No. 83 - Mixing 7,010 lbs. of Concrete by Hand With Harbor Freight Concrete mixer
Welcome to the Camppatton Family Compound, I'm rehabbing this old property that had been neglected for years and trying to get it into shape for our retirement home. This project is to keep the area between the house and garage from becoming a mud hole and water from working down into the basement this winter like it has in years past. To do this I had to pour a concrete pad there by hand as we couldn't get a concrete truck in to pour it. Fun stuff … NOT!

Nice, I'm currently in the middle of a pretty big project as well. To make it easier I built a gantry with a sliding harborfreight electric hoist to pick up the bags off the truck and slide over onto the cement mixer. Really saves the back and makes it a lot more manageable. Good work though!

@@kbanghart Yupp I'm about half way through my project (roughly 105 80lbs bags). I wish I could get a pump truck lol I have it down to a science now though thanks for the offer! Now I just need the weather to cooperate.. How'd your project turn out? ... I'll say this little mixer is a little under powered, in my humble opinion, but it's been soild a rock so far and has been more than pulling it weight (knock on wood).

If you really want to you can get rid of the discoloration by scrubbing with hot soapy water. It may not look bad in the area you poured it but when you are doing 5X5 concrete pads for the front walkway to a house it's important for the pads to look uniform.

spray a retarter on the concrete when you pour , then hose off and you will get an exposed rock finished, and it won't be slippery

Exposed rock, or as it is called exposed aggregate, it a lot more slippery than any level of broom and rinse finish. When I was done it was like sand paper. Spraying sugar water or cola on it works the same as a restarter, for less money.

Just finished underpinning my house used sand and gravel and mixed my own , dug about 15 yards of earth by hand over past year now house is underpinned and drainage added thinking about using bags for the slab for consistency and logistics of it, its 110 year old house. My question is how big of an area did you cover in one go and did you have any trouble in different drying times due to time difference in loading and dumping
@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 2 жыл бұрын
YT keeps deleting my reply when I'm half way done. I did lap taper pours with the last bit of the previous pour left very rough so the next pour would get a good bite. also I mixed the first load of the next pour rich with Portland cement and sand to get extra grabbing power. It took me three pours because I am old and needed breaks. the mixing times didn't affect the pours as I made it with more slump (wet) for the first loads and a little less with each load there after so it dried fairly evenly.

Good question. Yes it will. It will handle 2 1/2 80 pound bags or 3 1/4 60 pound bags., but I try to limit it to 2 & 3 just in case I put too much water in and need to add a little more dry mix to fix it right.

Ok just wondering why you broke up all that concrete off of that slab? That's a lot of extra work and more concrete to buy and pour out. Couldn't you just cut in the new concrete over the partial slab? And you should put up some rain gutters on the side of both buildings then you have a set area the runoff would go to.
@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 3 жыл бұрын
The concrete that I had to remove was not part of the garage slab. It appeared to be some sort of excess that had been dumped there before the garage was built. it protruded up into where the new slab would be and would have caused it to crack along there as the new concrete would have been too thin. No one has rain gutters here because they can not be used. They get torn off by the snow in the winter time.

@@CamppattonFamilyCompound 1,2,3 is a rule of thumb that I've followed and had good results from. Mainly sidewalks and slabs (shed, patio) and a few steps. Looking it up online 1,2,3 makes 4,000psi concrete and is a 6.5 sack mix (6.5 sacks of portland per cubic yard of concrete). In reality you get to do what your building inspector allows some will only allow boughten concrete, others bags like you had. Additionally in my experience river rock makes a far more durable and easy to work mix though it is more expensive . I found this to be a good resource www.everything-about-concrete.com/concrete-mix-ratios-for-3000-3500-4000-psi-concrete.html

@CamppattonFamilyCompound
@CamppattonFamilyCompound 4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't the footer. It wasn't even attached in any way. The other side and the backside have none. The garage floor is just a slab without re-enforcement wire or rebar that the old skinflint who owned the property poured on the cheap. A neighbor said the old man had a friend at the ready mix place that would dump excess concrete there over the years. When he build the garage, he got a load of gravel and spread it about an inch thick over what the friend had been dumping there and then pour the slab and built the garage without inspection or permits.
@smitty_1
@smitty_1 4 жыл бұрын
@@CamppattonFamilyCompound gotcha. I was thinking if someone poured a monolithic slab it may have been the footer.
