It feels like it has been a long time since Nissan made any real impact on the EV market, especially since they practically invented the family EV with the Leaf over ten years ago. But given how the family car landscape has changed (and really changed by Nissan itself with the introduction of the Qashqai back in 2007) it only seemed right that their next electric car should be some form of crossover. And now its here. The problem is, unlike when they launched the Leaf, everyone else is already here now. So can the new Ariya make any kind of impact into a very crowded, and very talented market space? We put it through its paces to find out.

Nice review, thanks! Its rare that a reviewer takes the time to properly get to know the car. I do have almost the exact same Ariya and the e-4orce version coming. I think that says all about how I like the car. There actually are shortcuts to control all seat stuff like heating, cooling and also the heated steering wheel. So you do not have to jump into the climate menu every time. The boot is a bit of a Tardis really, numbers aren't amazing, but the way it is shaped (compared to the Model Y, the hatch opening is waaaaaay wider i.e.) and the fact, that the cargo can stick out a LOT without colliding with the hatch gives you a huge cubic space. I made a video on that, and the boot actually rivals my old X-Trail. In some respects like load depth, it even is bigger. Concerning the e-4orce model, it's important to note, that only the underfloor storage will be limited (there actually still is space under there), the boot itself will stay as it is. Also, the maximum load capacity is very good indeed, and actually dethrones the Enyaq, sporting 1775L. The Model Y is measured in Tesla-Space-Units, so whatever numbers they put out, they do not count. From what I saw of it, this car is your classic spec sheet tiger, but it just doesn't deliver in real life. Can't even fit a bike in the back. Just won't fit due to the narrow opening. Concerning the graphics/screens: The screens have an anti glare coating, and as with all matte screens, they are...well...matte. Maybe that irritated you? I had that moment when I first sat in the car. But the next day you don't even notice it anymore, the screens are sharp as a knife indeed. Also, that coating works wonders, perfectly done in fact. Glossy screens in cars just are a tremendously bad idea in my book. Small things that are very upmarket but will skip your attention at first: double glazed windows, plasma cluster air purifying system (yes, it also kills covid!), recall everything, so mirrors, steering wheel, seats, infotainment, settings! Also, the Matrix LED system is amazing. The punch it has, and the fact that even the low beam is adaptive really make it stand out. Last but not least, this car is a super efficient charger. The losses, even in -11°C, are considerably lower than with any other EV of that class. I average around 3% loss both DC and AC, which is amazing. And all that while charging really fast (around Model3/Y times).

I went from a Model Y to the Ariya - The Model Y is no paper tiger, its a real tiger and a splendid car, much faster charging as you do not usually charge to 80% (up to 250kw in the beginning of charging, the car calculates route/stop and charge amount based on utilizing the initial high charge curve) and it plans the route and charging automatically, easy peasy, usually a charging stop is 10-20mins if you get a good session- The space is also incredible in the Y and very practical, I have had a mountainbike in there(front wheel removed) and would say my 2 (medium sized labrador and a large Danish Spitz) and dogs fit better in the Model Ys trunk.. The Y also has lots more places to stash stuff, however both cars are excellent in the trunk department - I would probably have choosen to keep the Y if I often went on +1000km trips and didnt mind the hard suspension and noise level- The Y is also much more sporty driving with the hard suspension and 500hp… Although fit and finish lacks a bit, it has been 100% reliable and easy to use in everyday use… However I only travel far a couple of times a year and the Ariya is much, much more comfortable and quiet which I prefer over sporty/fast so Ive made the switch with that in mind - Fit and finish is also much better in the Ariya and I love the manually opened charging port (the electronic one on Tesla could cause issues in winter when iced over). The Ariya is also much cheaper/easier to insure… Here in Denmark the Model Y AWD LR is cheaper to purchase than the Ariya FWD 87kw at the moment.. Which car is better is not a clear cut, just writing this to balance/nuance opinion on the cars - both excellent cars just quite different in some areas and which is better for you is up to your individual needs and tastes…

I went from a KIA eNiro to a Tesla Model Y to the Ariya (I've of course has had gas and diesel cars in the past too) - The Ariya is the most comfortable car I've had for a good while, if not ever - it's really nice, quiet and comfortable for long rides, love it!

