Thank you for your perspective on creators once known for their „no buy”-ish endeavors now, with development of their channels begin to advertise more and more even if the content used to be catered towards people who also struggle with overconsumption. I feel like it’s still a topic not talked about enough
@svetlanadreher7190

I agree. And sometimes it feels like they recycle the old content just to put in sponsorships in new videos. I already unsubscribed from some people who were basically just making repeating videos for ads. I know that’s how they make money but if there is no value in the video for me why would I watch the ads?

I HATE to throw people under the bus and I'm definitely not trying to judge but yes, I loved watching and being inspired by their "no buy" or "less shopping to pursue financial goals" or otherwise conscious consumerism type content, and as the channels slowly transitioned to more "typical influencing" and talking a lot about products I found myself really missing the old subjects. I want to find out if there's a way to escape from the trap of constantly pursuing and acquiring new stuff!
@Alexas.nobuyyear

Yes I really notice this too, recycled topics and even the same exact clips of b-roll from multiple videos. I'm not trying to be judgemental but to me it feels more like a "production" than authentic life. While it might be working for their channels, I really don't want to go in this direction here, even if it keeps things "lower budget"...😅

@@Alexas.nobuyyear as someone who struggles with overconsumption I noticed that it gets even harder after the emergency fund is in place. When those big goals are hit it’s harder to find motivation not to spend. The only next big goal is a house and for me it seems too unachievable. I would love to see more content on how to change the behavior without employing will power to hit the goal. More as a new lifestyle and philosophy. Not much content about that. Mostly just let’s sprint to paying off debt and we’ll see what happens next!
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 ай бұрын
@@svetlanadreher7190 I'm actually ALREADY finding it harder to save the emergency fund after doing the sprint and paying off our debt, so I'm kind of working my own way through the "we'll see what happens next" phase right now! But removing the ability to "buy" this year (which is another kind of "sprint") has helped at least make more consistent contributions to the emergency fund than we ever have before, so at least there's that. One thing I am doing at the moment is reading several different books about focus, comfort, productivity (and therefore habits, in a way)...with several different viewpoints and approaches. My plan is to share and summarize anything useful after I process all the new info, I'm hoping to find ideas for things to try that go beyond willpower. I'll let you know if I find anything that works for me! And thank you for sharing, ideas like these always make me think! And when I think about things, I make more progress...I think? 😅

"Nobody needs leather pants!" A true statement! Need is an interesting concept! We really need very little. "Want" is a very different mind set. When our needs are met we begin to dream of added possibilities. Our eye catches something. Oooo! that looks nice! If we are smart and controlled we allow a certain level of gratification. But so many things can warp our constraint! These videos help to keep the proper balance of want and need!

Sorry to be an enabler, but a good way to get the leather look with comfort are coated cotton jeans. Look like leather from a distance, are breathable and feel like thin stretchy denim.

I agree with personal style being a constantly developing aspect of life, but I am also curious to see whether I can more or less keep the same core pieces for the next decade or so...I do think a lot of what I've let go are more of the pieces that I can't see myself wearing when I'm "old and gray", while a lot of things I have are pieces I CAN actually picture aging with me. I also get really influenced by influencers. It takes a while but one of the best things I’ve done is look at the items I love and wear a lot and figuring out why, how I wear them in multiple situations and - most importantly- keeping all that in mind before I make a purchase decision. 😂 also I don’t think it’s the worst thing if we buy things that aren’t perfect. It may feel like a waste of money, but it’s also a learning experience.

Please check it because it was proven to be a scam - there was an journalist investigation by someone in Sweden where they put airtags in items then discarded to H&M - those clothes were not recycled but sent to Uganda (not sure if it was this country) where local people have to deal with it. Really good observations. I also have a duplicate problem. And I've learned I cannot buy merch from creators I like. It never looks as good on me and it's such a novelty. I end up almost never wearing it and it's impossible to resale.

