That is my truck and after 2 years of crazy intermittent problems, 1 private mechanic and the Chevy dealership scratching their heads I am soooo happy for my friend recommending Ray to check it out. I admit if I could afford a new truck I would have drove this one into the Gulf. After spending enough on all my repairs I almost paid for a truck. Needless to say I have found my goto mechanic. Very impressed he remembered a issue about water intrusion but the dealership had no clue. Awesome catch

Hey Ray. If you are ever working on a GM and need to know if the module needs to be "programmed" and how to do it you can find it pretty quick in service data. Put in the usual Y/M/M or the VIN in service Info, then in the search look up "control module references." It will take you right to the entire list of all modules and their respective programing and set up procedures using TLC/SPS for GM or anything else that may be needed after the initial programming. Also if you look at the sticker on the module it has the little picture of the half car with a wrench under it I believe it is. That is the "requires programming" symbol 👍🏼 -Cheers Buddy!

Fun battery facts: CR2032: C is for lithium. R is for round. 20 is 20mm diameter. 32 is for 3.2mm thick. CR2025 would therefore be lithium round 20x2.5mm, in other words a bit thinner than a cr2032 and therefore less capacity.

@@procrastinatingnerd maybe coat the connectors and pcb with dielectric grease or something. The module doesn't look that easy to waterproof and it's got some stuff that looks like it dissipates heat so you can't close it off completely. Water tension means the water is going to follow those wires all the way down to the module, even a baggie with a rubber band would be better than what they did with it.

Back ca. 1969 or so, I bought my brother a scientific calculator that probably used a 4-bit processor and thus would take a noticeable (but not inordinate) amount of time to perform a calculation (it's what I could afford at the time). Only my brother would discover that, if you ganged multiple trig or log functions into one command (so that the equation would take a second or two to evaluate), and you held the calculator next to a transistor radio, you would get Outer Limits creepy noise effects. IIRC, it was a Novus calculator.

I used to do a lot of shortwave radio listening. From that I realized that AM radio can "tune in" to lightning. I've frequently been out driving in my car, listening to distant lightning and watching nearby strokes too! For a car, best frequency to use is the lowest AM frequency that doesn't have a station on it.

Nice to see many of you typing "fob" rather than FOB -- because it's a word, after all, not an acronym. It's from the "old days" before people wore watches on their wrists. The fob was a small pocket into which the watch was placed. It comes from the German word fuppe, meaning a small pocket.

@craigsparton
@craigsparton 2 жыл бұрын
@@IcecalGamer So I looked up the wiring diagram for this system. For comparison I took a screenshot at 13:08 in the video and enlarged it. The module only uses three wires but has a 4 terminal connector. The terminal used are 1, 2, and 4 with 3 being blank. Pin 1 is a Red/White wire that supplies battery power to the module, pin 2 is a Dark Green wire than goes to the data bus, pin 4 is a Black/White wire the grounds the module. I mean we already knew the module was wired correctly at the end of the video because it worked after replacement, but I still traced the wires on the screenshot and they are going to the correct pins. So why is there a fourth wire in the connector? Auto manufacturers reuse connectors on many different types of components. I doubt that connector is unique to the RCDLR module. The companies that make these replacement connectors don't want to package different ones for every possible wire combination, so they just fill in all the pins and you use the ones you need.

Many mechanics that have worked on my cars made me feel 'violated'. One chain store that starts with F (that mainly sells tires) did front suspension work on my Silverado for about $2000. It had to be a half a day of work as a minimum after whatever time needed to get the parts delivered. They were done in 3 hours. I believe that some of the parts were not even replaced, instead just wiped down with WD40 to look new. I also discovered later that the shocks they replaced had nuts that were not even finger tight, just barely threaded and about to fall off. Ray is doing a great service to restoring integrity to the profession.

To program new fobs on my 2001 Explorer, all you have to do is turn the ignition on and off rapidly 7 times, when you turn it on the 8th time, the doors lock and unlock, then you just press the lock and then the unlock buttons on each fob you want to program. Turn off the key then start the vehicle and you are good to go. Apparently newer vehicles now require a code scanner with programming mode.

If Chevy is anything like Ford, to program key fobs, you turn the key on and off until the door locks cycle, in Fords, this happens to be 8 times. When this happens, press any key on the new fob. Then try to lock or unlock the doors. If it works, proceed to the next fob. I have replaced my fobs a few times and this method has always worked for me. The important thing to know is, do all the fobs at the same time. Any that you do not reprogram will not work and you will have to go through the whole programing cycle again.

One thing I would have done after seeing the new connector wired on is to verify the wires were connected to the correct pins before plugging that new module in. I never trust someone else's work. If they put the power wire to the wrong pin it could have nuked your new module. It's only three wires, would have been simple to look at the wiring diagram and connector pinout. Otherwise, nice fix. When I saw the flashing TPMS light at the start of the video I was hoping you'd scan the RCDLR, because that module is connected to both systems. (it receives the RF signal from the key fobs and the TPMS sensors in the wheel). It's really hard to fix a corroded PCB like this, mainly because it likes to corrode under the chips and create new and unintended places for current to flow. They made some ultrasonic cleaners that can work but the only real fix sometimes is to remove the chip with a hot air reworks station, clean the board, and hope it didn't fry anything. Best to just replace it like you did. I have fixed quite a few older control modules but modern PCBs with surface mount components are much smaller and harder to work with.