Good review, that's exactly the Ariya model I have, 87kwh Evolve with sport pack in pearl blue, looks fantastic inside and out. If you're moving up from a Leaf you'll find the only similarity is that they're both made by Nissan, the Ariya is in another ball park. If you have a Leaf it'll take a week or so to get used to the Ariya's e-Pedal, the only real difference is that the Ariya will only slow to about 5mph, you have to touch the brake pedal to completely stop. However it does have auto-hold so you don't need to keep your foot on the brake once you've stopped. Pro-Pilot is unchanged, that will bring you to a complete stop when following traffic.

E(step)-pedal does stop if on even a gentle up-slope. However, not coming to a stop in slow crawling traffic is a big plus over Leaf (and other cars) style - but convincing ex-Leaf drivers of that is tougher than persuading them to change political or religious belief, so just drive on.

Absolutely one of the best videos of the Nissan Ariya and I have seen many while waiting for my Ariya. You have done a complete evaluation of everything. It is a crossover (you do not sit low) with extreme comfort but also enough power to satisfy most people. I received mine 5 days ago, Ariya e-4orce (87 kw battery and AWD) and already notice the comfort, quietness and especially good control around curves. It was interesting your coments about Tesla Y and your comparisons in the end to Skoda Enjaq and Kia E6. I was surprised that you did not include Hyundai Ioniq 5 in this comparison. Thank you for a great video!

I was part of a direct comparison between the Ariya, the ID-4, the Mach-E, the Model Y, and the Ionic 5. Of those vehicles, the Ionic had the largest interior with the nicest quality of materials. The Ariya was a close second to interior quality, but it’s nowhere nearly as big inside as the Ionic 5. The Mach-E had the worst interior quality. The Model Y had the most storage space but it was too minimalistic for most on my panel, including myself. I like SOME buttons, not just a touch screen. The Ariya gets points for having “normal” door handles, too. The Mach-E’s door buttons were terrible and unintuitive. Since the Ariya has a liquid-cooled battery, it shouldn’t have the battery longevity issues the LEAF had.

My choice was between the Ioniq5 and the Ariya. I went for the Ariya because of the better refinement and more usable boot space for our need. I wouldn’t say the Ioniq is much bigger inside at least not in the front. The Ariya is just perfect for our family of five 👍

I wouldn't really even consider the Hyundai. Only trolls and people who sadly believe them buy them. The company has literally killed people and destroyed evidences until last year, and probably hasn't changed. And no offense, but the Ioniq inside is just mediocre. Nothing to do with this. Big NO to Hyundai and Kia if you consider moral before buying. Terrible NO if you consider their unreliable recent background.

@@SLeeSG Make sure to add Ford to that list (Pinto fires and that it was cheaper to settle lawsuits than to fix the problem, F150 fires inside garages), GM (keys that fell out and caused a loss of control), etc. Cars are death machines, regardless of brand. Unfortunately, now a days, you cannot choose the company with the higher moral ground because they all suck.

@@SLeeSG Well, Nissan has had some issues too. Poor CVTs and people having to pay stacks of money to replace battery packs in Leafs. But, that said, we decided to get an Ariya. Just got it a couple of days. Though I almost wish we got an EV6. I’m just saying that most vehicle manufacturers have skeletons in their closets.

Realy good and relevant review for me ; considering I`ve just been offered a 2 day test drive of this car. My Qashqai e-Power has totaly let me down over 7 months old of usage.. This is now my number 1 purchase in this class.

Just ordered mine, love the styling and it looks about like the Skoda Enyaq coupe, love the swoopy backend , I upgraded to the Bose pack too so camera review mirror, 10 speaker system and head up display

Glad to see the review. Having put a deposit down without your review I was bricking it in case you didn't like it. Thankfully you have reinforced my decision. I have test drove Polestar, Kia EV6 Ionic, EQA, MG something and the Enyaq and I have to say when I got in this car and drove it I just knew it was the one. Like the Barbour by the way. Xmas present?

