I'm no chassis structural designer, but I'd imagine you want to be careful not to overdo chassis strengthening too. We all know chassis' are designed to crumple in certain places in the event of crash, and also they need a certain amount of flex in order to allow the vehicle to handle and drive correctly. As this is a restoration vehicle I'd say go for it, but if the average Joe Bloggs welder watches this, I'd say take caution where you weld in additional box sections on your D40 it could give you a nasty surprise when you next drive it. I'll be interested to see how your project goes though mate...

You better have a disclaimer when you do such work. Someone will watch this video and because you say it works well in strengthening the chassis and adds more life to it. They will then replicate it and should they have an accident and insurance find such welds done. Trust me they will put the blame on it. It won't matter if it made the chassis stronger. Just my 2 cents.

we had lorries where welding was not allowed on chassis, bolt on additions only . the chassis can crack next to the weld

If you do those modifications on the frame, I doubt you would ever get insurance to drive it on the roads, or even get an MOT pass. THE INVENTOR OF THE CRUMPLE ZONE Béla Barényi was an engineer and inventor who spent most of his career working for Daimler-Benz. His name appears on more than 2,500 patents. One of those patents, issued in 1952, explains how a car could be designed with areas at the front and rear built to deform and absorb kinetic energy in an impact. He put the concept to use in 1959 on the Mercedes-Benz W111 Fintail, the first car to use crumple zones [source: German Patent and Trade Mark Office].

It will strengthen the rear, but it’ll come at the cost of transferring the impact energy further down the chassis to the next section that doesn’t have the after market cross bars - right under the cabin. The chassis may well crumple under the cabin in a rear end shunt. I suspect it’s been designed with the sacrificial weakest sections at the rear and front with the beefiest in the centre where the occupants sit.

What - in my opinion as an ex body engineer from Jaguar Land Rover this is nuts. Don’t disagree that adding triangular sections will increase the strength, problem is do you want to. These vehicles are designed to crush in crash in a certain way to protect the occupant. If you do this you delete all the crush zones and make the car crumple deform in a way that is not expected. My advice - just don’t do this!!

Trouble is the chassis rusts from the inside so all the primers and anti rust paint wont help. Galvanising the chassis is the only real option. As for welding in box sections seem a bit Heath Robinson.

I don't think you can recommend modifying a chassis that is known to have a problem and say that its fine after that cos you reckon it is . the manufacturer would need to approve a repair too deem it safe ... but anyway in the real world i reckon its probably fine too . but you cant really tell people to do that .

crumple zones? welding these triangles will completely negate the design features...be careful!

In the first minute of the video I can see you did not do anything with the inside of the chasis. The inside of the chasis is the root cause of the rust problem, what you did was just a cosmetic job.

Off topic a bit, but is it possible to fit the D40, 6 speed gearbox into a 2014 D22 and would that lower revs on the YD25 on the freeway at 110kmh

It's a big job, but why bother when the engines are notoriously unreliable, - it's a double whammy crap structure, crap engine, equals not worth it.

That road salt kills the chassis in less than years. Navarro's among other vehicle chassis had problems yet the manufacturer did nothing...

So.... what does Nissan say about this 🤔 I know a lot about steel .... these can rot from the inside.... fill them with expanding foam.

What on earth is a shazzy? It is pronounced chassis. Welding as you suggest is madness as well as negating insurance, any car guarantee, any safety construction and probably highly illegal. Your own operators insurance would probably run a mile when a claim was brought against you for someone who died in an accident driving a Datsun with your modification. Apology, but are you really sure about this? Easy to disprove any fears we may have in your next video. Please.
