The ONLY reason the NHL would expand playoffs is so the owners could make more money. As for competitive balance if over half the teams in your league are making the playoffs its hard to take them seriously. I would think the majority of people agree with that. Even at 16 this season there is probably going to be two teams at the bottom of the East who dont belong.

There is absolutely no reason to expand the playoffs. The only changes that the league needs to make is to go back to what they were once doing well. Go back to 3-2-1, and the 1-8 conference playoff seeding.

The Colorado Avalanche LOVE the 2013 Draft. Currently have 5 players on the roster (MacKinnon, Drouin, Nichushkin, Lehkonen, Wood) and have had 6 other players from that draft play games for them (Zadorov, Burakovsky, Compher, Andrighetto, Ryan Graves, Kyle Burroughs). Only Mack was drafted by them.

Buffalo last made the playoffs when Atlanta had a team. Buffalo won't make the playoffs again until Atlanta has a team. Bring the NHL back here to Atlanta, and the pieces all finally fall into place for the Sabres.

Disagree on the expanded playoffs. The nba play in is one of the dumbest things ever. 2/3 of the league make the playoffs in the NBA. Teams like 10 games below 500 are gunna make it. Hell no

Even if you don't think a play-on is merited in hockey, you can argue it was absolutely necessary in the NBA. There was usually a dispartiy where you had teams perennially tank just in the hope of getting higher draft picks instead of actually competing. The play-in has made for a much more active trade deadline where a lot of teams are actually buyers and you have two races; to finish top six and to finish in the play-in.

The only reason the owners might want an expanded playoffs is because more games is more revenue for them. As a fan I could care less about more non-competitive teams making the playoffs, I'd rather more good matchups than more bad matchups.

1974 Islanders got Bryan Trottier, Clark Gillies, Stefan Persson & Dave Langevin. Two Hall of Famers, two key defensemen, all 4 time cup winners with the Islanders dynasty. Langevin originally went to Edmonton in the WHA for a couple of years and was reclaimed by the Islanders in the merger arrangement, which made Dave Lewis available for the Butch Goring trade. So you can say that draft produced 5 players, or 1/4 of the Islanders dynasty roster.

Was against the MLB expanded playoffs (to five and then six) and was against the NBA play-in. However, now that both have happened, what you see is more interest in the game by more fanbases longer and later in the season. The trade deadline because more exciting as more teams look to add that piece to get it and also the biggest stars (like Crosby and Ovechkin) are (like LeBron and Steph) guarenteed to get in thus increasing overall interest. It discourages tanking as more teams try to compete for that final spot or spots (as well as a race to get the bye(s)/home court/field/ice advantage). Having the teams play an additional round is not like baseball where not playing can actually hurt you. The ideal solution would be to play a twice a week (one mid-week and one weekend game per team) schedule and get to 64 games so that the regular season matchups (like in soccer) hold more meaning (in that case you could even cut dwon the number of playoff teams to just the division winners) but barring that expanding the playoffs is the way to go.

The story isn't necessarily about Montreal, nor Edmonton. Its about a start-up franchise out of Colorado, and not really a start-up franchise, as the players moved from Kansas City to Colorado. Ramage draft (who was traded to St Louis for 2 first round picks - John Maclean and Rocky Trotier's first round picks, but that was after they traded 3 first round picks (June of 81,82 pick traded in July 1981, 1983 pick traded Oct/Nov of 1981). Its interesting that Elliott mentioned Detroit's selection of draft players, considering that trade of the '83 first round pick by Colorado to New York may have affected whether Lafontaine was selected by Islanders, and Yzerman was selected by Detroit, it was originally Colorado's pick, 3rd overall, Kluzak the year before, and Carpenter, etc (in reverse order). Does Muller even play for New Jersey?

As a hockey fan growing up in NYC at the time I can confirm that Rangers playoff beard story. It was something they came out with before the playoffs started, it was in the newspapers, everybody following hockey in NYC heard about it at the time. It was on John Sterling's radio show, etc. Unfortunately the Rangers playoffs ended in 3 games, being eliminated by the Islanders, so the beards didn't have much chance to grow. The Islanders might have picked it up from the Rangers to goof on them, because over the next couple of years, even before they won, you'd see players like Gillies, Jude Drouin and the Potvin brothers with playoff beards.