@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 ай бұрын
The only merch I've purchased is actually one of my favorite sweatshirts, (the one with the wave on it) and a tshirt with an embroidered bumblebee and musical phrase. It is definitely a novelty but it's not branded in any way (except for general classical music branding), so it works for me, and I'll never lose that aspect of my life - but definitely agree on general merch, it can be dangerous because we will inevitably move on from that phase of our lives and then what to do with it?

Thank you! I think the other thing about that one is that it feels very not "me" - I don't wear "elevated black" unless I'm performing, it's also a little too sophisticated of a style for my comfort level/vibe...and ultimately every time I've put it on, I'd rather wear something else 🤷‍♀️

If that holey sweater is wool, I'd advise you to check your home for moths. The hole looked suspiciously large to have emerged from just normal wear... And thank you for making this content, I'm working on my own (luckily smaller) shopping issues and it's good to be able to watch some relatable content. I'm rarely influenced to buy anything directly, but my problem is that I see inspiration everywhere. Like, people make videos about gardening or something else non-style-related and wear cute stuff while doing so, and I find myself thinking that I'd like something similar 😅
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 ай бұрын
I think I discovered the reason for the hole, which is that one of the outfits I tried on included my zip-up leather jacket and I must have caught the front of the sweater in the zip. So fingers crossed that it's not moths! And likewise I also used to be caught by the random/incidental exposures to products and other things...not everyone does it (and not saying the gardening channels are doing this!) but sometimes even those exposures are tied to affiliate links or other ways for the creators to make money too, so sometimes even that is not as random as it seems these days 👀 Haha

I never hear folks talking about warm vs cool toned blues but - yes! We are color opposites and everything you let go based on color is one of my core colors, except hot pink ;) I’m usually not tempted to buy much based on being influenced, but I noticed that HLP gets me to buy stuff more than anyone- even though she’s clearly being careful about that, maybe even because she’s being careful. I do notice that I like and use the stuff I was influenced to get, but I can’t afford to be tempted as often as I am so I’ve had to take long HLP breaks to cool off. It’s a funny part of the ecosystem. Can I suggest Leena Norms? If you don’t already watch her you’d probably be into her stuff. She’s patreon funded and almost never (or maybe never?) does ads.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 ай бұрын
Yes I think you've hit on something that HLP is particularly effective at "influencing" because she is careful about it - it feels like anything she recommends is curated and perhaps more likely to be higher value. And I do also like most of what I was influenced to buy from her channel too! But when I reflect on all the "influenced purchases" I've made, the clothing in particular is often decluttered...so I was probably buying for some kind of fantasy self instead of my reality. I do always get excited when I see HLP post a new video specifically about "not shopping" though...it might not be her money-making content these days, but it's always my favorite. I'll check out Leena Norms, thanks for the recommendation!

Wonderfully lucid and interesting as usual! I watch most of the creators you mention, mostly out of habit and curiosity now, because it’s kind of dismaying how they started out as ascetic gurus and now went back to being the crew-chasing fashion girlies they claimed to have renounced, though there’s still something interesting and useful to be found there. I’m absolutely pro fashion and style, I just can’t take seriously people who favor new trendy pieces that cost hundreds and only if there’s a designer name attached. That’s not style, that’s being a covert Formula 1 driver with brand names plastered all over your outfit. One of them was upset the other day because a GQ writer made fun of people who buy like that. (Oh noes, I have lost the good opinion of some guy at GQ, but also he’s right.) One good piece of advice that stayed with me from Patricia 1.0 was to go to the trouble of reselling our items as you’re doing. The time pain and tedium of that helps prevent future similarly impulse purchases. The volume stays present delaying the impression of space for new stuff. I think about that now even with thrifting. Every piece requires washing, maybe tailoring, finding room for, putting away, logging, considering when getting dressed, putting away and taking out seasonally maybe, evaluating for declutters over several years, as well as possibly eventually reselling. Every piece not purchased saves all that time. Personally I also use the store credit for any new wants, thereby converting e.g. four discards into one new, reducing overall volume and no fresh actual money going out. Please stop putting yourself down: you’re clearly so accomplished and expressive! Really enjoy your work. Wishing you continued savings and reduced hassle in future! (:

I LOVE your thoughtful comments as always too. "Ascetic gurus" - wonderful description. I don't claim to be one, but my goal is definitely to adopt this as a lifestyle beyond a no buy year, because despite having a "love of beautiful things" I also have a deep sense that "having enough" is even MORE aspirational, and the contentment that that attitude fosters is more valuable than chasing desires. And thank you for your compassion! I think part of it is that the "me of today" is putting down Alexa 1.0 (love how you talked about advice from Patricia 1.0 haha) before she started the no-buy in earnest and really thought about changing this behavior pattern...and after reflecting a lot this year I find it almost unbelievable the things I used to think and do, while at the same time I realize firsthand how easy it could be to fall back into those patterns. I'm beginning to think that the solution is to remain in a state of constant "reluctance to buy" even if it's not an outright "no buy" - and even as I think about that it strikes me as slightly ridiculous because I remember back in the 90s-early 2000s, a "reluctance to buy" was just my family's (and my) normal way of living whereas now I have to intentionally set those parameters. Thank you for inspiring even more reflection! 🥰

Just found your channel at the perfect time. I just bought a house (yay!) that has about a 2 foot wide closet (oh no) and we're moving soon and it has forced me to come to terms with my fashion addiction. I have decided to do a low buy for the remainder of the year after selling off most of my horde. It's going to be quite a challenge as I only have four "gaps" in my closet of things I actually need, and I am going to say no to anything else. This may be the hardest thing I have ever done as I don't have many vices except for buying clothing and boy was it a problem. My situation was much worse than yours six months ago but I've managed to get things down to only things I actually love and wear and it will now fit in our closet and our drawers. I have unfollowed many people and deleted apps and told all of my friends and family not to buy me clothing and hopefully this will make things easier. Just think of all of the money we are going to save!

I watch a lot of KZfaq and now I really can’t take someone seriously if every video is sponsored..I understand that creators deserve to be compensated but it is too much now. Especially when everyone is pushing the same five sponsors 😂 I’ve learned the same lesson about duplicates and I almost fell into that trap with a dress but stopped myself before checking out. Win! It gets easier to resist over time. I personally like doing no buy months and then the rest of the year doing a low buy. The crazy thing is the sponsorships definitely used to work on me, but now that it's becoming so much it's actually less effective and I'm probably not the only one that feels that way! And yay for your win in spotting the duplicates! 🎉 I think the idea of no buy months is much more realistic as well, in some ways it's easier to "wait a month" for something you might actually kind of need or benefit from, whether or not you actually decide to purchase the thing, than it is to decide whether to break a whole no buy year or not because maybe you forgot about a specific scenario that you don't have something you need for.

I personnally loose interest in a creator if they push a black/white/beige capsule waredrobe on me. 1) its not creative 2) its not construtive for the average women and 3) i'm not sure its take into account a lot of different lifestyle. I've been running another self-imposed challenge alongside my no-buy, which is to see how long I can go without repeating an outfit. I've been going since December and it's not even been a struggle yet 😅 which definitely suggests I own a bit too much clothing, especially as I'm six months pregnant so lots of my stuff doesn't fit at the moment 🙈

I did wear the Beatles shirt a lot actually! I think something about the light green makes me feel washed out though compared to other options, so for now I've at least put it away. Honestly if I'm not "going out" I'm usually in sweatpants and a t-shirt and use my "camera appearances" as an excuse to wear nicer tops 🫢 Babaa is definitely one of those brands and price points where I think the "best/realistic" way is to really think about what one or two pieces would best serve, and save for those...I noticed HLP seemed to accumulate quite a few Babaa pieces after her initial first few, and this is where it got a bit unrealistic for me! I love the no outfit repeating challenge! I was kind of trying that with the "75 hard style" in shorts, but I just can't keep it up with short form content for whatever reason, and once again if I'm just staying home I do tend to wear the same handful of lounge sweats so...😅 I'll get back to the clothes curation when work starts up again in Fall, perhaps!