Like the knowledge to not buy a Nissan? Ahh…the Chrysler of Japan. I was an inventory manager at a Nissan dealership, so we bought and sold a lot of used Nissans. We didn’t have a lot of power train related issues other than the Murano head gaskets and the occasional CVT problem, but man did they have a lot of little stupid problems. I don’t remember too many of them with over 60k that didn’t need “something.” Melted sun visors, body seals, window motors, AC compressors, ball joints, etc. The Honda and Toyota like models rarely had any issues at the same mileage. I had a Maxima for a while and once it hit 100k it tried to nickel and dime me to death. My mom had a Rogue and we traded it right before 100k. The CVT started acting goofy and the AC was tepid at best. I obviously wasn’t a tech, but it’s amazing the knowledge you gain from working with cars all day. My job was to get the car to the lot from the time it was bought/traded until it was sold. This included the service reports of all 300+ cars we sold every month. I could almost tell you what was wrong with most models before I even got the inspection report. 2011 Murano with 47k…head gasket. 2009 Silverado with 140k…transmission. 2006 F150 with 112k…ball joints, plugs and coil packs…probably tires too 2008 BMW 328i with 94k…don’t touch it, just send it to the auction. 2006 Titan with 87k…rear differential

Probably not the module was never designed to be waterproof and is used in other models. The issue was the brake light was made with seals that could wear out and when water did penetrate one of the paths it would almost always follow was directly to the module. If they did anything to fix the issue it would likely be change the brake light seal design or material instead of redesigning a module used on multiple models.

Good find Ray! I'm surprised that a busy shop like yours doesn't have a AcDelco TDS subscription for programming GM modules, as common an issue as it gets to be? That's our daily grind at TAE, an auto electric shop in Va Beach, the destination for every electrical/electronic problem the dealers and other shops can't figure out.... we've seen SO MANY corroded computer modules, CAN bus wire harnesses, data lines... and probably the worst offender is blocked sunroof drains... yup, if drivers with sunroofs only had their drains cleared every so often, they could avoid thousands of $$$ in electronic repairs... it's gotten Cliche around here, if a Mercedes or BMW or VW comes in with electronics issues and/or battery drains... does it have a sunroof?! OH well, they keep us in business!!! Keep up the good work and the most entertaining and informative videos!

I know it's fun to trash talk some auto manufacturers but they all have their various boneheaded engineering gaffs. The problem is that solutions that look good on paper sometimes fail the "real world extended time period" test and some of those issues are practically impossible to see coming. The real test of an auto maker is how efficiently they respond to those design failures.

I assume that the new FOB has to be removed from it's package and a tab on the battery (put there so it doesn't run down the battery while it's sitting on the shelf waiting to be sold) has to be removed from the battery so that battery makes contact. The FOB surely needs power to transmit to the receiver to be programmed. And, of course the water leak problem also needs to be solved or the truck will come back with the same issue in a few months.

I'm a strong believer in coating printed circuit boards with a conformal coating. Conformal coatings protect PCBs from moisture. In the case of that PCB, it looks like the traces were eaten away. While it's sometimes possible to repair, you need to know what the traces were, to begin with. I design PCBs as a hobby, and any PCBs I have that might be exposed to moisture I coat with conformal. Conformal doesn't add much to the cost, but it should be a requirement for PCBs installed in cars. I noticed the PCBs in my 2013 Tesla Model S are protected with conformal.

I had the same issue with my 2005. Bought a replacement (Amazon) LED style 3BL and the seal wasn't working right and to my liking. Even an Autozone replacement seal wasn't thick enough for my taste. Silicone RVT blue...blue so we know it's good...and a bead around the metal on the cab, allowed it to firm up good, popped the light in, BOOM...no more leaks. Those seals on hot dark colors like dark gray and black get pretty warm I guess and the silicone RVT can handle pretty high temps so 4 years later and still no leaks. The FOBs I bought from Amazon, along with the program control was easy to set up since it didn't require special programming. $150 total fix with parts and doing it myself. Those 3rd brake lights, and even the little antennas on the cab like the XM and OnStar seals will leak after a few years. Had my headliner redone and found both of those leaking, as well. You have to have the headliner out to get those antennas out. More silicone RVT blue and no more leaks so far. As in anything you cut a hole in a roof of the seals on those things ALWAY eventually leak. And most people don't even know it until they see water pouring out on the floor or dripping on their heads...lol. But, they can be an expensive repair. Headliner redone..$350. Water running down the pilars into other stuff really will get you if they get into the big money stuff. Glad you knew about this issue, Ray. It'll happen to everyone eventually whether you have a sunroof or not. Take care.

Great call. Most new vehicles let you program new a fob by sequencing info buttons or ignition activation sequences. Although I don't know if having a new module would affect that procedure. Used this method for a F-250 and a Pathfinder, but my Ram did have to have it done with a program after I put in an after market AutoStart that used the original fobs. That may have been what the fourth wire was used for also, a fob with AutoStart feature. Love the vids, always learning something.

After watching the first few minutes I can tell you that all those problems are caused by the BODY MODULE.... Exact same problem in my 2006 Hummer H3. First GM replacement body module only partially worked, so sent back and waitid for another one. Both modules were sold as new; but if they were new, why did I have to send the original unit that was in the car back to them? I think all you can get are remanufactured ones these days. The third one was the charm, it fixed all the problems I had, but created some new ones I did not have before. It turned out that the module was never updated before it was sent out. (why would a brand new one need to be updated?) After the software update everything worked fine again...
