Hi - I'm really interested in how you have mounted your VHF. I have one fitted but your location looks so much better. Could you let me have some detail about how it's mounted please as I don't see any fittings through the coachroof? My sail number is 237. Thanks! :)

Hi. It's hanging from the simple bracket supplied with the unit. The bracket is screwed into the underside of the coachroof ceiling, where the edge of the companionway starts. That companionway frame (capped with the wooden hatch runner) is quite thick and there is room to firmly fix a couple of short fat screws to secure the bracket. I don't know if it's solid, cored or has a void but the underside is glassed and the screws bite really well. The VHF sits almost flush to the ceiling (just the width of the bracket) and the front panel lip fits perfectly over the bead on the companionway edge. I can unscrew the thumbscrews each side and remove the radio easily if needed. I'm pleased with the position, It's very usable (and audible) from the cockpit without being mounted outside (we've not used the handheld since it was installed). It doesn't get in the way when going below, although i have turned it on by accident a couple of times brushing past it. Hope this helps, I'm not at the boat ATM but can take some pictures week after next if helpful.

@@Morningvicar Hi and many thanks for the quick response. That sounds great and I think I have everything I need to make the switch. I'd still appreciate some pictures, particularly detail of where you've screwed it in and also how you've run the cables. I'm thinking of adding a false bulkhead so that I can have a better electrical arrangement with all the cables hidden behind it. Things are getting pretty untidy now, what with an automatic bilge pump, sounder and log etc so I think the false bulkhead would be a good solution. It will be just the same as the existing one but I'll put spacers behind it to create a void for the cables and the backs of switches. Are you on the Shrimperowners forum?

No worries, I'll take some pics in a week or so. My wiring is also a mess and a complete rewire is probably my next project (winter perhaps). A false bulkhead is a good idea. I am a member of the Forum but don't contribute very often. Regards

Hi again and just to let you know I moved my VHF to the same position and I'm delighted with it! Thanks for the advice.