Each division top 3 make it. Each division has 2 WC spots. At the end of the regular season each division has a WC vs WC one game win and you're in game to determine 4th. Round 1 of playoffs is 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3. Round 2 is division championships where winners are awarded with one of 4 new division championship trophies. Eliminate east vs west and reseed round 3 into a Final 4. (1) division champion vs (4) division champion, (2) division champion vs (3) division champion. This way any 2 division champions could end up playing for the Stanley Cup. Round 4 Stanley Cup Final. Also you could tie it into the all star game format.

Exactly. You take the entire grueling schedule and finish first and then all of a sudden the shittiest teams get a chance to gain some momentum and take out the first seed first round. 3:51 re: "competitive reasons," you have to remember that there is no perfect playoff. It's about balancing the need to make the sport as entertaining & high stakes as possible with the need to feel like the champion is in fact a worthy one. That said, I wish the NFL had stuck with their 12/32 format. That to me was the best playoff format in major league sports.

The Leafs won their last Cup on May 2,1967,also the last game played in the old ''original six(actually inaccurate)'' league. Expanded playoffs? Pure greed. Ken Dryden rightfully,I think, believed that hockey meant more to Canadians than baseball meant to Americans. Not many fans will stay away even if the Cup is eventually awarded in August.

It's a great idea. It makes the regular season MORE IMPORTANT because if you don't get a top 7 spot, then you play an EXTRA ROUND in the most brutal playoff in professional sports. Also, top teams get MORE REST. Of you could have top three teams in each division skipping first round. Three game series. 3v3 OT until there is a goal.

Okay, maybe if you get rid of the Wildcards, and so the top 3 from each division then the next 4 teams have a best of 3 tournament (not 3 on 3, I was so f'ing bored with the All-Star Game, longer than 5 minutes, NOPE), I could get behind that, they play for last two playoff spots, fine.

I would rather them focus on changing the rules around altering teams in divisions. Like moving teams out of divisions every 5 years or so. Its very boring and a bad look when certain teams always play eachother and one team always wins. Public perception is not good people will start to think its a rigged league. I think the main focus and selling point is would this effect the game negaitively at the expense of abit more revenue? Would this make the fans happy? or just acouple of teams?

It's pointless to ruin your playoffs and make them not-see watching. The extra best of three , best of five playoff rounds the NHL held back in the 70's 80's resulted in a lot of sub optimal results and series . The same way the rigid divisional playoff structure that the NHL had already tried and failed with back in the day hasn't worked that well when they returned to it. I would go with a one versus sixteen format and not be penny wise on the fuel costs. At the very least go back to one versus eight and don't triplicate this mistake ever again. I wouldn't add undeserving team's to play some horrible first round that helps invalidate your regular season because some crappy team sneaks through for a round or two. The beauty is the NHL has tried these playoff formats and they have failed. So the experience is there. Learn from it. Back in 1975 the Islanders, The Penguins, Blackhawks and Maple Leafs all won those first idiotic best of three series. They all lost in the next round except for the Islanders who beat Pittsburgh. Then they lost. The Islanders in 1980 won a cup after winning a preliminary best of five round. They however had finished second in their division. They had 91 points they were the fifth best regular season team in the league. The 79 Rangers made it to the final and they were a real playoff team. They were also fifth in the league. There is no one winning these idiot preliminary round series that wasn't a real playoff team or making it to the final. In 1979 you had 17 NHL teams and there were 12 playoff teams. Try not to go back to that insanity. Learn the lessons you have already learned. Buffalo could have solved their problem any time in the last three years by settling on a useful veteran goalie that wasn't Eric Comrie. Their defense is coming around. Oh my goodness get a vet to go with them. Get a vet. Lukkonnen can be the starter with a veteran. Levi can win the job if he is able. Get a veteran. Spend a little money on a starter.