I do not think it is necessarily bad to buy things that are trendy to try, but maybe how you buy them is bad. I know you are tall which complicates things, my mother was tall, and I am petite. Stores often do not carry either of those sizes, but I find it helpful to try on things before buying. I try on everything that catches my eye in the store for the fun of it. That helps me narrow down silhouettes, patterns and colors that work for me and which ones that do not. I prefer to buy things online that I can easily return if they do not work. The hard part about shopping in store is that most stores do not sell quality natural fabrics anymore. I also think the more you try the more you narrow down your style. Sure this takes some time money and mistakes, but in a few years time you will probably be set in your style ways. The problem with that is your favorite silhouette will go out of style and it will be hard to find it used. I found The Curated Closet by Anuschka Rees to be a fun read, which has helped me narrow down my style and balance what I buy to what I need and will use.

I've read The Curated Closet and might need to revisit! I'm getting closer to a point where I feel like I already have all the styles I need and like, and if I can just pare down the "trend-clutter" that's not really representative of MY style (instead of my "influenced" style) I'll be in a much better place with my wardrobe. I do plan to cover this in future videos too! 😅

I used to watch A Small Wardrobe a lot, i bought some organic basics stuff on her reccomendation but was pretty dissapointed with the quality.

Same! I understand that the prices were probably reflective more of sustainability goals etc. than quality, but I was unpleasantly surprised with the organic basics stuff I had too and had already decluttered those items before this year 👀

I actually haven't gotten around to listing any of this yet - put it off as a later summer project! I'll do a video including those details when I DO manage to list though, (hopefully in the next few weeks) so check back if you're interested! Sorry to be frustrating and not answer directly 😅

Haha well I don't know about "wealthy" but I would certainly have a healthier emergency fund 😂 In all seriousness I do get your point though!

I have unsubscribed from people because of ads/sponsorships as well. I really hate that so many people that I really like are sponsored by BetterHelp. Isn't it a super shitty company that was discovered to be shitty, there was a huge a scandal and now they returned, and EVERYONE is sponsored by them again??? I especially hate, that they pretty much target people with metal illnesses, people who are struggling etc. At this point when a youtuber starts talking about importance of mental health I just know that there is a 99proc. chance that they will go "...and this is why I'm excited that this video is sponsored by BH". When it comes to channels that I was meh about, I unsubscribed. When it comes to the ones that I like, I really struggle. I have no problem with people having sponsorships to earn a living, but not when it supports a trash company... Other ads that I hate are finance related. There are so many popular finance youtubers that people respect/look up to who promoted scams to their followers. I almost fell for some of those as well. Overall, I have quite a weird relationship with ads, sponsored content etc. because I'm someone who has problems with buying stuff to make myself "happy", to feed my "fantasy self" and feel less bored, so I like finding new things to buy, but I'm also super tired of people/companies trying to sell me stuff. I have bought a lot from those ""amazon travel must haves" videos with affiliate links and yet I keep watching them. I think that it's very important to be critical not only of someone's content, but also of how it affects you. So everything you said at around 26:00 makes a lot of sense!

I've heard so much about how problematic they are too! I assume people believe that the principle of mental health is something we should be supporting and therefore a company that at least says they're trying to help is ok to support...but unfortunately that's not really how it works. Same with anything fitness-related or like you said, finance-related...these are all "good" things to take care of (mental health, fitness, our finances) but when companies are creating products to make money using these areas, it almost feels like it can get predatory. Not to blame the individual creators, but it's something I'd be too scared to ever try to associate myself with promoting in that way. I have also become a lot more mindful about what kind of content I'm consuming this year too, and it's making me see those "must have" videos in a totally different way. Thank you for sharing! 😊
