song was #1 and top 40 radio went from pop to rock. It also ended the popularity of heavy metal as bands went back to an organic sound.

Dude I felt just as hyped for this song as you just did when it originally was released back in 1991. I was 18 and was in my college dorm. I heard some one playing this song in their dorm room on a really loud electric guitar a few floors below me. I ran down from my room on the 6th floor until I found the room the guitar was coming from, and I pounded on the door and made the guy playing it who was actually a gigging guitarist in a band that was going to play that song that night in a huge college bar that night show me how to play that song note for note. I had just started learning guitar a few months before hand, and this was a major breakthrough for me.

'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is when it all went mainstream at the time. I remember being a teen in the 90s, no one had heard of these bands. I had a bit of that obnoxious I-listen-to-cooler-more-obscure-stuff-than-you attitdue. Then this exploded. It was being played at high school pep rallies all of a sudden. 'WTF?' I thought. My little, young, you-can't-understand-me mind exploded. And now I feel like an ass for begrudging the 'popular kids' Nirvana. Music is music and the good stuff speaks beyond boundaries. RIP Kurt.

Man I love seeing your reaction to this song. It's the same reaction the entire nation had to it when it came out. This song was number one on every nightly countdown on every station rock, hip hop r&b, country you name it. I was in high school at the time and every party it got played at went CRAZY. It's good to see that it goes just as hard a generation later. Much love to this channel.

"We need songs like this" Couldn't agree more with that sentiment. And it's especially true in todays day and and age. There's no new music with this kind of energy. Where the hell did all the energy disappear from music?