You have nothing to fear about with the Ariya, you will love it. I was really surprised by it (I like being surprised by cars) and how good it was. And yes, new Barbour for Christmas! With the amount of stuff I have from them I'm surprised they haven't asked me to be a brand ambassador! I think I wear a piece of Barbour in almost every video now! @@Antiguan_Dart I did consider the GV60 and was close to putting a deposit down on release. What stopped me was being unable to get a test drive as that was not possible at the time, lack of reviews on the base spec at the time as refinement (ride quality) is important to me. Having test drove the ionic 5 it felt a bit clunky over town roads and was worried this would carry over to gv60. The Ariya didn't have this issue when I drove it very smooth in my opinion. Lastly the dealership issue my Nissan dealership is 1 mile from the house. The GV60 dealership is in London some 250 miles away so as my first EV I was a bit nervous of that. It was high on my list for the basic model plus the heads up display. Also the evolve is well specified well above anything from kia, Hyundai, Merc, BMW etc.

Thanks for you candour, re: your purchase decision. For the benefit of anyone else reading this thread - Genesis in the UK don’t do dealerships everything is done to your home - vehicle deliver on enclosed vehicle carrier, and similarly for service or maintenance. There is a Genesis Studio in London but purchase can be done via online and you are allocated a Personal Assistant. For a test drive a vehicle is brought to your home! I got to test drive the Kia EV6 AWD and Ionic 5 at Fully Charged UK live 2022 saw the GV60 there too but test drive was done subsequently. I felt the GV60 and Kia EV6 had more in common a firm ride which I liked reminiscent to my last car my Mazda Rx-8 - you feel in touch with the road. The GV60 is definitely the more expensive of the E-GMP trio when comparing specifications I had to forgo 20” wheels and AWD to get the GV60 within a rods reach of the Kia EV6 GTLine S AWD model. But I do think with metal switch gear, soft touch surfaces almost throughout, absence of gloss black and if your thing the Nappa leather seating it’s a more luxurious option. I sadly didn’t get to drive the Nissan Ayria though did see it at Fully Charged UK 2022 indeed a nice looking car but not to my personal styling. Additionally I wanted something just a little smaller -GV60 is some 165mm shorter than EV6, 120mm shorter than Ionic 5 and 80mm shorter than the Ayria so I went with the GV60 Premium 226 bhp RWD fully loaded and am very happy. It is great that there is so much choice. An exciting time to buy an EV.

Great review - thank you - ordered my 87kwh Evolve in White with black roof and 19 inch wheels in Mar 22 and took delivery in October. Extremely happy with the car, especially with the improved low speed ride and ultimate range on the 19s. Having traded in a Leaf and a Qashqai I really think this car with its stunning looks, high standards of equipment, build quality and comfort, takes the best bits from my previous Nissans plus a whole lot more. The range on a full charge has dropped from an easy 300+ miles in a mild October to around 250 miles in freezing conditions in December, and now up to 275 miles in slightly milder weather. All, exactly as I’d expected.

Really interesting that you found the ride better in the 19-inch wheels, as I’d been led to believe there wasn’t much difference. Obviously someone whom is actually living with the car (ie, you) can tell me differently. Good to know. The range you are seeing is also impressive. I found it ok, not the best, but certainly not the worst, but then most of my time with the car was spent in motorways and opens A-roads. Even so, that’s a decent range you are getting. I was really impressed by the Ariya and I think Nissan have done a great job with it. Again, thanks for watching and supporting the channel and taking the time to comment. Bryan.

A well structured review, as always, from AutoEV but I'll still complain that there is no real world charging or range info. I guess it's about standard for most EV reviewers in the UK.

