It's a cellular IPad with a SIM, although you don't need a SIM to use the GPS .I just happened to have the IPad and it works well.if i were spending money, I would probably look at an Android tablet as most of them have the GPS chipset built in and are a great deal cheaper. I have Navionics, savey Navey and CMap loaded, Really like CMap but keep going back to Navionics.

I have added some bits to my Shrimper (592), mostly so I feel safer going across to Normandy from E. Sussex - which is a much nicer coast to sail along. My ipad is a 2nd hand basic version and then some good value 'black box' bits to add wifi and AIS. Navionics is pretty seamless and the wifi means fewer cables.
