Welcome to the Camppatton Family Compound,
I'm back at it with the Harbor Freight concrete mixer. This time I'm mixing and pouring over four pallets of 60 lb. sack mix. 13,680+ pound of concrete by hand to get ready for a 14 cubic yard pour. Why? Watch and find out as I explain in the video. I'll also show how to do edging and broom finishing.

We have the same mixer here in Australia distributed by Ozito and a lot of people have the same complaint about the fact you can't get a wheelbarrow under it. The obvious answer is to move the mixer to the job and after the concrete is mixed just dump it onto the ground. In other words just cut out the wheelbarrow entirely. That mixer has a width of 660mm which would easily fit between that formwork.

Tried that, didn't work. It made a big splatter mess and I had to move it with each batch. And then I had to carry the bags to it as it moved each patch. Blocking it up works so much better.

Far more interested in seeing how well the HF Mixer works, than the details of the project. A lot of the latter, and not enough of the former.

You're the first that requested this. I have some more to do this summer so I'll show the mixing inside the drum and the good and the bad and how to add the mix so you don't get build up behind the vanes.

I'm starting a project using the 80 pound 5000 plus. I was wondering did you use more than a gallon per bag? Also when you did the hand float, how much time after to smooth again? Do you moist it again before smoothing?
@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 2 жыл бұрын
When mixing concrete I mix several bags at a time. I put a gallon in to start and add until it is the right consistency. Sometimes I want it thicker other times thinner. You screte with a board to level, then Immediately you use a wood float to work the larger rocks down and the cream to the surface. Then in about 10-15 minutes you can start using a bull float (the big wide one) , this works more rock down and more cream up. In a hour you can use a mag float to start the good finish. Then about an hour later do the mag float again if needed. When it is firm but still damp use a steel float to finish, Then you use a fine bristle broom for final texture so it is not too smooth and slippery. A lot of this I leaded on the job over years from journeymen concrete finishers

@@CamppattonFamilyCompound since I'm doing a 8 inch thick and 1ft and a half tall retaining wall. Do I use a regular hand float? I'm not sure if there is different kinds. Thanks again for the help. I'm doing my first backyard project. I would like to learn this. Its interesting.

@@smallnuts2 I have always had trouble with concrete retaining walls and as such I have done brick and mortar or the stacking wall blocks and poured concrete behind so they don't shift. There are several types of floats; wood, mag or magnesium, steel. For edge work, the floats/trowels are steel. These are what you use to put the lip or rounded edge, the lines or groves in the sidewalks and retaining walls When pouring concrete in a form, tap the form with a 4 lb. hammer to get the air bubbles out and cause the rock to "bounce" away from the form so cream can slide in, so when you remove the forms you can work the surface to make it work nice. Concrete work is a several hour to all day job. you might check with the day labors outside of home depot beforehand and find one that has his own tools and make arrangement to get one for help.

I normally mix 2-3 depending on how the mixer is setup, always add some water first or it’s gonna be sticky especially if you toss multiple bags in without a bit of water to help it stay loose and moving. Amount of water can vary thou depending on if you need it we’re or dryer, currently I mix mine a little bit wetter because of the heat and no cloudy days so been drying a bit faster. Never really touch up after I did the first smooth but haven’t done to many pads but I have seen people moist it up again for another smooth.

Not with the minimum charge. What I did was just under 4 cubic yards. I have to order 9 yards to avoid the charge. and I can't do it a my pace, that is very important.

@@michaelhaiducek2648 A truck could not get back to the pour site. And having two others are not plenty. If I am pouring from a truck I need 4 wheelbarrowers, two on scret board, two raking and two mag floaters. If we are doing back to back trucks add four finishers.

@@CamppattonFamilyCompound Back in the day My Brother & I have poured & finished a 5 yard truck ourselves with only a Screed board & Bull Float... Now days 1 man can run a power screed & you can rent a concrete pump with remote control for a day for less than the price of a wheel barrow that can pump 25yrds/hr 500'ft away from the truck. So 1 man on the hose & 1 man on the power screed can pour a 9 yard truck load in 21 minutes. The truck allows 5 minutes per yard, so you finish well under the 45 minutes they give you.
@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhaiducek2648 If you have the money to throw away on renting all that stuff and the price of a pump is way more that that, it is a couple hundred for a day (minimum rate). And trucks have never given more than 30 minutes from the time they arrive on site.

Did you leave your forms in between the sections for control joints or did you pour it straight up against the concrete?

@@CamppattonFamilyCompound so is there any space between the different sections? I have seen some people leave a 1x between sections for a joint. I’m getting ready to pour a rather large slabs and it going to be divided into 6 squares just debating on the best way to do the joints between the sections.
@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 2 жыл бұрын
@@beanieweenie9543 No space between. In fact on large single pours there are two ways of doing it. 1) Lines are put in with a special tool after the concrete has been worked with a Bull Float, but before the Fresno Float work starts. 2) a machine is used for "no line" pours. Now if you are doing it is several pours (like I did), Use an edging tool (shown at 8:59 in the video) on not only the outside edges, but the joining edges as I did starting at 16:49

@@CamppattonFamilyCompound That was a 7.65 yard pour. It would have been cheaper & less labor to order a ready mix cement truck. If you are actually trying to save money, have rock & sand delivered, then buy bags of portolan cement & mix your own. 3 buckets of gravel, 2 buckets of sand, 1 bucket cement & 1/2 bucket water.

I wanted to put PEX in under the concrete like my neighbor just did, but the wife didn't think it was worth the money. A snow blower and bio ice melt will have to do. So long as I get to it before the pets or anyone else walks on it, it is easy to clear.

?? Where did I miss the "reason" for mixing all that by hand and not calling a truck? Stronger mix by truck. I wouldn't trust those premix bags for anything that actually needs a true psi rating.

@CamppattonFamilyCompound 2 жыл бұрын
I talked about need to work the edge next to the building at the beginning of the video and you can't do that with a large pour. At 3 minutes in, I talked about needing to do multiple pours because of elevation differences of the different pads. Also the trucks can not get in to pour directly and the standby charge for wheelbarrowing it would double the cost and well as charging for short loads, if I did a couple yards at a time. I talked about the truck access issue on the previous video on mixing concrete with the Harbor freight mixer.