I get it John, but I'm also conscious that we test cars at very different times of year. The efficiency of the Ariya in winter will be different to a rival in summer and we don't want to show an unfair comparison. I also drive the cars in all different scenarios on different roads, so its hard to e consistent. It is difficult, but I do get what you are saying. I will try and include more general information in the future reviews, but will always quote WLTP for consistency. Thanks for continuing to watch and take the time to comment, it really is appreciated.

@@AutoEV Exactly, that it is essential to factor in all the info regarding temperature when testing. Road test at various speeds say 50mph and then again at 70mph noting the consumption over a set distance. Also charging speeds at different temperatures noting the all the relevent charging rates etc. I realize that this takes up a lot of time but it's they only way one can indicate how the car will perform in everyday conditions which is what an EV purchaser needs to know. Great thorough review. I have an option of getting this through salary sacrifice scheme, however for a little bit more, I also have the choice of GV60. That interior looks more luxurious but which one would you choose based on overall looks, size, practicality? Ariya or GV60?

Oh, tough choice. The GV60 is a great car, and I love its quirky looks. That said, the Ariya is bigger, and the interior feels a bit more special. If its size and practicality you need, then I think the Ariya has to be the winner.

The issue was we had the car booked for November and it had to be cancelled by Nissan. Also, a lot of reviews were done at a 1 hour press launch. We had the car for a week and formed a more detailed opinion….hopefully!

Another outstanding review, but at these prices, I just can’t see past the Tesla MY because of the Tesla charging system. The other manufacturers are being seriously let down by the charging network in the UK. I say that as a Kia eNiro 4+ owner for the last year. The car has been excellent, the away from home charging less so….. The Arita otherwise looks like a really good option.

You are 5'8" and you can't get the seat low enough? That's crazy. I'm about 6' and I just tested a Model Y and the first thing I noticed was I felt like the seat couldn't go low enough. Awful imo. This Ariya is a very nice design. Great colour as you said. But Canada hasn't even seen a single Ariya yet.

I’ve heard that it doesn’t make a huge difference. The spring rates do seem to be on the stiffer side.

In my experience the 19s are more comfortable, especially at lower speeds, because of the bigger sidewalls - in fact my 19s seem to fill the wheel arches as well as the 20s with very low profile tyres.

Had one for over a year and I finally see what they mean by tucking under the rear parcel shelf. I dislike the shelf and its annoying strings which easily drop off (singly leaving shelf flapping & unbalanced) when trying to pack a lot in. If it's going to be an issue, it's left at home. Ev6 has a fabulous roller blind retractable shelf - but worse visibility and no rear screen wiper so no contest really.

The delay in the likes of BMW and Renault producing more EVs was surely because there was no demand back then and ad there was no 2030 switchover hanging over their heads. EVs were merely a sideline, 'testing of the water'. Hard to criticise tbh. But things over the next decade things will get interesting (and no doubt way more expensive too) as we get nearer 2030-35.

The Ariya. No doubt. Drives better, better quality interior, looks great and is much, much more efficient. I like the Solterra, but it isn’t good enough for class, especially when the Ariya is available. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope this helps. I have a Niro EV that has a bigger boot, what looks like similar interior space to the Ariya, and tops out at 3k less than the base Ariya. So what do you think the advantage is of the Nissan, given that it seems to be larger just to be larger?

We are huge fans of the Niro EV, and awarded it our best Mid size Family Car award in our 2022 awards. But the Ariya is a different car, not necessarily better, just different. It feels more SUV like than the Kia, which will appeal to a lot of people. It also drives beautifully, not that the Kia doesn’t of course. But it’s like saying that a Range Rover Sport drives just as well as a full size Range Rover, or a Boxster drives as well as a 911. They will appeal to different drivers and users, just like the Ariya will appeal when the Kia doesn’t.

