This quick little video attempts to explain how the nitrogen cycle works in a pond and how to keep it safe and healthy.
A heathy nitrogen cycle will almost guarantee that the pond remains clear, clean and healthy naturally. Working with nature to create a self sustaining ecosystem within the pond.
This means very little maintenance and more time enjoying a perfect man made aquatic environment.

Do you think it would be safe to swim in the pond water? Im interested in building something bigger so you could use it has like a mini pool.

Depends on the pond. Most of the time no.

Oz do you think I can just get a bottle of water from a natural pond and it will have bacteria enough? Like will it spread quickly or do you think I should buy it. I know I can get from Amazon or something but this pond is down the street.

The bacteria occurs naturally, but getting some existing pond water might contain some beneficial organisms and bacteria. They mostly cling to wet surfaces so if you got a rock, a plant, etc that would definitely jump start the population.

@@Ozponds dude, I still have a slow leak driving me crazy. I think it's where I tried using some liner to bridge gap between my filter and the rocks stacked for waterfall. What do you do to get it to work? I ran the actual pond liner up my barrel as to avoid losing water from drips and such. Then used silicon to stick a scrap piece inside the barrel and onto my rock stack. I cut one side of the barrel a couple of inches shorter so it has some kinks but damn I've been fighting it for days now and am thinking there's a better way. Maybe drill holes and put little pieces of 1/2 inch stubbed out? I dunno. Wondering your take on it

I use a uniseal and have a pipe running out of the barrel. Then I disguise the pipe with rock, wood, plants, ect. It is water tight, hidden and can then start a stream, waterfall, whatever you like. It’s nature so it varies. 6-8 weeks is super safe. You can speed it up by seeding with bacteria products or existing pond water or filter media. Still add fish slowly over time is best practice.

Why should I? If you want to overload your pond go for it! All filtration is about balancing bio loads. Less bio load less work for the filters. It’s simple. It’s like putting too many cows in a paddock and going “oh poor me, I need to buy in food and manage health issues” meanwhile the farmer down the road is under stocked, has healthy cattle and plenty of feed. I know which farmer I’d prefer to be! Why make it hard if it doesn’t need to be?
