We found a monkey tied up while exploring Indonesia. We faced the difficult challenge of purchasing it and setting it free or leaving it alone.

I’m a disabled veteran with an immense passion for our wildlife and outdoors. I truly wish I could get outdoors more, I just don’t have the resources with my level of disability. Thank you for your advocacy. What you’re doing is making such an impact. I truly appreciate it and look forward to seeing what you accomplish. As someone who no longer gets to enjoy the outdoors, I empathize so much with this situation. It’s heartbreaking. Thank you for shining light on it.

For the first 30 years of my life, I lived in the Southern and Southwestern US and saw similar situations involving both domesticated and wild animals. It was not at all unusual to see signs for roadside attractions containing everything from bears to pumas to alligators…nearly all in horrific conditions. When we lived in Arizona, a rancher a mountain lion he had rescued as a cub. When he came to town for groceries, he chained her outside the grocery store while he shopped. My mother lost herself in books, so I managed to sneak out of the car and cuddle her…she purred when I scratched her head and was very soft. Her eyes were so beautiful. I was 14 and am now 73 and every moment with her is clear and present in my memory. The mountain lion was the only exotic animal I saw without the hundred yard stare I saw in the poor creatures in the roadside attractions. From the local gossip she had the run of the ranch house and a huge enclosure. I doubt she went on any cattle drives, but anytime we saw him in town, she was always with him. There were no sanctuaries then and he treated her very well, but today there is no need and I hope it will soon become illegal except for accredited facilities and licensed and properly trained owners. Both should be regularly inspected.

If we want to help stop humans abusing animals we have to first help stop humans from being abused... ie economic slavery, colonisation and depletion of other nations natural resources. The little monkey has a chain attached to his leg. The people there also have chains on their legs, it’s called poverty.

Humans are like apes and some apes take dogs for pets so in a way it’s all part of the cycle. Things live, die, live in health and freedom or suffer in imprisonment, it’s part of the cycle we just have to do our best to promote balance, health and freedom. There are no pests in nature only life forms that over encroach on the survival of another form of life. Even parasites have a role in the dynamics of biology. Humans are “animals” too, it’s a collective, we just need to live in some form of balance. Forest here doesn’t cry when a alligator or lion plays with its food or when an ape takes a dog for a pet because he’s viewing humans as seperate from all other organisms on earth. Also he gets to go back to his comfortable home and money, the people in this video are in extreme poverty, these are two very different perspectives, it’s easy to project morality from a much better environmental situation.