Love the show, but I found out at the Chicago Auto Show that Nissan (Aria and all other models even the ones equipped with BOSE sound system) removed HD radio application from their radio tuners and bundled this PUBLIC UTILITY into their premium MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION! No shame? Really? This stopped me cold from buying Aria

l love the car but its charging curve and lack of 11kw AC or even optional 22kw like other brands, it got some things like the open sunroof option that so many others are deleting as well as rear wiper, but its options list on the different trims is a mess with some options removed the further up in trim, the matrix led lights should be optional on all models, and it motors are still not much different from the existing leaf 64kwh, there should be more efficient motors - better cold weather heating for the pack especially in snow belt country, and why oh why is the boot lights OPTIONAL equipment, thats just nuts on a 60k model

The Ariya's charging curve is one of the best, this is why it can recharge its battery from empty to full just as quick or quicker than cars with much higher peak charging rates. It also means the Ariya is happy to quickly charge all the way to 99% on a rapid charger, non of this only charge to 80% nonsense where you lose 20% of your range. Options list is a bit quirky in the US, UK only has Advance and Evolve trim, Evolve trim has everything including 22kw AC charger. The motor on the Ariya is totally different to the Leaf, the Leaf has a permanent magnet design (made from rare earths), the Ariya has an electrically excited motor (no rare earths) which is lighter and more efficient. It does have a battery heater to help rapid charging in cold weather, you activate it manually about 30-60 minutes before you reach the rapid charger. I was charging at -5 C ok without activating the heater.

The charging curve is very flat, flatter than nearly any competitor, there's 22kW AC charging available that many competitors lack of. Here in Spain the boot lights are standard in all trims. The motors in the Ariya are all new, nothing is share from the Leaf, the type, code and internal layout of the electric motor is all different.

I can't help but think a lot of new cars have very disappointing back seat space, either the head room is tight, the floor is raised up etc etc. Even the boot isnt great at 460 litres it's enough but my smallish 2016 fabia has 330 and decent back seat space although lacking a bit of leg room. And a honda jazz has even better space in the back. The id3 is a smaller car than this but has 385 litres. And decent passenger space. I feel like suv size cars should be better than this in terms of interior space. Also the leaf has almost the same interior space and only slightly smaller boot. Is this not just a slightly fatter slightly bigger but much higher priced leaf? Ok it's nicer in some ways, I would have just rather seen an upgraded leaf with CCS etc. Everyone is different I just wouldn't buy this even if I could afford it 😁

I've been waiting over a year for this with a reservation for the Platinum AWD. At the time I placed the reservation, all the Nissan pics of the blue interior, which was the only choice for Platinum looked more like a dark and light grey interior. Now I've seen more recent pics and videos and I can't stand the baby blue interior. I really can't understand why this would be the only option for the top spec trim. I ordered red exterior. Red exterior with baby blue interior is just plain terrible. Nissan, give the top trim the charcoal option!

In fact, in Europe the charcoal trim is the stardard one on the top spec, the blue nappa interior is always a paid option over the top spec. I ordered the top spec with the charcoal interior.

I went on a test drive to see if it was suitable for replacing my 30kwh Leaf. It does tick lots of boxes but it didn't really float my boat. The interior may look nice when new and cleaned but all those haptic buttons get polished by oily fingers as it was in the demo car I tried. You then have fascia with shiny dots on it, worse than piano black plastic. The cabin also doesn't sound right, there is a sort of tinny hollow sound to it and a faint reverberation. I thought the BZ4X was a better car in a lot of ways ( just a shame about the wheel nuts and the winter range issues with it).

Another SUV...moving on to cars : what about the Ioniq 6? No video yet ? And the refreshed Polestar 2 ? Some serious contenders in the market that still is dominant in Europe, despite what one might think, being bombarded all day long with SUVs : the sedan. Even more importantly, the BEV sedan. So when can we expect a - mega - comparative test between the established power - Tesla 3, the new kid on the block - Ioniq 6, the comeback - Polestar 2 and the BMW I4 (which is too expensive and with absurd waiting lists, but still a good pretender) ?

The Ioniq 6 has just arrived in the UK with only a handful of channels being allowed a drive of a couple of hours each. We wait until we can spend a bit more time with the car and give a more detailed review after we have lived with it for a few days. The new Polestar 2 was only released today (give us some time, at least!) but a big group test is something that we have considered for the future. Last year, we did a triple test between the Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and the BMW i4 which is still available on our channel. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment,

Yes, I mentioned a future comparative test based upon the one you did with the King & the two contenders. It would be interesting to see in a second group test how the market has changed. For me, the Ioniq 6 is the new king, and the refreshed Polestar 2 is his second. The BMW I4 and the Tesla can compete for the last place. And once the BMW i5 pushes the boundaries (especially in its break form) the Tesla will finally have it's rightful place : last. As is always should have, - except for the range - with it's fidgety suspensions, chocolate brakes, absurd ergonomics and general poor build quality (not to mention the Musk factor)...

Hattiesburg, Mississippi Nissan dealer sticker price inc!using phony add ons, plus 5% state sales tax $54,500.00. Sticker indicated range 280 miles. Appears to me a difficult sell! Too much money and too little range.

Imo it looks like a non aerodynamic brick. With CCS DC fast charging in US it's an expensive paperweight . You'll hate the charging infrastructure in the USA . Tesla competition??? Not even in the same galaxy

In which way? I have driven tje Ariya now for 2700 km during the last month. Winter range (temperatures from -28 to 0 degrees celsius and snowy/wet roads) has been from 380-430 km. I espect the real summer range to be something like 420-500 km depending on avg speed.

I respectfully disagree. The Model Y is a very spacious car, I will give you that, but the Ariya is a much more resolved car to drive, and far superior in the quality of the materials used and fit and finish. The Tesla’s chassis isn’t as good as the Nissan’s and don’t get me started in the Model Y’s atrocious ride quality.

@@AutoEV The newer Teslas supposedly have new suspension which fixes the ride quality. I test drove a 2023 model Y last week and it seems fine, I never drove an older one though. I haven't driven an Ariya yet. I'll have to take your word for it on the interior, although from what I saw the Tesla with white leather seats felt like I was in the VIP section of a club. What do you mean about the chassis? I thought the Tesla had the highest safety rating and was built from the ground up to be a chassis built around their own batteries? I also read that Even though the Ariya battery is bigger, it has worse range. I was initially going to buy an Ariya until I learned more about each, and I haven't found a single thing the Nissan is better at. If you want to fill me in on what 'resolved car to drive' and 'superior chassis' mean I'm all ears.

@@100toeface when I discuss chassis dynamics I’m talking about the car’s behaviour on road. I wholeheartedly agree that the Tesla is a very safe car, in terms of stability, but so are many of its competitors, the Ariya included. What I’m talking about is how the Nissan is able to keep you engaged with the drive of the car whilst isolating you from raid imperfections. This is where the Model Y falls down. It seems unable to isolate harsher surfaces, undulations and sharp ridges from the occupants. A car with good chassis dynamics will keep these within the suspension and platform. The Tesla can’t. It sends a lot of the shock of what the wheels are doing through the car structure, making it known to the occupants. I’ve also found (and have spoken with many owners who have admitted the same) that there can also be a very strange pitching motion as the dampers seem unable to deal with the changing road conditions. The front suspension is still dealing with the after effects of a bump by the time the rears hit it. This type of behaviour can make for an uncomfortable car to be in. Now, I admit, I haven’t driven a 23 MY Model Y, but we will be featuring one on the channel soon in a triple test against two main rivals, so if this has changed since I last drove one, I will say so. As far as the interior is concerned, I do like the Model Y in terms of the driver interface (although I still think it should have a heads-up display for safety) but I don’t agree in terms of the materials used. The leather (which isnt) feels too unnatural to me, and whilst the seats are cushioned well, they don’t offer the support many rivals do. And again, with the failings of the chassis, you never (well I certainly don’t) feel I’m control, especially with the performance on offer. The Tesla does win for efficiency however, and of course, the access to Tesla’s network, which is a powerful argument in its favour. But I’d urge you to drive a comparable Ariya before making any assumptions. It’s a supremely capable car that deserves to be considered. I rate it much higher than the a Tesla.
